अनारम्भो मनुष्याणां प्रथमं बुद्धिलक्षणम्।
आरब्धस्यान्तगमनं द्वितीयं बुद्धिलक्षणम्॥
समयोचितपद्यमालिकायाम्।
anārambho manuṣyāṇāṁ prathamaṁ buddhilakṣaṇam|
ārabdhasyāntagamanaṁ dvitīyaṁ buddhilakṣaṇam||
samayocitapadyamālikāyām|
A very pragmatic and matter of fact subhashitam.
Any project or activity should be taken up only if it viable and if it would be possible to complete it with fair chance of success. If that minimum guarantee is not there, the wise person should not embark on the project at all. However, if he has planned and started, he should ensure that the target set is reached
The meaning of the slokam found in Samayochita padyamalika and many other anthologies is
The first and foremost sign of intelligence and resourcefulness in a man is his tendency not to start any particular project ( without proper evaluation and planning)
The second sign of intelligence and capacity in a man is his unremitting perseverence to ensure that what he has started is pursued to the logical conclusion..
The sloka does not advice that we should run away from any endeavours.. But we should start a project only after studying all its pros and cons and feasibility too..
And once we start on something, it is still more unwise to leave it in the middle.. we should try to see the end of it..

ഒരു പ്രവൃത്തിയോ പദ്ധതിയോ ഏറ്റെടുക്കാന്‍ തുടങ്ങുമ്പോള്‍ അത് പ്രായോഗികമാണോ, ആ പദ്ധതി നിശ്ചയിച്ച പരിപാടിക്രമം അനുസരിച്ച് മുന്നോട്ട് കൊണ്ടുപോകാന്‍ സാധാരണഗതിയില്‍ സാധ്യമാണോ എന്ന് നല്ലവണ്ണം ആലോചിച്ചിട്ടു വേണം അത് തുടങ്ങുവാന്‍.
ഒരു പരിധിവരെയെങ്കിലും വിജയസാധ്യത ഇല്ലാത്ത പദ്ധതികള്‍ ഏറ്റെടുക്കാതിരിക്കുന്നതാണ് ബുദ്ധി.
പക്ഷേ ഒരു പദ്ധതി ഏറ്റെടുത്ത്‌ അതിന്നായി ഇറങ്ങിപ്പുറപ്പെട്ടാല്‍ പിന്നെ അത് എന്ത് വില കൊടുത്തും പൂര്‍ത്തിയാക്കിയേ പറ്റൂ. അതാണ്‌ ശരിയായ ബുദ്ധി
സമയോചിത പദ്യമാലികയിലും പിന്നെ പലേ സമാഹാരങ്ങളിലും കാണുന്ന ഈ ശ്ലോകത്തിന്റെ അര്‍ത്ഥം
ഒരു വ്യക്തിയുടെ ബുദ്ധിശക്തിയുടെ ആദ്യത്തെ ലക്ഷണം കാര്യങ്ങള്‍ (ധൃതിപിടിച്ച് )ചെയ്യാന്‍ പുറപ്പെടാതെ ഇരിക്കുക എന്നതാണ്
പക്ഷെ അയാളുടെ ബുദ്ധിശക്തിയുടെ രണ്ടാമത്തെ ലക്ഷണം തുടങ്ങിയ കാര്യം എന്ത് വന്നാലും മുഴുമിപ്പിക്കുക എന്നതാണ്.
ഒരു കാര്യവും ചെയ്യാതെ മടിപിടിച്ചിരിക്കാനുള്ള ഉപദേശം ഒന്നുമല്ല ഇത്. ഒരു കാര്യം തുടങ്ങുന്നതിനു മുമ്പ് വളരെയേറെ ആലോചിച്ചു പരിപാടി ചിട്ടപ്പെടുത്തിയ ശേഷവും, പിന്നെ ആ പരിപാടി വിജയിക്കുവാന്‍ സാധാരണഗതിയില്‍ നല്ല സാധ്യത ഉണ്ടെങ്കിലും മാത്രം പ്രവര്‍ത്തനം തുടങ്ങുക.
പക്ഷ ഒരു കാര്യം തുടങ്ങിയ ശേഷം പകുതിയില്‍ ഉപേക്ഷിക്കുന്നത് വിവരക്കേടാണ്.
