grief will unsettle us and may even kill ....

śoko nāśayate dhairyaṁ śoko nāśayate śrutam|
śoko nāśayate sarvaṁ nāsti śokasamo ripuḥ||
vālmīkirāmāyaṇe ayodhyākāṇḍe||62-15

Rama has left for forest to live there for fourteen years. King Dasaratha, though it was he who was responsible for Rama's departure, is overcome by grief, and opens up his heart to queen Kousalya.. Kausalya though a devoted wife, is a mother too, and Rama is her only son and hope.. So she could conceal her distress about the fate of Rama at the hands of Dasaratha and she utters some harsh words.. King Dasaratha, in fact, apologizes to her.

However Kausalya realizes that she should not have behaved that way to her husband.. and leading her husband to a state where he had to apologize was an act which according to her was beyond pardon.. However, Kausalya also realizes that the intense sorrow caused by the departure of Rama had made her forget all propriety in life
The slokam quoted above comes in that context.

Meaning

Intense grief drains a person of all his courage.
Intense grief eclipses all the knowledge and erudition possessed by a person
Intense grief destroys all that is worthy and great
Therefore, there is no enemy in this world who would be as fierce as grief
We tend to forget everything when we are in the grip of intense sorrow
