read for yourself and dont send me curses.

how to trace the source....
this sloka would be reverberating in the minds of all who have had some experience with a priest for some pooja or pitru karma..
and may be the mindset of a priest transgresses the religious barriers also...
A priest is a priest whether he is a hindu, christian or muslim, parsee, or aadhivaasi or buddhist.
The simple meaning of the sloka is  that
"taking the first word 'Pu' from puurisha (stinking excreta)
 'R(o)' from rosha( uncontrallable anger),
'hi' from himsa (tendency to hurt others by all means possible)
and
'tha' from thaskara ( the highwayman or looter or trained thief)
the Creator Brahma made the word and form of purohita... the priest.

May be this is said in a lighter vein, but  we cannot ignore our sufferings at the hands of this kind of demigods.
May be he takes some sprinkling of water which may be called a bath
but in his breakneck run for sharing the spoils be it a marriage or death,
he has no time to clean himself
(hence the aroma).

He is always angry because he is never satisfied with any amount of Dakshina or Tythe ....and for all other fellow humans he harbours only vilolent feelings
and
given a chance he will not shy away from beating out the guts out of you,
and
by profession he is a wonderful personification of all the thieves either born or to be born...
see how a man of this species gives a list of all things under the sun for even a small cermony
( the list has more relevance to what the man  is not having in his house than to the ceremony at hand)
and
bundles away all unused things  and carries them with elan in his bike or Car, according to his seniority as a plunderer.

Apologies to the genuine sincere preceptors, but I feel sorry and distressed  thatmajority of the priests were/are so avariocious in every epoch  of time....
they caused mishaps in vedic and upanishadic episodes,
 there were Rasputins,
they presided over the precipitation of Revolution in France...
they brought out the best in seers Like Adi shankara because they had the temerity to put hassles even in the path of such a great man..
the way they harrassed Shankara when His mother passed away would stand eternal testimony to the sterling qualities of the priests

anxiety the killer

citā cintā tayormaddhye cintānāma garīyasī|
citaa dahati nirjīvaṁ cintā prāṇayutāṁ vapuḥ||

subhāṣitaṁ

When compared to the funeral pyre, nagging anxiety is a more potent means of burning.   A dead human body alone is burned to ashes at the funeral, but when a living human being is tormented by sad and depressing thoughts, his living body itself is getting burnt, perhaps in a slow but effective way.

When I came across this sloka of ancient wisdom, though very simple but precise, I was awed at the insights our forefathers have gained in human psychology millennia ago.
The slogan of " healthy body can only exist with a healthy mind" was dished out by modern pep writers and psychologists of western breed only in the last century or at best by some in the earlier century.
But Indian thought always underlined the effect of anxiety in the holistic health of a human being.  We can see the thoughts reflected in may ancient writings.. In Ramayana the thoughts of separation from Rama could be seen as the cause of death of his father Dasaratha. The same thought is reflected in Jayadeva's astapadi,  when the bard sings about Radaha' plight at the separation with Madhava... Saa virahe tava diinaa,  madhava manasija visikhabhayadiva bhavanaya twayi leena....that Radha is sick just because of the thought of separation from you..  the pathos of Radha's separaation from Krishna can be read in all its vividity in this legend of love everywhere. One can also  read about the excessive jubliliation of Radha and Hari when they are united ultimately.  The yoga aphorisms of Patanjali starts with the admonition to chaannelise the activities of the mind... yogah chithavrittinirodhah.. because the master knew well than anything worthwhile can be performed by this human body only if it divested of anxious thoughts.  It is an acknowledged fact that the whole world is now unanimous in the view that the regulation of anxiety and stress through the oriental prescriptions of yoga and meditation alone can sustain the human race in a healthy shape.

Among many things that came out of the milky ocean when it was churned by the gods and demons, two remarkable products are the most destructive  poison Halahalam  which was gobbled up by Bagavaan Siva  so that the universe would be saved.  Subsequently the goddess of wealth Rema also appeared. Lord Vishnu embraced her and married her.  People talk big of Rema and fear Halahalam as a killer poison. But the fact is just the opposite.  Rema (wealth) is the real poison. One can see the evidence. Siva is always staying awake and healthy in spite of the poison. But from the moment Vishnu touched Rema, He is in deep sleep, oblivious of anything else.
Here the important message of the subhashitam is that when  people come by large wealth they simply forget everything else in the world and enter into a state of stupour where they are blind to everything other than amassing wealth.  Even the most potent venom cannot change people to this extent.
Maybe that is the reason why we collect the incometax ... to take away the excessive wealth  and cure people of their sleepy habits.
we want all people to be fully awake.. What better shock treatment can be there?

