a shining life

अष्टौ गुणाः दीपयन्ति प्रज्ञा च कौल्यं च दमः श्रुतं च।

śrī mahābhārate udyogaparvaṇi prajāgaraṇaparvaṇi viduranītivakye  adhyāyaḥ35

In his learned expostulation of the duties and  qualities of a king and also a noble person, as recorded in the Viduaneethi in Udyogaparvan of
shree Mahabharatam, where Vidrua is in conversation with His king and brother Dhritarashtra, the eight virtues of a man which make him shine forth  in life are described. They are (1) wisdom (2) noble birth (3) self-control (4) knowledge of scriptures (5) prowess (6) control of the tongue (7) willingness to help others with gifts according to one's own capacity and (8) gratitude.
One could see that most of the qualities are related to one another.

Wisdom is the capacity to process the external data and stimuli reaching the mind in the most effective way and to come to the right conclusion. It also means capacity to respond with exactitude to the inputs.  Of course if this processing unit is out of order nothing can be done.  The individual is lost for ever.

In the social setup of the period of Mahabharatam, birth in a noble family had its own advantages.  But this may not be very significant in a society which is egalitarian as ours. Still one has to accept that the status of the parent  or near relatives play a crucial role in the progress of  a man socially.

Self control is the most important quality one should have to exist with sanity under  any circumstances.  And this is one quality over which the individual can  have absolute mastery.  One does not require the help of others to control himself.

Wide reading and observaton and application of mind are the essential tools for acquiring knowledge.  Ultimately, every situation in life can be faced only with application of this faculty.. An ignorant person may be in bliss when the environs are static but knowledge is the best tool in adversity...it can save the situation for the individual as well as for others around him.

One's physical strength and efficiency impress all around him and these qualities play  a significant role when one climbs up the social ladder and remains at the top.

To have control over one's own words is a very difficult quality to achieve.  There are people who are really great in all respects who land themselves in trouble by uttering an inappropriate word before their bosses, peers, friends and others.  We see such things happen daily when politicians and bureaucrats give open statements and then have to issue lengthy rejoinders in the process of eating their own words.

Some people hold on to their money like the Scrooge unwilling to help others.  There are others who simply spend off all they possess and even incur liabilities to show off their eagerness in giving gifts, in a bid to show one-up-man-ship.  Both attitudes can do harm alone.  One should help others according to his own capacity.

And finally gratitude.  Perhaps this is the quality we lack the most.  This quality should come naturally.. No one can train a person on this.
