Anantha incarnated in these forms.. 
Wherever one finds Perumal Narayana in whatever activity, even in His bedroom with Thayaar Lakshmi, Sesha is there.. the confidant and the conscious keeper and servant and the foremost bhaktha of Narayana.. 
What a blessed Soul!
Hinduism survives today because of the Acharyals like Shankara, Ramanuja, Madhva in the forefront..

I deal with religion in more than one way.. 
I have read a lot on Hinduism and have lived as a follower of that religion, and would often discuss the rituals and practices of that school..
But that is more dissemination of information..
I am not hawkish or fanatic about performances..
Just I have the belief that whatever is good, nice and beautiful about that religion and its culture can be followed and enjoyed.. especially when it is not working towards the detriment of social balance..


But I do write on religion as an object of intellectual analysis too.. 
There I treat every religion equally, just on the basis of objective evaluation of the pros and cons of following certain tenets, maintaining certain institutions and attitudes and so on..


There I do not remind me or others that I am a follower of Hinduism..


This might look as applying double standards, and doing double talk.. 
But everything is relevant only in its own context.

pooja--what it means to me



The most beautiful slice of time every day in my life is that eighty to ninety minutes in the morning.. serving.the God the way I love.
I am sure that God needs no service from me..and I do not believe He is going to give me any special boons in return. No.

I do not even know whether he accepts my worship..I can never verify.


To collect flowers to be placed at his feet.

To clean the vessels earmarked for his service.
To clean the ground where He is to sit and receive my flowers and praises.
To clean and decorate the little objects in which I believe He presents Himself (I may be right or wrong in that belief.. but that matters a lot to me)
To offer water for His bath.
To offer incense and sandal paste to Him.
To utter many many words in His/Her praise 
To offer some little food for Him/Her..knowing well that I am not good enough to expect that he/she would eat from my hands.
To offer a leaf of Tulasi to krishna.
To offer a leaf of Bilwa to Shankara 
To see Their majestic presence in the light of brightly lit camphor.
To sip.a drop of water that washed their lotus feet.
Yes. I can get all this only if I am living on this earth.
I want nothing from you God except this slice of time where i serve you forgetting myself.

Vedic Prayer and entreaty to God




Vedic Prayer and entreaty to God.. in the bhakthi way are different..
The vedic arrangement of words..and letters are supposed to be according to the patterns of six Vedangas..
like kalpam shiksha niruktham, chandas, vyakarana and also following Jyothisha..
The first five are dependent on exact pronunciation.. intonation and so on..
You must understand that the Vedic belief was that when the rituals according to the prescriptions are performed, the recipient deities that is the deities who receive their due share of offerings from the sacrifice are bound to deliver the goods without fail.


They would deny such delivery when the rituals are incomplete and are not performed correctly in all respects.

The modern day authors and swamis added some sort of exemptions and condonations to the rigours..

The mimamsa schools did not allow such things.. but the bhakthi schools seem to support the existence of some concessions when the intention is good.. 
The modern gurus hold that it is sufficient to have good intentions.. 
Agreed, good intentions are okay when we consider earthly and mundane matters..

But if you ask the modern gurus,as to what is the basis for such concessions, he or they will have no answers.. 
No major concessions or exemption can be found in ritualistic matters.
In brahmin rituals we have to follow the Vedas and Vedangas..

Bhakthi schools or semi secular swamis can give their opinions, but such opinions cannot hold the fort in Vedic and Yajnik matters.
To believe in Vedas or to believe in Swamis is your choice..

But it is unfair to counter the requirements of Vedas with what some persons who are not exactly subscribing to Vedic ways are saying is not fair..

Those who want to follow Vedas can follow Vedas by subscribing to the rules prescribed in Vedas.. 
If they choose they can followed the ways prescribed by modern gurus.. and swamis too..
But the fallacy lies in creating hybrids or mules.. Hybrids will not work well..

The blessedness of happy stay in father in laws house is extolled here

In this world of woes where existence is clueless and difficult, life and stay would be most comfortable if the place happens to the house of the father in law..

We can see that Hara, the Lord Shiva stays in Kailasa which is a part of Himalaya ranges.. and Himalaya is none other that Uma's father.. and Sivas father in law.

Similarly Lord Vishnu also does not lag behind.. He has taken abode floating aloft the Shesha Naga.. on the ocean.. and one should not fail to note the fact that ocean is from where Lakshmi the better half of Vishnu was born.. So Vishnu also endorses the bliss of residing in the house of father in law..

Of course, the parents in law would be very hospitable to the son in law even if he is an idiot.. because they have to ensure peace for their daughter.