Namaskarams,  I think no one here is actually critical of advaitam per se.   In fact the greatest process of thought that has ever emanated from human intellect is undoubtedly the advaita philosophy.  The anxiety expressed by me was about the inaction amongst the Hindus. It is only advaitam that can unite the Hindu, when the philosophy propounds the existence of only one truth, the petty squabbles on account of caste, creed etc.,  have  to vanish.   If the atheist in Nietsche has to say that if you are not having a god you have to create one, we had to start  moving ahead from gothra cults and multitude of gods and demigods .  Ultimately advaita was the final summit of Indian thought and I doubt whether we can proceed further to anything more sublime.  However,  just as Sankara and Sri Narayana Guru both understood, the votaries of  our religion developed unnecessary prejudices and divided themselves into groups where the sense of belonging to that group was more pronounced than the pride of being a part of Hinduism.  At present  the social inequities have  more or less been ironed out.   Why cant we go on to strive for the benefit of the religion as a whole?  It is a very painful truth that we Hindus have never risen above our group identities.  We will not even hesitate to think of various advaitas like Sankaras advaita,  Chinmayas advaita and Narayana's advaita.   If this delusion does not disappear, we will never make any progress.  The ethos of Hinduism are noble.  I dont believe  elitism of being born in a caste, or even in a religion will make any sense or serve any purpose.   When the very roots of the religion are rotting we should never be complacent professing from pulpits about the greatness of philosophy alone.  Poet Bharatiar could see the blackness of Krishna in the wings of a crow, the green colour of that wayward urchin in all trees and he could even feel the euphoria of embracing the eternal lover when he put his hands onto fire. Sarvam Krishnamayam. That is advaita  But the same person roared like a lion.. If a single individual is not having means to get a single meal we will give him  the entire world...he had the foresight to understand that only individual welfare will lead us to collective happiness.  The hungry stomach carries in it the seed of rebellion and mere philosophy will never quench the fire of protest.  When the proletariat French asked for bread, the arrogant queen quipped that" if they have not bread let them eat cakes"..The result?

tough nut to crack

The genuinely noble persons are like the coconut fruits.  They will look crude outside, you have to tear off the external fibres and  break the intervening hard shell to reach at the nourishing sweet core and the elixir inside.  The great ones will never show off their innate virtues, but one has to get near them and understand them and then the soft and benevolent heart will be understood.  On the contrary the hypocrites are like the Badari fruits ( we call them ilanthippazham, ilanjippazham or lanthappazham in tamil and malayalam) which look very beautiful on the skin but when the colurful skin is peeled off only the hard unbreakable and useless seed will be found inside.

BURNED BISCUITS.

this is a forward from my dearest friend Karunakaran.  It touches certain parts of the heart in an inexplicable way
BURNED BISCUITS...............

When I was a kid, my mom liked to make breakfast food for dinner every now and then. And I remember one night in particular when she had made breakfast after a long, hard day at work. On that evening so long ago, my mom placed a plate of eggs, sausage and extremely burned biscuits in front of my dad. I remember waiting to see if anyone noticed! Yet all my dad did was reach for his biscuit, smile at my mom and ask me how my day was at school. I don't remember what I told him that night, but I do remember watching him smear butter and jelly on that biscuit and eat every bite!
When I got up from the table that evening, I remember hearing my mom apologize to my dad for burning the biscuits. And I'll never forget what he said: "Honey, I love burned biscuits."
Later that night, I went to kiss Daddy good night and I asked him if he really liked his biscuits burned. He wrapped me in his arms and said, "Your Momma put in a hard day at work today and she's real tired. And besides - a little burned biscuit never hurt anyone!"

