had I not jumped out in time..

A story from panchatantram..

There was a donkey living under the tutelage of an old washer-man, the master and the beast both always hungry and miserable. Once in desperation for food the donkey ran to the outskirts of the village he was sharing with his master, and there he found a fox standing on the border adjoining the jungle. The fox was pondering seriously of entering the hamlet because lack of food was an equally acute issue in the jungle.

The two partners in woe stuck a friendship and on that day, while the donkey was toiling for his master, the fox wandered around and discovered a field full of ripe watermelons. Though the area was fenced well, there was a breach and the cunning fox did not fail to divine it..

In the evening, the fox invited the donkey to share their dinner in the melon fields and both visited the field of operation late in night and had their bellies overfull with watermelons..

When hunger was no more an issue, the donkey could not control his itch for producing music with his attractive vocal chords ( though humans and others call it braying)..

So he told his friend the fox, “mon ami, I cannot help singing a melodious song now”.

The fox tried to reason with the donkey but when it was sure that the divine music will erupt at any moment, the fox jumped out of the field and ran to safety.

The donkey started his Raga Vistaaram and the owner of the field was supposed to came in to watch and enjoy the concert.. But the results were not entirely to the liking of either the farmer or the donkey..

The donkey was beaten out of his shape..

The fox, watching from a distance was thinking...

" had I not jumped out at the right moment....”

the robbing eyes

The supreme Lord that  you are Krishna, you created the whole universe of sand, sea and sky

and then you came as an urchin and grew up among the innocent cowherds who did not know how to read or write,
but they knew how to love you…
And wandering as a black naughty lad,
you played sweet music with your flute,
which filled brindaban and your friends with supreme ecstasy, made the waves of Yamuna to dance to your sweet melody
and fills my life a motive to live…

That look of a thief, you Krishna, threw at the gopi ,
you standing behind your mother Yasodha,

pleading with those beautiful naughty eyes more eloquently than in words not to report to your mother the story that you had stolen butter,
lent meaning to the life not only of that gopi,
but when I try to visualize that in my heart, it gives meaning to my life too

..
Apart from this what do I want, Krishna,
the wealth of this world,

 power and pelf..

No Krishna, definitely not..

if that stealthy eyes of yours are pleased to stay for a split second on this poor servant of yours,

what is  left in this world to look for?

Those dark eyes half open and half closed,
those dark eyes resembling the black clouds,

the autumn full moon and its rays showering eternal love on me…

if this wretched body of mine ever comes under that shower even for just once, have I any use for heaven and release from this world.?

You bind me to this earth for ever Krishna,

as your lore can be  sung with total love only here on this green earth..

I love you Krishna

He has left me at the summit

He has left me at the summit

The journey was easy at first  I walked along.
However as days wore on, the path became rougher, and my legs ached.
I called Krishna, "I cannot walk any more. I am ending this journey".

Krishna replied, "Do not stop in the middle.  I will keep you company. Walk along"

He sang and danced to encourage me.
So I walked on.
Still I was too tired and numb at feet.

Then He said, " I will hold your hands and you just walk ahead"
I trudged on reluctantly because He was holding my hands.

I do not know when, but I was too tired and swooned.

When I woke up I was standing alone.

But I was standing  at the Summit.

The mission accomplished.

I looked back to see the footprints behind me.

There was only one pair of them.

I felt angry and shouted at Krishna
"You abandoned me when I swooned. And I had to go it all alone. Why did you leave me and run away, Krishna you cheat?"

Then I watched the footprints once again.

They were strong, beautiful and deep.

They were unlike my gnarled shapeless feet.

 Then I saw it.
The footprints belonged to Krishna.

The prints were so deep because he carried a heavy burden.

He had trudged the thorny path carrying me on His shoulders.

He has left me at the summit, and done the vanishing trick.
Not keen to share any glory!

I love you Krishna.

