About Yajnopaveetham…

About Yajnopaveetham…

These are some of the essential instructions about Yajnopaveetham.. the holy thread worn by Brahmins.. as could be seen from ancient texts..

vāmahaste vyatīte tu tat tyaktvā dhārayet navam|

If the sacred thread or yajnopaveetam slips from our left arm, then we will have to discard it and wear a new set of thread.

patitaṁ truṭitaṁ vāpi brahmasūtraṁ yadā bhavet|
nūtanaṁ dhārayet vipraḥ snātvā saṅkalpapūrvakam||

If the yajnopaveetam falls out, gets broken, then the brahmin should take bath, perform formal sankalpam and wear new set of thread.

malamūtre tyajet vipro vismṛtyvopavītadhṛk|
upavītaṁ tadutsṛjya dadhyādanyannavaṁ tadā||
ācārendu

If a brahmin passes urine or stools when wearing the yajnopaveetham in the upaveethi or pracheenaveeti or niveeti position.. ( without placing its end around the right year in the niveeti position..) then he should throw away the thread worn by him and wear a new set of threads immediately.

(These instructions are from the text Acharendu)