You know, life is full of imperfect things.....and imperfect people. I'm not the best at hardly anything, and I forget birthdays and anniversaries just like everyone else.
What I've learned over the years is that learning to accept each other's faults - and choosing to celebrate each other's differences - is one of the most important keys to creating a healthy, growing, and lasting relationship.
We could extend this to any relationship. In fact, understanding is the base of any relationship, be it a husband-wife or parent-child or friendship!
"Don't put the key to your happiness in someone else's pocket - keep it in your own."
God Bless You.....  Now, and Always....

she is fire

nāgnim mukhena dhamet nagnāṁ nekṣeta ca striyaṁ

One should not try to put off the fire by blowing at it direct with his mouth.  One should never look at a woman who is not without any clothes. One should not throw dirty things into fire and one should never spread his feet toward the agni (fire) to get them warm.

The sloka is in recognition of the great potency  and greatness of the fire God, and the basic tenet that one should not show disrespect to fire. Of course there is great danger in blowing out fire direct, and there is even greater danger in inhaling the products of tobacco etc being burnt by the fire.  If we throw dirty things into the fire, atmospheric pollution, unbearable stink etc will be the result. Showing our legs at a respectable person is considered a heinous crime in our culture.  The most important part of this sloka is that the respectability of a woman is equated to that of fire.  It is not only in this sloka but in many dharmasaastras it has been reiterated that one should never cast his eyes on a woman when she is not decently dressed. In fact the prohibition applies even to a husband or a son. The intention is to uphold the dignity,  virtue and greatness of womanhood.  The nudist culture of the present generation , the medieval architecture and literature with graphic descriptions and portrayal of nudity and the ultramodern hypocrites like Hussain may disagree. I personally agree that it is a crime  to show any disrespect to the female. Perceptions can vary.  If you watch the abhishekam of divine mother in temples, you would find that sensible aacharayas always cover Her body  with red clothes  during such occasions. May be the mother is so beautiful that our dark minds may  for a moment  veer around to sinful thoughts..

A sensible fellow should not  reuse
the footwear used by someone else.
He should avoid  used clothes also.
Other materials in the used list which should not be taken over by others are,
the holy thread( yajnopaviitams),
bed,
and the water  pot used for religious purposes by ascetics (kamandalu).
And sure, it is not ideal to marry the wife of another man.
Footwear, clothes and thread, may carry the diseases and germs of the wearer and perhaps also make one successor to the fortunes of the original owner  .
So when reused by another they may prove hazardous.
According to traditional  beliefs the danda, kamandala etc are the sole worldly possessions of a sannyasi and if another takes it away it will be tough on the poor Sannyasi.

Opinions may vary about remarriages at present but reference of remarriage is in consonance with the Hindu ehtos of yonder years.

Sure, one cannot take away the spouse of another living person .. just like Ravana or Bali did..

meditation

After completing all the puranas and monumental works Krishnadwaipaayana the Vyasa came to the conclusion
āloḍya sarvaśāstrāṇi vicārya ca punaḥ punaḥ
idamekaṁ suniṣpannaṁ dhyeyo nasrāyaṇo hariḥ
after going through all spiritual texts and after repeated contemplation only this much can be concluded without dispute... one has to meditate upon Narayana the Hari..
It says everything. Substitute any name in the place of Narayana the Hari, because we worship Him as having infinite number of names
sahasranāmne puruṣāya śāśvate-- here sahasra does not indicate a thousand but the uncountable).
If we start perceiving finite things in the infinite, it is an indication that our mind goes astray. The finite should be annihilated from the mind. That may be the killing.. the finite finally merging with the infinite.
Meditation has no religion or creed. So also the Universal Master.

We cannot expect any gratitude in this world.

aho sasadṛśī vṛttiḥ maddaḻasya khalasya ca
yāvanmukhagataṁ piṇḍaṁ tāvanmadhurabhāṣaṇaṁ

subhāṣitaśatakatrayaṁ

Indeed the attitude of maddhalam and the timeserving evil fellow are the same.  Both speak to you in sweet words only so long as the morsels of cooked rice provided by you are available on their mouth.