It is another thing that prison is often referred to as Mamiyaar Veedu or the mother in laws house..

dignity to be maintained at any cost



वनेऽपि सिंहाः मृगमांसभक्षिणः
बुभुक्षिताः नैव तृणं चरन्ति।
एवं कुलीनाः व्यसनाभिभूताः
न नीचकर्माणि समाचरन्ति॥
vane'pi siṁhāḥ mṛgamāṁsabhakṣiṇaḥ
bubhukṣitāḥ naiva tṛṇaṁ caranti|
evaṁ kulīnāḥ vyasanābhibhūtāḥ
na nīcakarmāṇi samācaranti||


The lion, the king of the forest, always would have for its food the meat of wild animals like deer .. 
In forest, the lion might face difficult situations too. 
And in the forest, more grass is available than meat.
However, the lion, even if in desperate conditions would not take grass for food.

Just like that a thoroughbred person born in a respectable family would never perform lowly deeds just because he is in difficulties or is overcome by sorrow..

A very important advice... 
it would seem very silly or trivial.. 
but something we usually fail to follow..
to our own dismay.

If some material in our possession is either capable of being gifted or of being consumed, it is better not to hoard them.
Eat them, enjoy them or give them voluntarily to others who can use them.

See, the honeybees collect their honey from so many flowers toiling all along, but store the honey without having the mind to taste them.. 
But what happens..?
Someone else just snatch away all the honey along with the honey combs..

I want to see those bright red lips of Madhava , the lips where the brightest smile is sparkling and shining..
I expect to meet that fellow with a body hue of the darkest clouds in the beautiful bowers on the banks of Kalindi.. yes, he must be there..he will be there..
My lovely friend, please bring that dark skinned fellow immediately to this Radha... my mind is burning with the fire of separation from Him.. Bring Him at once, Bring Him at once..

न पश्यति मदोन्मत्तो ह्यर्थी दोषान् न पश्यति॥

A down to earth statement from Chanakya

We tend to overlook defects in things which are close to their hearts..

A person who is blind physically cannot see anything .. that is obvious
A person who is blind with carnal desires, would not see what is proper, and would do anything criminal to fulfill desires
A person who is drunk with arrogance and deceit would fail to see what is really right and proper
And 
A person who is in need of something would fail to see the evil consequences and defect either in manner in which he would achieve or in the object to be achieved..

Of course, the blind man does not see because he is denied the faculty of vision by nature.. We can understand and empathize with him too.

But a person who forgets himself because of carnal desires, because of arrogance and because of excessive cupidity, has to blame himself alone for the consequences..

Analysis
जन्मान्धः one who is blind birth 
न पश्यति does not see च indeed
कामान्धः one who is blind with carnal desires , one who is driven by such desires
अपि न पश्यति एव too, indeed does not see
मदोन्मत्तः One who is inebriated or drunk with arrogance 
न पश्यति does not see
अर्थी one who is eager to acquire something..is in whant of something 
दोषान् defects, evil consequences 
न पश्यति हि does not see at all..


too much of anything is fraught with danger



अति रूपेण वै सीता चाति गर्वेण रावणः
अति दानाद् बलिर्बद्धो ह्यति सर्वत्र वर्जयेत्
चाणक्याद्
ati rūpeṇa vai sītā cāti garveṇa rāvaṇaḥ
ati dānād balirbaddho hyati sarvatra varjayet
cāṇakyād
Sita went into captivity on account of excessive beauty
Ravana perished because of excessive arrogance
Mahabali paid the price of losing everything simply because he was too generous,
Therefore the wise people should avoid doing anything in excess
So says Chanakya....

If Sita were not as beautiful as she was, Ravana would not have abducted her..

Ravana was a great scholar who is famed to be an erudite exponent of Samavedam, and who is a great poet and singer,.
He is a great Devotee of Lord Shiva.. and is placed as second only to Bana in the list of the closest aides of the Lord.. 
The protocol is Baana, Ravana, Chandesha, Nandi and Bringiridee.. and so on
But He was arrogant, and always thought He is the best, and He landed Himself in many difficult situations ..First with Lord Shiva Himself when he tried to lift Kailash mountain.. and scrapted out of danger .Then he tried to fight with Bali, the monkey and was tied to the cradle of a child of Bali.. and only with great difficulty he could get release from the captivity of the monkey chieftain.
And finally, He encroached upon the honour of Rama by abducting Mother Sita, and for this he paid the price with his own life along with all his kith and kin.. 
Arrogance did the damage.

Mahabali, though an Asura, was great in all respects.. He was the darling of all his subjects.. The Devas were jealous of Him but could never breach his suzerainty because he was so noble and was so just and blemishless in his dealings.. The only soft spot in him was perhaps his preparedness to be generous to a fault.. So the Devas cheated him by sending Vamana, Vishnu incarnate as a child to the place where Bali was doing a Yajna..The child was offered whatever he desired.. And the clevr boy said he wanted only a piece of land that could be covered by the area of three steps with his tiny feet.. 
The preceptor of Bali, Shukracharya, could sense the risk.. He knew that Lord Vishnu had been sent to ensure that Mahabali was divested of all that he had.. So Sukra tried his best to prevent the gift.. But Mahabali could not even think of denying such an insignificant gift..
The gift was confirmed.. and when it came to measuring of the three feet of land, the tiny Vamana metamorphosed Himself to the imposing, huge form Thrivikrama, and the whole universe and netherworlds were just sufficient to be measured by two of his feet.. Mahabali had not place in his possession to offer as the land to be measured by the third step.. So Trivikrama had to place the third step on the head of Mahabali, implying that he had lost everything he had.. 
So misplaced or excessive generosity finished off mahabali..

