सत्यमस्तेयमक्रोधः शौचं धीर्धृतिर्दमः



सत्यमस्तेयमक्रोधः शौचं धीर्धृतिर्दमः।
संयतेन्द्रियता विद्या धर्मः सर्व उदाहृदः॥
याज्नवल्क्य्स्मृति ३-४-६६
satyamasteyamakrodhaḥ śaucaṁ dhīrdhṛtirdamaḥ|
saṁyatendriyatā vidyā dharmaḥ sarva udāhṛdaḥ||
yājnavalkysmṛti 3-4-66
The greatest among the lawmakers and jurists of ancient India, Sage Yajnavalkya, gives an inculsive definition for what dharma is
He says in his Yajnavalkyamsriti, which forms a great foundation even for the modern codified Hindu Law.
Meaning

The following qualities are considered as the basis or fundamentals of Dharma
1.Truthfulness (satyam )
2 . Conscious abstainment from stealing (astheyam)
3. Lack of excessing anger or rage (akrodham)
4.. cleanliness (shaucham)
5. intellect (dheeH )
6. Self control (dhriti)
7. Restraint.. ( damaH )
8. control over sense organs (samyatendriyataa )
9. Proper education and knowledge (vidyaa )

Of course the list would looks idealistic or utopian.. But then human development is dependent entirely on aiming at the best and striving for it..

We have to live in hope..
