नैवाकृतिः फलति नैव कुलं न शीलं

विद्यापि नैव न च यत्नकृतानि सेवा।

भाग्यानि पूर्वतपसा खलु सञ्चितानि

काले फलन्ति पुरुषस्य यथैव वृक्षाः॥

भर्तृहरेः नीतिशतकात्॥ ९७॥

naivākṛtiḥ phalati naiva kulaṁ na śīlaṁ

vidyāpi naiva na ca yatnakṛtāni sevāa|

bhāgyāni pūrvatapasā khalu sañcitāni

kāle phalanti puruṣasya yathaiva vṛkṣāḥ||

bhartṛhareḥ nītiśatakāt|| 97||

A valued gem from Bharthruhari.. the great thinker and poet 

If one thinks realistically , he can find that only the good deeds performed  and virtue or punyams gained  by a person through good luck and incessant penance transform themselves into  worthy results
 The process is just like delicious fruits blessing an age-old tree. 

 One's good looks maintained through lots of medication and make-up vanish..

The claim of belonging to a reputed family, in the end, will not matter much.  

Even the eagerly cultivated and rehearsed manners or the vast education do not give one sufficient power in the end. 

 And even the goodwill amassed though  long years of faithful and well-documented  services cannot be the final word  in determining the ultimate peak in  one's career or life.

The philosopher king Bharthruhari  is not decrying the various traits that a person should develop and nurture throughout his life. 

 But these,if you borrow from cricket jargon , can be equated to the copy book style of batting.   More craft that runs
Ultimately the good deeds and the luck bestowed upon us by God as a result will make the day for us.