Maddhalam is a percussion instrument, the larger version of mridangam. The percussionist has to keep its leather face tight but slightly damp and pliant by applying starch soaked in water (he  uses  cooked rice for this ) if he is to get sufficient decibel and pitch always. Once the effect of the starch disappears the maddhalam starts to give unpleasant and uneven sounds[apaswaram].  Similar is the case with the idiotic fellows also.  So long as we feed them, and the morsel of rice is still tasty in their mouths, they speak sweet words about us. Once the morsel goes down the throat, the giver is also forgotten and we can hear foul words about us from the same mouths. We cannot expect any gratitude in this world.

as long as there exist on the face of this earth the mountains and rivers till then the story of Ramayanam will be established here.

my respected friends, this is a repetition. not exactly because I have gone dry of themes..  From today onwards, for the month of Karkidakam, we  pay tribute that great epic Ramayanam...It is the  living monument of the purity, loftiness, truth and all that is great for which our Bharathavarsha stood for.  Ramayanam is not a fiction, not a string of words, not merely the worship of the parabrahmam in mortal human form  but it is a testament of faith for an Indian.  We believe there was  a millenium here which stood for dharma alone,  and the everlasting  promise of hope that even though truth and  virtue may be eclipse for a limited period,  great values always triumph in the end. Let me quot a beautiful couplet from Valmiki ramayanam
sa rāmaḥ parṇaśālāyaṁ āsīnaḥ saha sītayā
virarāja mahābāhuḥ citrayā candramaa iva
the man born to be the emperor of the world, Rama, along with Sita the Goddess of wealth incarnate, sat in a hut made of wild leaves and they radiated their brillianace like the full moon in chaitra...where the constellation of chitra stars come in union with the full moon in vasntha rtu.  Yes, the greatest ever born took this form only to uphold dharma, no, he is the embodiment of dharma
rāmo vigrahavān dharmaḥ
may the mere utterance of the name of that Lord of Lords, wash away all our sins and establish dharma in this world.

Subject: The crime is the same!!!
To:

[]
A worried woman went to her gynecologist and  said:
'Doctor, I have a serious problem and desperately need your  help! My baby is not even 1 year old and I'm pregnant again. I don't want  kids so close together.

[]
So the doctor said: 'Ok and what do you want me to do?'
She said: 'I want you to end my pregnancy, and I'm  counting on your help with this.'
The doctor thought for a little,  and after some silence he said to the lady: 'I think I have a better  solution for your problem. It's less dangerous for you too.'
She  smiled, thinking that the doctor was going to accept her request.
Then he continued: 'You see, in order for you not to have to take  care 2 babies at the same time, let's kill the one in your arms.

This way,  you could rest some before the other one is born. If we're going to kill  one of them, it doesn't matter which one it is.
There would be no risk for  your body if you chose the one in your arms. []
The lady was horrified and said: 'No doctor! How  terrible! It's a crime to kill a child!
'I agree', the doctor replied.  'But you seemed to be OK with it, so I thought maybe that was the best  solution.

The doctor smiled, realizing that he had made his point.
He convinced the mom that there is no difference in killing a  child that's already been born and one that's still in the womb.

The crime  is the same! []
If you agree, please forward.  Together we can help save precious lives!
Learn from Yesterday,  live for Today, hope for Tomorrow..

Yes, such people are capable of murdering even Brahma himself.

It is indeed a very stiff admonition

If a person without  scientific and thorough learning and proper training  practices prediction through astrology, indulges in legal arguments, prescribes expiatory measures, or does treatment for diseases he should be considered   a murderer of the Brahma himself.

The sloka may appear very innocuous.  But see the realities of life.  How many amateur astrologers who have not even seen the elementary texts of astrology, are found sitting (nowadays) in the company of laptops and reeling off predictions about your past, present or future... and anything can be justified by a glib tongue especially when the audience is  impressionable ( and in this matter one finds even the most astute persons gullible), and causing havoc in the lives of others?.  The influence of such evil astrologers are very prominent especially in the marriage market..before marriage, during marriage  and when some hard luck strikes after marriage and the same is credited to the account of the poor female.
Then take the case of lawyers who are also probably liers. They promise  everything under the sun to their clients but the fat  law-books stacked for all to see  in their chambers and the journals they subscribe to are only pieces of exhibition.  When raising for argument before the honourable bench, they cannot go beyond " Your Honour.... I pray for a short adjournment".  The client's fate is doomed in their hands.
And there are the so called saints and swamis, who claim to have attained revelation and sit in the comfort of their air-conditioned parnasaalas (the holy leaf abodes)  eagerly waiting to pounce upon any victim who may come near.  They reveal very intricate truths (!) about the sins of the victim and prescribe remedies and the ultimate result is that the victim is divested of whatever wealth or good sense he has and lands up in a state of confusion (fortunately not kanfusion)  which is dished out as absolute bliss (if not for the victim, for the swamiji)

Last but not the least comes the quack.. a medical practitioner without any proper knowledge. We can meet  the animals in the market under various breeds and pedigrees, allopathy, homeopathy, aayurveda, unani,  siddha, reiki, pranic, yogic, herbal or holistic..to mention only a few.  Even the healthiest man should take very hefty insurance policies before visiting such great creatures. One's death is assured.

