balance between dignity and desire.

भ्रान्तं देशमनेकदुर्ग्गविषमं प्राप्तं न किञ्चित् फलं।
त्यक्त्वा जातिकुलाभिमानमुचितं सेवा कृता निष्फला।
भुक्तम् मानविवर्ज्जितं परगृहेष्वाशङ्कया काकवत्
तृष्णे जृंभसि पापकर्मपिशुने नाद्यापि सन्तुष्यसि॥२॥
भर्त्तृहरेः  वैराग्यशतकात्
bhrāntaṁ deśamanekadurggaviṣamaṁ prāptaṁ na kiñcit phalaṁ|
tyaktvā jātikulābhimānamucitaṁ sevā kṛtā niṣphalā|
bhuktam mānavivarjjitaṁ paragṛheṣvāśaṅkayā kākavat
tṛṣṇe jṛṁbhasi pāpakarmapiśune nādyāpi santuṣyasi||2||
bharttṛhareḥ  vairāgyaśatakāt

"I have wandered through various countries and terrains with great difficulty to amass wealth but to no avail. I have unabashedly given up the pride of place of  birth and clan while performing labour unbecoming of me, again without much result but in search of wealth. Like a stray crow, always afraid of being driven away without mercy,  I have waited upon the houses of others for food.  My avarice, you always push me ahead shamelessly, but don't  you ever get satisfied?"

If one has reasonable control over his wants and ambitions,  he can live peacefully.  He can eke out a livelihood in his own place engaging himself in some decent work.  He need not wander around like a crow for its food.  But situations in life are different.  We are likely to go to any extent to enrich ourselves.

This comes from a philosopher king who has seen all the ups and downs of life.  
However, the decry of  avarice should not be taken as contempt for a wholesome life.  One has to strike a healthy balance between dignity and desire.  Not that everyone should stick to enforced poverty and renunciation and lose all motivation in life.