in silence we speak the most eloquent words

சும்மா இருசொல் லறவென் றலுமே
அம்மா பொரு ளொன்று மறிந்திலனே.
This is what the seer poet of Tamil, the ardent devotee of Murugan tells in Kandaranubhoothi.. He, in fact, recalled what his lord and Master Muruga instructed him.." keep quiet, forget words, thus He said, but I did not know the meaning of that at that moment"
Before becoming saint under the Divine influence of the God of Tamil Language Muruga, Arunagirinathar was leading a loose life, and a sudden shocking conversation with his sister made him realize the sins he was committing all the time, and he decided to put an end to his life by jumping from the tall tower of the Lord's Shrine in Tiruvannamalai.. But the Lord had other designs for him. The kind Lord caught the man jumping down with his outstretched hands and the transform
ed man the saint-poet Arungairinathar was born. But the mortal body was still living and the vasanaas would not leave him so easily.. For this the Lord advised hime to keep quite as quoted above. The poet transformed himself in silence to reach immortality through his vivid songs on Muruga,, and he is a legend in Tamilnadu and India.. All great things are born in Silence.
A prayer to Guru Dakshinamoorthy Shiva..
चित्रं वट तरोर्मूले वृद्धशिष्याः गुरुर्युवा गुरोस्तु मौनं व्याख्यानं शिष्यास्तु छिन्नसंशयाः
 tells everything..
the Lord is sitting underneath the Vatavriksha, in all His pristine youth and the disciples, who are all wizened old sages, sit around Him. The guru communicates to the disciples in silence through chimudra and the doubts of the disciples vanish..
Yes, in silence we speak the most eloquent words..
Whenever and wherever possible we have to know how to withdraw ourselves into complete silence, and in that silence will gain the power to look at everything including our own existence in a freshly enlightened manner.. All yogas and meditation techniques are finally meant to train us for this .

Freedom from Helplessness

Freedom from Helplessness
The prognosis is writ large the moment we were given lives as embryos..The finger that runs on the keyboard is 58 years old.. Was this being helpless all these years.. It could have been annihilated every moment right from when it took shape in a female womb. It has been confronted will all dangers for fifty nine years now but it has been provided a reasonably comfortable existence .. By.. call it God, Serendipity, Krishna, Jesus, AllaH,, does a name really matter.. If you would prefer to call it mere chance, that "mere chance" is the God.. This being would have overcome very minor adversities, but how could it have survived without many things which only that "power" provided in its superior wisdom. That power has never made this being to feel helpless at any time.. When that power is there is to help how can this being be helpless.. The moment help from that source stops, this being ceases to exist, to feel anything and then the feeling of helplessness becomes redundant. This is the ultimate truth.. Accept it or not, the truth is not affected.

I offer my pranams to Thulasi who is dear to Vishnu and who will bless us with auspicous bounties. She will grant us emancipation from worldly woes, and she is the source for all our wealth,

Mother Thulasi, may Your Divine Grace be pleased to protect me from all dangers confronting me daily and for long stints.
Your Divine Grace when praised or meditated upon is capable of purifying us the human beings.

I offer obeisance to Thulasi with bowed head. She is of bright stems and sprouts. Seeing Her the worst sinners among men are released for ever from their sins.

The entire universe with all moving and non-moving objects is protected by Mata Thulasi. Once her benevolent eyes fall on the sinners of the world, their sins are reduced to nought forthwith.
My pranams to the Holy mother Thulsi, at whose roots all sources of holy waters resides, at whose stems all Gods reside and at whose leafy tips all the Vedas are present.

The whole world is purified by her and is made the embodiment of Lord Vishnu because of her pure attachment to the lord. and therefore there is no divinity to vie with the Grace of Tulasi in the whole universe.

In Kaliyuga, when a leaf of Tulasi is offered at the head of Vishnu with devotion, the bhakta who had done that service is bestowed with all the wealth and welfare that can be desired in this world.

My pranams to you Mother Thulasi who is the source of all knowledge. You are the consort of Vishnu the best among purushas. May your Divine Grace be pleased to protect me from all sins and to bestow on me all the blessings and material bounties by your sweet will.

Krishna is the doer

GITA Chapter 11

The blessed lord says in gita.." I am the Kaala the destructor of the whole universe when the time arrives. So, in My superior wisdom and will, I have decided that the opponents arrayed against you in war are to be destroyed, nay, they are already destroyed, or they will be destroyed even without your intervention..So Arjuna, you raise up, fight and apparently slay them in war  and gain fame and wealth and rule the kingdom.. but always consider yourself as  a mere instrument in My hands or  as a façade  the real hands which do or undo are Mine. Why are you blinking?  I have already slain Drona, Bheeshma, Jayadhrata, Karna and the myriad of other fighters assembled against you and their death at your hands is only a myth .. Why should you grieve thinking that you are killing them, when I, acting as the Kaalapurusha is performing the act of exterminating them? You are just playing a role of apparently killing those who are all killed by me.. I simply transfer the glory to you. I am beyond glory and curse."

This the the 21st Astapadi in Jayadeva's Gitagovindam,  the romantic fake quarrel between Radha and Krishna coming to an end and Radha is prodded to enter into a beautiful bower in the precincts of the bands of Yamuna.. Her Madhava is waiting for her all lovelorn.

