Vidura, deals with a wide gamut of issues in his discourse to his elder brother, and in this couplet he talks about the friendship that is true and soothing. " Friendship can be termed as worthwhile only if one need not have to be terrified about the outburst of the anger of the other friend while opening up his heart before the latter, and the friend need not be waited upon  with extreme caution for fear of retribution. A friend whom we can approach as if he is our own father, is a true friend. Other friendships are only incidental and of little consequence.

The human life is worth its existence only because of true friendships. No relation between humans can be more intimate and at the same time more sacred that true friendship. No inhibitions should mar the path of friendship. Many alleged friendships are just ad-hoc and when the show of friendship is between a person with some power over his inferior counterpart, such friendships rot into the state of master-servant relation. As a public gesture, the master may call his subordinate a friend but these are mere empty words. Vidura feels that the paternal feeling between friends as ideal. It is true. One need not have any reservations to open up his heart and unload the burden of all his woes before his father...for a father, the son, however good or bad he is, cannot be a burden.
I tend to be personal here.. I am performing my father's twenty fourth sraaddham (death anniversary) today... I know my father was more than a friend, more than everything else, to me.