Lessons of life are there for all to read and understand.. and follow too..

भकार: कुम्भकर्णेस्ति
भकारोस्ति विभीषणे /
तस्मात् राक्षसराजोयम्
राभणो न तु रावण: //


bhakaaraH kumbhakarne asti 
Bhakaarosti vibheeshane 
tasmaat raakshasa rajo ayam
Raabhano na tu RavanaH..


there is Bha kaara in kumbhakarna
there is Bha Kaara in Vibheeshana 
therefore this king of Rakshasaas , who is the brother of the above two should be Raabhana and not Ravana..


That is the meaning of the above slokam..


However it should be notetd that it is only a sloka used by scholars just for fun.. in the genre of chaatusloka in Sanskrit.. 


It is just a joke.. 
Quoting it as if it were gospel truth or authority is concentrated ignorance...
Ignorance of trends in Sanskrit literature


There is a story too attached to this sloka connecting it with Kalidasa.
There was a very haughty but knowledgible princes in Ujjain.. and for marriage she imposed the condition that her suitor should defeat her in literary debate.. Many scholars tried and were defeated and insulted too. So they hatched a plan to wreak vengeance on her..


They found a confounded idiot of a cowherd in a nearby village. The fellow was given a wash, fine dresses and taken to the palace for the debate.. 
When he entered the palace, he saw the princes seated in a big hall which was decorated with pictures from Ramayanam..
He saw an imposing picture of Ravana with his ten heads and exclaimed.."Abbabbada abbada Raabhanaa.."


The princess ridiculted the cowherd saying that he did not know even to rightly identify and spell the name of Ravana..


But then those who accompanied the idiot argued that the correct etymology demanded that Ravana should be called Rabana.. 
After all there were three brothers, two younger brothers called Kumbhakarna and Vibheeshana and the elder was therefore wrongly called Ravana..
Since the younger brother both had " bha" as the second letter in their names, the elder also should have the exact pattern in his name and so the cowherd had called this Rabhana correctly..


The princess was speechless and she was deemed as defeated in the debate, and had to marry the idiot..


It is another story that, being prodded by the princes the cowherd worshipped Goddess Kali, and by Her sweet grace became the greatest poet of all ages in any languagae KALIDASA 


That story and slokam are nice.. but it is silly to claim that the name of the erstwhile king of Lanka was Rabhana for that reason..

The enmity should be with people who are strong..
When a stone is ground on another stone, sparks would emerge..
But when the stone is pressed on a heap of sand, nothing worthwhile can happen..

For every Rama, there should be a Ravana..

യഥാര്‍ത്ഥത്തില്‍  ശക്തിയുള്ളവന്‍  അതുപോലെ ശക്തിയുള്ളവനോടു മാത്രമേ തന്റെ ഊക്കു പ്രകടിപ്പിക്കുകയുള്ളൂ

കരുത്ത് കാണിക്കുന്നതിലും ഒരു അന്തസ്സ് വേണം..

Another great thought from old.. worth remembering

People with some virtues and qualities which are generally accepted usually meet with difficulties.. 
However people who are not having any such qualities are free and happy.. 
The parrots, who can sing and talk and look beautiful are kept in captivity, but the crows just move around happily without any hassles.

Yes, it is a dilemma indeed
If a person is worth something, his actions would be criticized, evaluated.
If he is of no particular distinction, no one would think of him.

Yes, eventless lives can go on for ever
But worthy lives will faces praises, criticism, encouragement and pulling down too...

To live in darkness for ever or to live in limelight even for a short while is mostly our choice..

कं न स्पृशन्ति पुरुषं व्यसनानि काले
को वा निरन्तरसुखी य इहास्ति लोके।
दुःखं सुखं च परिणामवशादुपैति
नक्षत्रचक्रमिव खे परिवर्तमानम्॥

duḥkhaṁ sukhaṁ ca pariṇāmavaśādupaiti

Mahasubhashita Sangraha is a monumental collection of Sanskrit Subhashitas.. compiled by Dr Ludwik Sternbach a Polish Scholar.. who was the Secretary General of international Studies in Sanskrit when he passed away in 1981, leaving the entire community of Sankrit lovers stunned.

He did extensive studies in the field of Subhashita literature, and culled out great nuggets found in hundreds of literary creations in Sankrit spread over twenty decades or more, and also brought to limelight the various compilations of Sanskrit Subhashitams that appeared at various junctures in the history of Sanskrit literature..


