The seed of self-destruction had already germinated

The cardinal tenet of Sanatana Dharma is the theory of Karma.  Good deeds begets welfare and bad deeds are visited with punishment.  However some may have the impression that if a person has performed overwhelmingly good deeds and has also committed some deeds in contravention of virtue, the Karmaphalams would be the net result, something like balancing of the debit and credit side of a ledger account.  Such impression is erroneous.  The results for good Karmas will be enjoyed by the performer, but running parallel to it without any matching the effects of the bad Karmas also. One has to necessarily suffer the results of his bad deeds and he cannot claim remission on the plea that he has done good deeds which would be much larger in quantity.   All the scriptures and lore in Hinduism underline these two principles.. theory of karma, and the concept of non-compensation.

Here in Vaalmiki Ramayanam, Lord Hanuman is brought to the presence of Ravana, after a battle with Indrajit. Hanumanji, in fact, has voluntarily permitted the demons to capture him and brought before their king.  On seeing the grandeur of Ravana, Hanuman is overcome with respect for the adversary..He thinks that the penance and prowess of Ravaneswars is so great that if he had not indulged in the sin of abducting the Divine mother Seetha, there was no chance for the Gods or other adversaries of Ravaneswara to vanquish him. But laws of fate are too strict.  The demon has sinned, and He will have to pay the price for it. So Hanumanji addresses Ravaneswara to make good his grave sin by surredering to Rama and return Sita with honour and seek Rama's pardon, which probably may save Ravana. Aaanjaneyaswami during his speech, points out Ravana that he need not feel too confident that the good Karmas done by him will come to rescue.
" Oh Ravana, How are you going save your life?  Excessive performance of good deeds by you like penance of Lord Shiva, are not going to help you to atone the results of Adharma being perpetrated by you.  The results of good deeda and bad deeds have to be enjoyed or suffered separately.  You are living is such regal splendour because of your good deeds.  But now, if you are not careful. you are going to suffer severely for the adhaarmic deed perfromed by you."

It is another thing that when one's destruction is knocking at his doors, proper counselling will be of no avail..The seed of self-destruction had already germinated, as far as Ravana was considered.  The arrogant demon orders that Hanumanji should be executed.. but instead, he gets his Lanka gutted, and in due course pays for his sins with his life.