Such avatars manifest in the world repeatedly.
Their  most gullible victims are young girls who get into some unwanted troubles, people who come into  possession of some secret but shameful diseases and people with more money than they can think of spending in the right way.
Even the Income tax man will take away your money but permit you to live,  but these quacks will rob you of your money and will not be kind enough to  spare your life.
One interesting common factor for all the above demons is that they will always have a retinue of well trained touts.

Yes, such people are capable of murdering even Brahma himself.

If you have no great men around, seek them out

പാപം താപം ച ദൈന്യം ച ഘ്നന്തി സന്തോ മഹാശയാ;

By having a bath in river Ganga and worshipping her, one's sins are washed off.  The soothing rays of the moon cures one of mental depression and dejection.  The celestial Kalpavriksha when worshipped,  divests one of his poeverty.  But the  presence and guidance of great seers and gurus will drive away all the three, sin, dejection and poverty.
A noble soul, if present in  place, drives away all the sins in and around him.  He gives solace to all  around himwho are in utter mental or physical pain.   Prosperity seeks him voluntarily.  The people around him are all benefited by this because he has no selfish motives.
If you have no great men around, seek them out  and if it is difficult, become great men.

Fwd: In case of an emergency - 'ICE'

Subject: In case of an emergency - 'ICE'
To:

Lees dit /Read this(It is a Good tip)

Apparently this is a standard procedure all paramedics follow at the scene of an accident when they come across your cell phone.

We all carry our mobile phones with names & numbers stored in its memory but nobody, other than ourselves, knows which of these numbers belong to our closest family or friends.

If we were to be involved in an accident or were taken ill, the people attending us would have our mobile phone but wouldn't know who to call. Yes, there are hundreds of numbers stored but which one is the contact person in case of an emergency?

Hence this 'ICE' (In Case of Emergency) Campaign

The concept of 'ICE' is catching on quickly. It is a method of contact during emergency situations.  As cell(mobile) phones are carried by the majority of the population, all you need to do is store the number of a contact person or persons who should be contacted during emergency under the name 'ICE' ( In Case Of Emergency).

The idea was thought up by a paramedic who found that when he went to the scenes of accidents, there were always mobile phones with patients, but they didn't know which number to call. He therefore thought that it would be a good idea if there was a nationally recognized name for this purpose. In an emergency situation, Emergency Service personnel and hospital Staff would be able to quickly contact the right person by simply dialing the number you have stored as 'ICE.'

For more than one contact name simply enter ICE1,ICE2 and ICE3 etc. A great idea that will make a difference!

Let's spread the concept of ICE by storing     an ICE number in our  Mobile phones today!

Please forward this. It won't take too many 'forwards' before everybody will know about this It really could save your life, or put a loved one's mind at rest .

ICE will speak for you when you are not able to.

I have stored my home number as A Home so that it appears first in the address book!!!

a repetition on mother, but who can resist it?

The punyas which one can gain by going around the entire eatth in pradakshina, or by visiting the holy city of Kaashi ten thousand times or by taking bath in the ramasethu ghatta thousands of times  can be easily earned by a person who will respectfully offers his pranams to his mother.

True, all philosophers of east and west, all followers of many "isms" and theories,  would find themselves stranded miles short when they venture to define the phenomenon called mother.  It is noble femininity at its sublimest.  Nothing in this world or in other places known or unknown can find us a greater acquisition that our own mothers.. It is not without thought that we compare our land with mother, the holy cow with mother, the goddess with mother...but mother can be a standard for comparison for many others things, but what is the yardstick for measuring the greatness of motherhood.
Even a late middleaged fellow like me who is already doddering,  possess the greatest treasure I can have, my mother a widowed lady of more than eight, short of hearing, having no teeth nor any appetite mostly sitting on a remote corner of the house without care for anything except her children and  grandchildren..what a phenomenon..she will spring into action the moment she sees a cloud of disturbance on the face of any of us.  This must be true for every one living on this earth.

never be a borrower

For the man with discretion money give by others (maybe as loan or gift) causes only misery while for all others coming by money can cause only excessive pleasure (irrespective of the source of money) . The extract of the sandal tree (born in the precincts of Malaya mountains) gives euphoric sensation when applied all over the body but it causes damage to the eye if it is applied inside there.