The great sloka quoted above underlines the unsure nature of human life, and the happenings in life.. 

Life is just a cycle of episodes of happiness and comfort interspersed with times of sorrow and tribulations.. Usually neither of the two conditions would persist for ever..But every human being wants to be comfortable.. that is a very tall order.. and as stiff demand to God.

Which man can remain untouched and unaffected by sorrows at some stage or other in his life?
Which man can remain in permanent and uniterrupted comfort in this world?
The episodes or bouts of happiness and comfort as well as sorrows and tribulations visit a man perhaps in repeating cycles just like the changing positions of stars in the sky happening with passage of time.

The uncertainties and vagaries that affect the fortunes of individuals and of groups and societies and states just continue to pose their challenges.. 
No one, however efficient and farsighted he is, woulf br able to say for sure what shape things would in the long run.. 
We just manage our affairs hoping the the basic structure of tranquility would remain in place but tolerable ups and downs..
But if an abysmal turnaround occurs, we can only watch helplessly. Our fortunes are so brittle..

in this work, very valuable sayings,in Sanskrit, very often quoted, but conveying contradicting viewpoints,
Such slokas are arranged almost in sets

i give below one such set..
Enough food for thought,,,
enough to confuse us as to which idea is the right one..

In fact, though contradictory, both ideas seem to hold fort in their own contexts..

सुखार्थिनः कुतो विद्या कुतो विद्यार्थिनः सुखम्।
सुखार्थी चेत्त्यजेत् विद्यां विद्यार्थी चेत् त्यजेत् सुखम्॥
sukhārthinaḥ kuto vidyā kuto vidyārthinaḥ sukham|
sukhārthī cettyajet vidyāṁ vidyārthī cet tyajet sukham||

Meaning---

If one is hankering after comforts and comforts alone, he will not be able to attain much knowledge.. And for one who is always in pursuit of knowledge, physical or material comforts would be distant dreams..
If one is eager to have comforts alone, he may abandon the learning process altogether and if learning is his priority , he must forget the material comforts..

बुभुक्षितैर्व्याकरणं न भुज्यते पिपासितः काव्यरसो न पीयते।
न छन्दसा केनचिदुद्धृतं कुलं हिरण्यमेवार्ज्जय निष्फलाः गुणाः॥
bubhukṣitairvyākaraṇaṁ na bhujyate pipāsitaḥ kāvyaraso na pīyate|
na chandasā kenaciduddhṛtaṁ kulaṁ hiraṇyamevārjjaya niṣphalāḥ guṇāḥ||

A person ( however learned he may be) cannot survive by eating grammar when he is hungry.. He cannot drink the metaphoric nectar of poesy and poetic sweeness when he is thirsty ( he would have to drink water or some other potable fluid alone ) . The clan of no Sholar has been uplifted to comfort through just reciting poetry in nice metres.. Therefore, earn Gold.. Learnedness and the virtues arising from them are of little utility when it comes to real needs.. so just earn gold, and earn gold alone..

What a funny set of contradictory ideas.!

The first is terse, factual and moralistic too
The second is just crassly materialistic.

The highbrows and showmen would praise the first as ideal, and would condemn the second in public..
But then their natural instinct would be to seek comforts rather than to sit tight, burn the midnight oil, and study.. ( Why study, you can cut and paste). And they will be amassing money in secret while waxing eloquent about morals..

And the dreamy, silly, moralists ? Do they really matter anyway?

The practical choice appears to be a sort of golden mean between the two extreme ideas..

Meaning 

Bad things, when they pass through the mouth of good people become good. that is, when good even when they talk of bad things would find something good to say about them..

Virtues and great things when they pass through the mouth of evil minded people becom bad , that is when bad people speak about good things, they give out very bad remarks and find defects which are not there..

This is a common phenomenon.. no one need be surprised about it..

The big black rainy cloud is formed by drinking alkaline, non potable water on the surface of the earth , but these clouds in their turn shower sweet water for all on the earth to drink to their hearts content..

However, a poisonous snake thrives by drinking sweet milk, but by nature the snake spews out only dealy venom..

