hardly any difference between begging and drinking poison

हालाहलमपि पीतं बहुशो बहुशो भिक्षापि भिक्षिता भवता।

अनयोरवगतरसयोः शङ्कर कियदन्तरं कथय॥

hālāhalamapi pītaṁ bahuśo bahuśo bhikṣāpi bhikṣitā bhavatā|

anayoravagatarasayoḥ śaṅkara kiyadantaraṁ kathaya||

Oh Lord Shankara, you did have the experience of drinking the potent venom Halahala in substantial quantity . You had occasion to wander around begging for food and sustenance too.

My Lord, you have great exposure to both situations. Can you please tell us if there is really any difference between the two situations.

Here the poet Udbata is trying to drive home the point that being forced to beg lands us up in a misery that would easily match to a situation where we are forced to drink poison. During the churning of the Milky oceant, Lord Shiva swallowed the venom Halahala to save the universe. And being afflicted by the evil effects of Brahmahatya Shiva had to wander around with human skull as begging bowl too. So he had exposure to both situations. The poet thinks that Shiva would be the ideal person to compare the misery one would face when exposed to these two situations.

ഭഗവാനെ ശങ്കര, അവിടുന്ന് ഒരിക്കല്‍ കൊടും വിഷമായ ഹാലാഹലം ധാരാളം അകത്താക്കി. നാട് മുഴുവന്‍ നടന്ന് പിച്ച തെണ്ടാനുള്ള അവസരവും അവിടുത്തേയ്ക്ക് ഉണ്ടായി. ഈ രണ്ടു ഗതികെടിനെക്കുറിച്ചും അവിടുത്തേയ്ക്ക് നേരിട്ടുള്ള പരിചയം വേണ്ടതിലേറെ ഉണ്ട്. ഈ രണ്ടു കാര്യങ്ങള്‍ തമ്മില്‍ എന്തെങ്കിലും വ്യത്യാസം ഉണ്ടോ ഇല്ലയോ എന്ന് അവ്ടുന്നു ഒന്ന് പറയാമോ ?

ഇവിടെ കവിയായ ഉദ്ഭടന്‍ അടിവരയിട്ടു പറയാന്‍ ശ്രമിക്കുന്നത് ഇതാണ്. പിച്ച തെണ്ടുന്ന അവസ്ഥയില്‍ നാം എത്തിപ്പെട്ടാല്‍ അത് വിഷം കഴിക്കുന്നതിനേക്കാള്‍ ഒട്ടും ഭേദം അല്ലാത്ത ഒരു സ്ഥിതി തന്നെ ആയിരിക്കും.

പാല്‍ക്കടല്‍ കടയുന്ന അവസരത്തില്‍ ഹാലാഹലവിഷം പൊന്തി വന്നു. ലോകത്തെ രക്ഷിക്കാന്‍ വേണ്ടി ഭഗവാന്‍ ശിവന്‍ ആ വിഷം മുഴുവന്‍ വിഴുങ്ങി തൊണ്ടയില്‍ സൂക്ഷിച്ച കഥ നമുക്കറിയാം. അതുപോലെ ബ്രഹ്മഹത്യാ പാപം ബാധിച്ച് ഭഗവാന്‍ ആ പാപത്തില്‍ നിന്നും മോചനം നേടാനായി കപാലവും ഏന്തി ലോകം മുഴുവന്‍ തെണ്ടി നടന്നു ഭിക്ഷാടനം ചെയ്തു. ഇതും പ്രസിദ്ധമായ കഥയാണ്.

ഭഗവാന് വിഷത്തിന്‍റെ സ്വാദും അറിയാം. പിച്ചയെടുത്ത പരിചയവും ഉണ്ട്. ഈ രണ്ടില്‍ ഏതാണ് കൂടുതല്‍ ഗതികെട്ട കാര്യം എന്ന് പറയാന്‍ കഴിവുള്ള വിഷയ വിദഗ്ധന്‍ ഭഗവാനല്ലാതെ വേറെ ആരാണ് ?
