आदौ कुलं परीक्षेत ततो विद्यां ततो वयः । 

शीलं धनं ततो रूपं देशं पश्चात् विवाहयेत् ॥ 

ādau kulaṃ parīkṣeta tato vidyāṃ tato vayaḥ | 

śīlaṃ dhanaṃ tato rūpaṃ deśaṃ paścāt vivāhayet ||. 

4743 (Maha-subhashita-samgraha) 

आदौ तातो वरं पश्येत् ततो वित्तं ततः कुलम् ।

यदि कश्चिद् वरे दोषः किं धनेन कुलेन किम् ॥

When it comes to selection of a bridegroom for the daughter, 

The first consideration should be the family or clan of the groom 

The next consideration should be education of the prospective groom 

Next, the suitability with referenct to age difference should be considered 

The character and conduct of the suitor should be considered then 

The possessions and wealth of the groom comes as the next qualifying point 

Physical attractiveness comes next 

Finally the nationality or domicility of the groom also should be a matter of consideration..

Further 

The father should basically concentrate on the antecedents of the prospective groom, 

And the affluence, greatness of the family and such things should come next alone

If there is indeed some fundamental defect or flaw in the groom himself, it is futile to think of the family or wealth. 

The preferences except the basic good character of the groom can vary, but every quality is worth serious consideration.

നമ്മുടെ ഭാരതീയ ആചാരക്രമം അനുസരിച്ച് പെണ്മക്കള്‍ക്കു വരനെ തിരഞ്ഞെടുക്കുമ്പോള്‍ പരിഗണിക്കേണ്ട കാര്യങ്ങള്‍ 

ശുക്രനീതിയില്‍ സൂചിപ്പിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്.. മുകളില്‍ ഉദ്ധരിച്ച ആദ്യത്തെ ശ്ലോകം ശുക്രനീതിയിലും അടുത്ത ശ്ലോകം ഒരു സാമ്പ്രദായികമായ പഴഞ്ചൊല്ലിന്‍റെ രൂപത്തിലും കാണുന്നു 

അര്‍ത്ഥം 

കുടുംബത്തില്‍ പിറന്ന പെണ്‍കുട്ടിക്ക് വിവാഹത്തിനായി വരനെ തിരഞ്ഞെടുക്കുമ്പോള്‍ പരിഗണിക്കേണ്ട കാര്യങ്ങള്‍ 

ഒന്നാമതായി കുലവും കടുംബമഹിമ 

പിന്നെ വരന്റെ വിദ്യാഭാസ യോഗ്യത 

പിന്നീട് വയസ്സുകൊണ്ടുള്ള പൊരുത്തം 

വരന്റെ സ്വഭാവവും പെരുമാറ്റവും പരിഗണിക്കേണ്ടതുണ്ട് 

പിന്നെ വരന്റെ സാമ്പത്തിക സ്ഥിതി 

വരന്റെ ജന്മനാട്, രാജ്യം ഇതൊക്കെ നല്ലവണ്ണം പരിഗണിക്കണം 

പക്ഷെ ഒരു കാര്യം 

മകളെ കൊടുക്കുന്ന പിതാവ് 

വരന്‍റെ സ്വഭാവശുദ്ധിയും ഗതകാല ചരിത്രവും ആണ് ആദ്യം മനസ്സില്‍ കരുതേണ്ടത്.

പണവും കുടുംബമഹിമയും എല്ലാം ഇതിനു പിറകെ

മാത്രം. 

വരന് എന്തെങ്കിലും കാര്യമായ കുഴപ്പമോ കോട്ടമോ ഉണ്ടെങ്കില്‍ പിന്നെ കുലം കുടുംബം സ്വത്ത് എന്നിവകൊണ്ട് എന്ത് പ്രയോജനം?

ഏറ്റവും പ്രധാനം വരന്റെ സ്വഭാവമാണ് 

വരന്റെ സ്വഭാവമൊഴിച്ചു മുകളില്‍ പറഞ്ഞ കാര്യങ്ങള്‍ കണക്കാക്കുമ്പോള്‍ പരിഗണനാക്രമം മാറിയാലും കുഴപ്പമില്ല.