Nasadiya Sukta - Creation Hymn

This hymn is from [R.V.10.129]. I have drawn heavily on the translation by Ralph T.H. Griffith for this article.
It is a "cosmology" hymn, that seeks to explain the origin of creation. Briefly, it describes the chaos that preceded creation, when there was neither death nor immortality. From this chaos, the "One", animated by its own impulse, breathed and came into existence. From the unfathomable depths of water, from the darkness of the cosmic void, emerged this spirit, animated by desire.
It goes on to say how the wise seers are able to perceive the kinship between being and non-being (that are separated merely by a thin line) by searching their heart for wisdom. They see the seminal powers that create the mighty, fertile forces. They see the impulse above the line and strength below.
It ends with a rather startling refrain. "After all, who really knows what happened and who can presume to tell it? What is the origin of creation? For, even the Gods themselves are younger than it. He whether he created it or did not, He who surveys it all from the highest heaven, He knows - or maybe even he does not!"
This end-refrain, where it leaves open the possibility that even the Supreme being may be ignorant of the mystery of creation, makes it rather unique among the creation songs.
नासदासीन् नो सदासीत् तदानीं नासीद् रजो नो व्योमापरो यत्
किमावरीवः कुह कस्य शर्मन्नम्भः किमासीद् गहनं गभीरम्
Then was neither being nor non-being; there was no realm of air nor sky beyond. What covered it, and where? what sheltered it? Was water there, unfathomed depth of water?
न मृत्युरासीदमृतं न तर्हि न रात्र्या अह्न आसीत्प्रकेतः
आनीदवातं स्वधया तदेकं तस्माद्धान्यन् न परः किं चनास
Death was not then, nor was there aught immortal; no sign was there, nor day's and night's divider. That One being, breathless, breathed by its own nature: apart from it there was nothing else.
तम आसीत् तमसा गूळमग्रेऽप्रकेतं सलिलं सर्वमाइदम्
तुच्येनाभ्वपिहितं यदासीत् तपसस्तन्महिनाजायतैकम्
Darkness there was: at first concealed in darkness all was indiscriminate chaos. All that existed then was void and formless: by the great power of warmth was born that unit.
कामस्तदग्रे समवर्तताधि मनसो रेतः प्रथमं यदासीत्
सतो बन्धुमसति निरविन्दन् हृदि प्रतीष्याकवयो मनीषा
Thereafter rose desire in the beginning, desire, the primal seed and germ of spirit. Seers who searched their heart for wisdom discovered the kinship between the being and non-being.
तिरश्चीनो विततो रश्मिरेषामधः स्विदासी दुपरिस्विदासी
रेतोधाआसन् महिमान आसन् स्वधा अवस्तात् प्रयतिः परस्तात्
Transversely was their severing line extended: what was above it then, and what below it? There were seminal begetters, there were mighty forces, free action here and energy up yonder.
को अद्धा वेद क इह प्र वोचत् कुत आजाता कुत इयंविसृष्टिः
अर्वाग् देवा अस्य विसर्जनेनाथा को वेद यतआबभूव
Who knows and who can say, whence it was born and whence came this creation? The Gods are later than this world's creation. Who knows then whence it first came into being?
इयं विसृष्टिर्यत आबभूव यदि वा दधे यदि वा न
यो अस्याध्यक्षः परमे व्योमन् सो अङ्ग वेद यदि वा नवेद
He, the first origin of this creation, whether he formed it all or did not, He who surveys it all from his highest heaven, he verily knows it, or perhaps even he does not!
Of course, just like any other Sukta, what has been given here is merely the gist of its literal meaning. There are many commentaries that attribute a much deeper significance to this hymn and explain each term in great detail, but some of them use really "creative" interpretation of the words to arrive at their conclusions.

Every moment is sweet..

(Of course we have the unalienable right to make it sour)

We have already ruined many such moments by poisoning them with its past guilt and future anxieties..


We are likely to do the same if we do not live the present moment savouring its sweetness.. by living fully and completely in this moment..

If we fail to do so we would be burdening every coming moment with its past..and our anxieties would never cease..

Good and bad, happiness and unhappiness.. are all in our mind alone..

And we cannot change many things.. the choice is to take such things without grudge or murmur..

And happiness or unhappiness is just our own choice..

Whether we are happy or unhappy 
the sun will rise, 
the sun will go up
and 
the sun will set..

On Omkaaram.. the Pranavam



ब्रह्मणे त्वा महस ॐ इत्यात्मानं युन्ञ्जीत
( brahmaNe twaa mahasa AUM ityaatmaanaM yun~njiita )


"The self should be made one with the great Paramatma with the syllable OM," is the exhortation from Taittariya Shruti and is lending evidence to the concept that the basic function of OM is to bring about the unification of Jivatma and Paramatma.

There is a rule that any mantra will have its effect only if it is chanted in conjunction with Pranavam.
In the text Braahmanasarvaswam, it is said,

प्रणवाद्याः स्मृता मन्त्राः चतुर्वर्ग्ग फलप्रदाःतस्माच्च निःस्सृतास्सर्वे प्रलीयन्ते च तत्र वै
(ब्राह्मणसर्वस्वात्)
(praNavaadyaaH smR^itaa mantraaH chaturvargga phalapradaaH
tasmaachcha niHssR^itaassarve praliiyante cha tatra vai BraahmaNasarvaswaat)

Meaning "All mantras are meditated upon prefixing Om, and then alone they can give the four results or purushaarthaas, Dharma, Artha, Kama and Moksha.
In fact all such mantras originate from Pranavam and submerge in it ultimately,"

ॐ कारश्च शब्दश्च द्वावेतौ ब्रह्मणः पुराकण्डं भित्वाविनिर्यातौ तस्मान्माङ्गळिकवुभौ।
माङ्गळ्यं पावनं धर्म्म्यं सर्वकामप्रसाधनंॐ कारः परमं ब्रह्मः सर्वमन्त्रेषु नायकः।

AUM kaarashcha shabdashcha dwaavetau brahmaNaH puraa
kaNDaM bhitwaaviniryaatau tasmaanmaa~NgaLikavuabhau.

