Meaning
============================
When a person has set out on the part of justice and fairness, even the lesser animals and birds would keep him company and would assist him wholeheartedly.
However, if a person has started his journey in the wrong route.. that is he is set out to flout morality and all decent things, then even his own brother would take leave of him.

We can easily relate to the above idea with the storyline of Ramayanam itself.
Jatayu, a mere eagle offered protection to Sita in the absence of Rama and Laksmana.. The bird even attained martyrdom in the hands of Ravana who was trying to abduct mata Seetha..
This is because Rama, Sita and Lakshmana moved in the path of Dharma.
Take the case of Ravana.. His brother, the righteous Vibheshana, pleaded with Ravana to mend his demonic and immortal ways, but all his entreaties fell on deaf ears.. Finally Vibheeshna had to part company with his elder brother for ever.. And the aid, advice and information provided by Vibheshana played a major role in Rama's victory over Ravana.
Human beings as a class are very optimistic..
In spite of all the troubles and turmoils they encounter, they dream for the piece of bright light at the end of a very dark tunnel..
That hope keeps them afloat.