Laughing excitedly in expectation of the consummation  of  your love with HIm, Radhe, you enter the beautiful bower made of wild tendrils and leaves and enjoy the company of Your Mahdhava 1
With your your young breast throbbing under the garland of fresh pearls, Radhe, you enter the beautiful bower adorned with ashoka flowers and enjoy the company of Your Mahdhava 2
With your mind full of erotic thought of His company, Radhe you enter the beautiful bower  where the bramaras (beetles) drunk with the honey of the flowers decorating your rendezvous are flying around in intoxication. and enjoy  the company of Your Mahdhava 3
With your body as beautiful and tender as a bunch of flowers,  Radhe, you enter the beautiful bower whose inside  is built  wit myriad  fragrant flowers and  enjoy  the company of Your Mahdhava 4
With your sweet lips humming melodies of love, Radhe, you enter the beautiful bower which is fragrant and  with the gentle cool breeze of the mount Malaya
and enjoy the company of Your Mahdhava 5
With the lustre of your teeth defeaing the gem Manikyam (white or transparent ruby which shines in light ), Radhe you enter the beautiful bower of soft tendrils, which is reverberating with the song of groups of cuckoo birds, to enjoy  the company of Your Mahdhava 6
With your very heavy hips, you enter the beautiful bower which is shining with freshly grown tendrils and young leaves, to enjoy the company of your Mahdava.7

You Krishna the slayer of the demon Mura, may you pleased to to shower you Grace on all the devotes and singers of this lyric composed by Jayadeva the emporer of poets and dearest husband of  Padmavati.8

The arrangement of words in this lyric.. both a love poem as well as a composition expectantly awaiting the union of Radha and Madhava, which union is the source of the whole universe....  is beautiful beyond description.. The beauty of the verse, sure,  can never be captured in full after translation from Sanskrit to  any other language.

Gaayatree Homa Vidhi

Gaayatree Homa Vidhi
It is the practice for  Brahmins belonging to all Sakhas to perform Gayatrijapam   on the Krishna Paksha prathama on Sravana month.. We chant 1008 times the Gayatri mantra.

But the original ritual expected of us was offering 1008 palasa samiths dipped in ghee or milk to the agni.

The bramacharis were expected to perform the homa in the agni  generated  for samidhaadhaana and the grihastas are expected to perform the Homa  in Laukika agni.

Actually in the dharmastraas  there was an exception clause Japet vaa.. (in the alternate),  meaning if we are not  able to do Homam, we can chant gayatri 1008 times.and now the exception has become rule.

Only the brahmachari performing the gayatri japam after upakarmam for the first time is now doing the Homam..

The various rituals are discussed below In brief.

We have to perform  Vigneswara puja.. in Haridra Bimbam..

The brahmachari performing the Homam for the first time should perform anujna..
For this some vaidikaas are to be present..

the inner meaning of vyaahritis.

Now let us ponder over the meanings behind the vyahritis.

The pranavam, which precedes every vyahriti  is the combination of  akaara  ukaara and makaara and in this combination it represents the triumvirate  Brahma  Vishnu and Maheswara who are the manifestation of the supreme brahmam.

The seven vyahritis can be defined only in conjunction with the Pranavam and  it has to be considered that pranavam is the integral part of each vyaahriti.
If we consider each vyahriti  along with the pranavam.

Om bhuuH.. bhuu is the embodiment of Satta or the essence of existence and it is one with brahmam in combination with pranava.

Om BhuvaH… bhuvaH represents the stithi or the present existence of all things and it is one with brahmam in combnation with pranava.

Om SuvaH.. this is invoked by the harbingers of welfare and prosperity like the rishis Sanaka… vring varane(वृङ्ग् वरणे)  representing Va preceded by Su shobane..( सु शोभने) (meaning that it attracts all that is shobanam)  -- and in conjunction with pranavam this vyahriti also represents brahmam.

Om MahaH… this is the vyahriti invoked by the great souls seeking emancipation or moksham form mundance existence (MahaH  poojaayam  महः पूजायाम्)  is also the ultimate brahmam in conjunction with pranava.

Om janaH..  this vyahriti represents the creation of the entire universe (janee praadhurbhaave.. जनी प्रादुर्भावे)  and in conjunction  with pranava, this  also represents brahmam.

Om tapaH.. the energy which is inherent in all beings and present in its manifest form in the effulgent sun and  is setting all beings into action.. is represented by this vyahriti (तपति इति तपः) and in conjunction with pranva this again represents the supreme brahma.

Om Satyam… Satyam is one that is not affected or destroyed by space, time, matter or any other existing stimuls, and one that has no destruction because it was never born but was ever existent (न जायते म्रियते वा कदाचित्  ----गीतायां  it is never born so it has no death.. cf Gita), and it represents the absolute truth and in conjunctin with pranava it again becomes the supreme brahma…

So while contemplating on the seven vyahritis during japa and pranayama we have to be conscious that we are invoking into our own beings the supreme brahma in the shape of pranava, the triumvirate and the seven forms  as discussed above.

gayatri nyasam

After describing the seven vyahritis, the method to pay respects to gayatri is described.  Each paadam of gayatri is divided into two.. total six