"The flow and the roar of Omkaram came out of the throat of Brahma virtually shattering it. (The throat)
It is capable of providing us with all Maangalyam.. meaning all the exalted aims and objects of life,
and so the flow and the sound of Omkaram are both called harbingers of Mangalam.
Provider of Mangalam, purifier of the self, the quintessence of virtues or Dharma, and the provider of all just and rightful desires,
Omkaram is called the forerunner or leader of all the manthras. "

यथा पर्ण्णं पलाशस्य शङ्कुनैकेन धार्यतेतथा जगदिदम् सर्वं ॐ कारेणैव धार्यते।
याज्ञवल्क्यात्

Yaajnavalkya praised Omkara like this.
" Just as the three leaves in a palasa stalk is held together by a single source ( palasa leaves occure in groups of three) the three worlds bhu, bhuva and suvaH are also held together only by pranavam.

You are the fruit.. Pazham nee appaa..


The Avvayar story which shows the lady saint as a mediator between the lord Murugan and his father Shiva after Murugan left his parents at Kailasam and lived alone in the Palani Hills seems to be a later addition to the lore.

Surely the period of Avvayar is much later than Agastya and Idumba who discovered Murugan at Palani earlier and had a glorious company.

The story is that Avvayar while wandering around..the place might be Palani too..found a boy sitting atop a jamun.. njaaval pazham tree.

The lady was hungry and it was hot in the midday.
The old lady asked the lad to throw down some fruits for her.
The impish boy asked..
" Grandmother, do you want hot fruits or cold fruits__ paatti ..shutta pazham venumaa sudaatha pazham venumaa? "

The granny was angry.. she thought the boy was making fun of her.
So being sure that a fruit from
a tree cannot be hot, she asked for the hot fruits.
The boy shook the branches of the tree and jamun fruits showered down.
The fruits were covered with dust.
So Avvai picked up the fruits and blew over them to remove the dust.
The naughty boy up the tree quipped.."Grandma the fruit is really hot is it not? You are blowing over them to make them cold."

The great lady then understood that the lad up in the tree was not an ordinary child.
It was the Son of Her lord Shiva.. the wonder child who was the personification of all the beauty anywhere and the sweet sweet language Tamil itself -Murugan

However the name Pazhani stuck to that place because the young Murugan had come there because a fruit was denied to him and his father lord Shiva who came in search of him told him "why should you ask for a fruit.?.you are yourself the fruit of all knowledge..pazham nee..பழம் நீ..

the essence of dharma..



श्रूयतां धर्मसर्वस्वं श्रुत्वा चैवावधार्यताम्।
आत्मनः प्रतिकूलानि परेषां न समाचरेत्॥
सूक्तिरत्नाकरे॥
śrūyatāṁ dharmasarvasvaṁ śrutvā caivāvadhāryatām|
ātmanaḥ pratikūlāni pareṣāṁ na samācaret||
sūktiratnākare||

May all listen to what is said about the correct Dharma or way of life..
After listening, the advice may be cautiously understood and put to use in their lives too..


The sum and substance of Dharma is that one should not do to others or wish for other what is proved to be not good for the doers themselves..

Usually, even the most naive person will have a gut feeling about what is good for himself.. and what is dangerous..

He would avoid unfavourable things with all caution and care..

If he has the good sense to realize that every other human being too is exposed to favourable and not so favourable things just like himself, 
and 
if he has the basic kindness and empathy,
he would not wish for others what is not good for himself..

Of course we can think of only normal, nice humans..
Perverts, sadists, egoists... they form separate classes.

A thought provoking statement by great Kalidasa.. 
The sages and ascetics living quietly in forests 
minding their own activities 
are predominantly calm and composed
and would appear very placid too.. 
But the great souls carry intense power within themselves.. 
If provoked, such power can flare up
and engulf the offenders and provokers..


The Sooryakantha gem, usually looks very innocuous and so pleasing and cool to touch ..
And the stone remains unnoticed unless and until it is exposed to the rays of the Sun.. 
But once the rays of the Sun falls on the stone, 
the stone emits intense heat and sparkles..


So the pious and placid people should never be provoked..