For the sensitive people when they get something for free, it is only embarrassment. For others it is "beg , borrow or steal" and enjoy. They say the money earned by selling a dog will not bark. The sandal oil when applied to eye can cause loss of vision, whereas for the whole body the same is a rejuvenating experience.

even God will not create disorder

Friends, I had an invigorating discussion with a learned person and what transpired from my side, I feel would be enough food for thought for one day.
Hence I am sending this in a different format.

Respected Sir, the matter is rather complicated.
In His exalted wisdom Lord has created so many things and it has evolved under a definite pattern.

And His creation, management or sustenance and destruction, maybe we can all it as Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva forms has been going on with absolute precision for eons now.
The entire process has gathered momentum.

Now even the Supreme one cannot stop the process without applying proper brakes and retro power, and if He does it there will be chaos and also miserable destruction without justice.

Of course, if the Lord had deemed it fit not to create all these things even when we are all feeling the existence only under the influence of Maya and there is nothing real about it, maybe even then, the apparent sufferings could have been avoided.

But the greatness of our Lord is that he made the law and he made himself as a follower of the law.. no immunity for himself.

Pehaps the story of the two upanishadic birds have to console us.

dvā suparṇā sayujāḥ sakhāyāḥ samānaṁ vṛkṣam pariṣasvajāte

tayorannyaḥ pippalaṁ svādyatyanaśnannanyo'picākaśīti

mundakopanishat/shvetasvataropanishad.
(this sloka can be found in may other treatises also)

two birds are in the identical tree and there are fruits of varous tastes filling the birds' abode.
One bird is detached.. it simply watches at the world in bliss.

The second cuts its beak on every fruit and according to the taste of the fruit, sweet, sour, bitter etc the bird also has swings of mood.

Why do we try to taste the fruits and invite misery?

In Bible also we can find the story of Adam who tasted the forbidden fruit and became subject to pleasure and pain.
In fact there was a specific order by the God that such fruit should not be tasted.
It is said

sukhasya duḥkhasya na kopi dātā paro dadātīti kubuddireṣā

ahaṁ karomīti vṛthābhimānaḥ svakarmasūtragrathito hi lokaḥ

(अध्यात्मरामायणे from Adhyatmaramayanam)

Pleasure or pain are not provided to us by anyone else, if we think someone else can make us comfortable of otherwise, our intellect is faulted,
and
if we attribute to ourself the authorship of things or doership of actions, it is sheer arrogance...
the world is tied by the strong rope of Karma..

So, to sum up, we can make prayers and entreaties to Krishna if we want, but we are nowhere near suffiecient enlightenment to challenge the rationale behind his acts of commission or omission.

dethroned

rājā kulavadhū viprā  mantriaśca payodharā
sthānabhraṣṭhā na śobhante dantā keśā narā nakhā

subhaitaśatakatraya
chanakyaneeti
The king, the daughter in law of a noble family, the learned men, ministers, the breasts, the teeth, the hair, men and the nails do not shine when they are displaced from the appropriate place meant for them.
If a king is dethroned his fate is well known.
A noble woman falling into some unfortunate trap loses all that is great in her.
If the learned man is not finding his place in exalted circles but has to be in the midst of ignorant and idiotic men, his life becomes unbearable.
The ministers, past and present, when out of power, are mere ghosts of their old selves.  Likewise  the breasts, if they are not in the right place would make a person ugly..  The fate of a man dismissed from his position is also not different.
Similarly if the teeth are deformed,
the hair is either growing out of place or absent in the proper place,
or is cut away by a barber,
if nails are appearing in the most unwanted places,
the human appearance becomes its ugliest worst.
(this slokam is found in a book  called Chanakya Neeti too..   but  was it  the great Chanakya who wrote this.. ?)