चीदंबरमिदं पुरं प्रथितमेव पुण्यस्थलं
सुताश्च विनयोज्वलाः सुकृतयश्च काश्चित् कृताः।
वयांसि मम सप्ततेरुपरि नैव भोगे स्पृहा
न किञ्चिदहमर्थये शिवपदं दिदृक्षे परम्॥
cīdaṁbaramidaṁ puraṁ prathitameva puṇyasthalaṁ
sutāśca vinayojvalāḥ sukṛtayaśca kāścit kṛtāḥ|
vayāṁsi mama saptaterupari naiva bhoge spṛhā
na kiñcidahamarthaye śivapadaṁ didṛkṣe param||

The great scholar and administrator Appayya Deekshitar, who officiated as chief minister to some kings in TamilNadu, like Arcot, was a very pious and down to earth person, although from very very humble beginnings, through sheer power of intellect and learning, he reached dizzying heights of personal glory..
He was a scholar without peers.. and he has written many books and commented on many texts, across many grammatical subjects in Sanskrit, and various schools of philosophy. Besides he was an authority in the traditional legal precedents and his interpretations are quoted with respect and approval even after six centuries of his passing.

For students of Sanskrit at all levels his work Kuvalayaanandam, a treatise of Alankarams in Sanksrit is almost like a bible..

After having spent seven decades of life in limelight, especially in Royal Courts and Vidvat Sadasses, he finally wanted to spent his final days in the land of Nataraja, the Lord of Dances,, the Deity close to his heart..
He retired to Chidambaram, and spent a simple life there in his seventies, and Neelakanda Deekshita, who would become one of the greatest poets of Sanskrit, and a Divan himself, was keeping him company..
Neelakanda Deekshita, a relative had been adopted as a grandson by Appayya Deekshita..

As if sensing that his tenure on this earth was coming to a close, he mentioned to Neelakanda Deekshita.. in the slokam given at the top of this post.

" This Chidambaram is a much praised holy land. My sons are and grandchildren are all behaving with me with all humility and obedience. I have crated some worthy books and have done some worthy deeds during my active life. Now may age is above seventy.. And I did never have any inclination for the worldly pleasures at any stage.. and that is more so now.
I have no more desires to be fulfilled.. I do not want anything more
I am yearning for the happy vision of that status of union with Shiva.. which is the ultimate one can hope to attain."

It is further mentioned by the biographer ( Shri Ramesan N) that Shri Appayya Deekshitar , after these worlds of his disciple, went into a trance, raising his vital energy through yogic powers from Mooladhara to Sahsraaraa.. and was about to take leave of the mortal body..
He tells Neelakanta Deekshitar agi

आभाति हाटकसभा नटपादपद्म
ज्योतिर्मयो मनसि मे तरुणरुणोऽयम्॥
ābhāti hāṭakasabhā naṭapādapadma
jyotirmayo manasi me taruṇaruṇo'yam||

The tawny red glow of the anklets adorning the Lotus feet of the Lord of Dance.. the Kanakasabhapathy.. Nataraja.. is just shining brightly in my mind
With these words, he attained samadhi..

What a way to live..
What a way to leave!

॥सङ्कटनाशन गणेशाष्टकम्॥
प्रणम्य शिरसा देवं गौरीपुत्रं गणेश्वरम्।
भक्तावासं स्मरेन्नित्यं आयुः कामार्थसिद्धये॥
प्रथमं वक्रतुण्डं च एकदन्तं द्वितीयकम्।
तृतीयं कृष्णपिङ्गाक्षं गजवक्त्रं चतुर्थकम्॥
लंबोदरं पञ्चमं च षष्ठं विकटमेव च।
सप्तमं विघ्नराजं च धूम्रवर्ण्णं तथाऽष्टमम्।
नवमं फालचन्द्रं च दशमं तु विनायकम्॥
एकादशं गणपतिं द्वादशं तु गजाननम्॥
द्वादशैतानि नामानि त्रिसन्ध्यं यः पठेन्नरः।
न च विघ्नभयं तस्य सर्वसिद्धिकरं परम्॥
विद्यार्थी लभते विद्यां धनार्थी लभते धनम्।
पुत्रार्थी लभते पुत्रान् मोक्षार्थी मोक्षमाप्नुयात्॥
जपेत् गणपतिस्तोत्रं षण्मासात् सफलं भवेत्।
संवत्सरेण सिद्धिं च लभते नात्र संशयः॥
अष्टानां ब्राह्मणानां च लिखित्वा यः समर्पयेत्।
तस्य विद्याः भवेत् सर्वा गणेशस्य प्रसादतः॥

Translation..

Bowing down with head on ground, we should daily meditate on Ganeshvara, the son of Mother Gauri, who is happy to take residence with his devotees.
He would bless us with long life and he would provide us with all that we fondly desire.
First, He is Vakratunda.. the one with his trunk beautifully curved
Second He is Ekadanta .. having one Tusk
Third He is Krishna pingaaksha.. having black red eyes
Fourth He is Gajavaktra.. the one with the face of an elephant
Fifth..He is Lambodhara.. the one with huge belly
Sixth.. He is Vikata.. the huge, imposing, naughty one
Seventh He is Vignaraja.. the one who is the king of obstacles, the one who can cause obstacles and one who can break all obstacles
Eighth… He is Dhoomravarnna.. the one who shines with a body with dark red colour like the buring fire with smoke around.
Ninth.. He is Phalachandra.. the one who is having the crescent of moon on his forehead.
Tenth..He is Vinayaka.. the one who is having no one to control or lead him.. because he is the greatest leader and he leads everyone and everything.
Eleventh.. He is Ganapathi… the leader of the group of Gods, the leader and controller of the soldiers and lieutenants of his beloved father Lord Shankara
Twelfth… He is gajanana.. who is having a head and face resembling an elephant..

If a man reads and recites the above twelve names of Lord Ganesha in the three Sandhyas.. Morning, midday and the Evening, he will have no fear from obstacles.. And all his endeavours would end in great success.

The student who recites these names will attain great knowledge

The one who recites the names praying for money would become immensely rich

The one who recites the names desiring for children would be blessed with nice and healthy children

And
The one who recites these names with emancipation or Moksham as his goal would attain that too.

A person reciting this stotram for six months would start getting positive results within six months.
And if he continues for one year with this stotram, he would attain all that he desired

If one respectfully presents this stotram in writing before eight learned brahmins, all the knowledge and skill would become his, because of the sweet grace of Lord Ganesha.

ശിരസ്സ്  ഭൂമിയില്‍ മുട്ടിച്ചു പ്രണമിച്ചു കൊണ്ട്  ലോകമാതാവായ ഉമാ ഗൌരിയുടെ ഓമനപ്പുത്രനായ ഗണേശ്വരനെ  മനസ്സില്‍ ധ്യാനിക്കാം.
 അദ്ദേഹത്തിനു ഭക്തന്മാരുടെ കൂടെ സന്നിഹിതനാവാന്‍ എന്നും സന്തോഷമാണ്.
 അദ്ദേഹം നമുക്ക് ദീര്‍ഘായുസ്സ് നല്‍കും.  നാം പ്രാര്‍ഥിക്കുന്നതെല്ലാം നമുക്ക് നല്‍കും

വക്രതുണ്ഡന്‍--ആകര്‍ഷകമായി വളഞ്ഞ തുമ്പിക്കൈ ഉള്ളവന്‍ എന്നതാണ് അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്‍റെ  ഒന്നാമത്തെ പേര്

ഏകദന്തന്‍--ഒരു കൊമ്പ് മാത്രം ഉള്ളവന്‍ -- എന്നത് അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്‍റെ രണ്ടാമത്തെ നാമം

കൃഷ്ണ പിംഗാക്ഷന്‍  - കറുപ്പും ചുവപ്പും നിറമുള്ള കണ്ണുകള്‍ ഉള്ളവന്‍.. അതാണ്‌ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്‍റെ  മൂന്നാം നാമം.

ഗജവക്ത്രന്‍  -- ആനയുടെ മുഖം ഉള്ളവന്‍.. അത് അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്‍റെ നാലാം നാമം.

ലംബോദരന്‍.. വളരെ വലിയ വയറ് ഉള്ളവന്‍.. ഇത് ഭഗവാന്‍റെ അഞ്ചാം നാമം

വികടന്‍..  വലിയ, രസികനായ കുസൃതിക്കാരന്‍..  അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്‍റെ ആറാം നാമം.


വിഘ്നരാജന്‍..  വിഘ്നങ്ങളുടെ രാജാവ്--  വിഘ്നങ്ങള്‍ സൃഷ്ടിക്കുവാനും അവയെ തുടച്ചുനീക്കുവാനും കഴിവുള്ളവന്‍..   ഭഗവാന്‍റെ ഏഴാമത്തെ ദിവ്യനാമം.


ധൂമ്രവര്‍ണ്ണന്‍..  തിളങ്ങി ജ്വലിക്കുന്ന കനല്‍ പോലെ കടും ചുവപ്പ് നിറമുള്ള  ശരീരത്തോടു കൂടിയവന്‍..   ഇത് ഗണപതിയുടെ എട്ടാം  നാമം.

ഫാലചന്ദ്രന്‍.. നെറ്റിയില്‍ ചന്ദ്രക്കല തിലകമായി കൊണ്ടവന്‍..  ഭഗവാന്‍റെ ഒമ്പതാം നാമം.


വിനായകന്‍..  തന്നെക്കാള്‍ ശ്രേഷ്ടനായ ആരും, തനിക്ക് നായകനായി ആരും ഇല്ലാത്ത ദിവ്യന്‍..  ഗണേശന്‍റെ പത്താം നാമം

ഗണപതി..  പിതാവായ ഭഗവാന്‍ ശങ്കരന്‍റെ  ഭൂതഗണങ്ങളുടേയും പിന്നെ ദേവഗണങ്ങളുടേയും നേതാവ് .. ഇത് ഭഗവാന്‍റെ പതിനൊന്നാം തിരുനാമം
