This is a very valuable quote from one of the five mahakavyaas of Sankrit, Kiraatarjuneeyam of Bharavi.
The famous storyline for this sublime poetic creation is derived from the Indian Epic Mahabharatham,
While living in exile in forest the Pandavas. the irritating news that even after perpetrating so much injuries through deception and treachery, Duryodhana their enemy and his brothers and living in pomp and power .
Naturally, the younger brothers of the righteous king Yudhistira and the queen Draupadi and not able to conceal their anguish and . and they are raring for revenge.
But the words of wisdom come from the righteous King Dharmaputra.
He says,
Those whose aim in life is to attain success and prosperity,
the prosperity and success which are of ever lasting and strategic value ,
the prosperity and success whose value is perennial,
the prosperity and success which yield only positive benefits in great abundance,
the property and success which are earned through blemishless action
lead their heroic lives setting aside the tendency to act in thoughtless rage because such impulsive action under the influence of rage will destroy whatever advantages they already possess.
How true!
To attain and enjoy Royal eminence are really splendid.
But to fulfill one's aims one has to think well before embarking on acrimonious actions.
Decisions taken under the influence of anger can result only in self destruction

In the celebrated Adhyaatma Ramayanam Kilippattu by the father of Malayalam Language,, Thunjathu Ramanujan Ezhuthassan, there is an incident where Lakshmana the younger brother of Rama is overboard with rage and is readying himself to take arms against his own father Dasharatha who had decreed that the noble Rama should be denied the kingdom and that Rama should live in forest for 14 years.. Lord Rama himself reasons with the impetuous younger brother Lakshmana and manages to calm him down.. The advise of Rama to Lakshmana is a masterpiece in Malayalam literature.

My lovely brother Lakshmana,
Rage is capable of terminating all our efforts for good life on this earth with our aim to finally reach Moksham or emancipation..
A man in rage may even slay his own father, mother, brother and friends,,,
Through rage one will lose all mental peace. Anger will bind people to the miseries of the worldly life.
Being in anger is the sign that a person has been drained of all the accumulated dharma or virtue in the world and the other world..
A wise man should definitely abandon anger.
Verily, anger is the same as the God of Death Yama..

sir , there is a lot of difference between knowing something genuinely and just trying to impress others that I know something.
Basically I discuss only things which I have fairly understood.
And on such issues I would present to others only ten per cent of what I would know.
So, there will be always adequate material available with me for many supplementary questions.
Often I realize that Facebook is not the forum for such comprehensive discussion.
Here discussions happen impulsively and emotionally and the person making his post does not consider bound by the duty and courtesy of defending himself.
Empty shots in the air are made too often.
That is not my cup of tea.
I am here only because I have no other real and effective forum to express myself.
I was not lucky at any point in my life.
That streak of misfortune will haunt me for ever.
On the points I make I usually would have prepared myself to argue my case even before the highest judicial fora.

A lion is having its relaxed siesta in the forest. It is absolutely silent.
A stray dog is just standing somewhere near and is barking its heart out seing the lion. The lion just ignores the barks because it thinks that it would be a useless exercise to use his own very sharp fingernails which are capable of shattering the forehead of an elephant in rut, just to ward off the nuisance of a silly dog.
However, noticing the silence of the lion, the dog is increasing its barking thinking that the lion is afraid of it.

Extremely uncontrollable anger,
Impossibly harsh words,
Poverty in mind spirit and physically too,
Hatred enmity and intolerance towards own people,
Company with evil minded people,
And serving lowly people who are engaged in ignoble aactivities,
These are the manifest signs found in people who are ready to depart towards hell as also who have already reached there ..

Most of the relationships in life are not based on love and/ or having little love..
A couple may be devoted to each other in excessive yearnig in the earlier periods of courtship and marital bliss .. but physical, material and psychological factors do make dent even in this relation and after sometime --it is just sheer adhustment...nothing particularly right or wrong about it..
And love for the offspring is also conditional in parents..especially after the youthful stage.. even though such affection is at its peak whhen the children are very young .
Itcannot be denied that social compulsions also play a role in that too...
And as the children grow up and grow their own wings, the same amount of love cannot be expected to be returned..
In fact, the gesture of caring for old parents comes more from social compulsions rather than love or even gratitude..
This is natural.
No one need be blamed for that..
Each one has a role to play and once he leaves the stage, limelight will not follow him..
But the conflict arises because the characters who should exit and wash off the makeup,
are trying to sing and dance, and hindering the new players whose term has already come..
Things will be more clear if we can see the issue from the perspective of the one who goes out and also the one who comes in
Our judgment gets clouded when we empathize with one person or point of view in preference to the other party to the transaction and the latter's state of mind...
The biological aspects of love are more real, and love would remain strong to bond the persons concerned as long as that aspect endures..
The other aspects of love, like idealism social, spiritual, etc have really not much of bonding effect in the long run.
Let us be realistic..

musings 181

What is present around or even inside us need not be entirely to our liking.. God has not created any particular being to live all by/on his own and according to his own wishes entirely.

The world is not created for the convenience of any particular individual being..

Strangely God has created a hierarchy of life where some can exist only by killing and eating some others..

But life cannot go on by fighting and offering resistance what is available,
even if such available things are mostly inconvenient and undesirable..

Often the best way would be not to avoud carefully such unpleasant things..

However that is not always possible
Troubles will come in search of us whether we want them or not ..

"Life is not a carnival or a comedy movie where we can find only happiness.
If there is a head, there will be headache too
and
for every nose there will be cold..
It is a fortune that nice too happen, and we have to enjoy them since such happiness is not likely to persist for long..

We have to learn to put up with, tolerate, and accept stoically things that happen to us when no possible remedy is in sight..

If there is some way of mitigating such pain, we need not hesitate to explore that too.
Even a terminally ill throat cancer patient can sing to himself..albeit in a hoarse manner.

And we should always remember.. happiness is a state of mind and we can create happiness for ourselves, and no one else can really do that for ourselves..
This is true for unhappiness too..

And we can trust in God..
He never permits anyone to exist beyond a tolerance level of pleasure or pain..

He ensures that the system cures itself and bounces back to normaly..
or
alternately the system perishes to death which is a point of no return..

However a cow elephant takes lots of time in confinement to give birth to a nice healthy calf.. This calf get nurtured and fondled by rulers of men.
The pregnancy period for a pig is about 114 days and in a single litter thare can be numerous tiny piglets. However the cow elephant is pregnant for twentyfour months, and she would deliver only single calf.
However a pig is a pig and an elephant is an elephant.

musings 180

God's schemes are on an eternal canvas, and we are created or sent to this earth for fleetingly tiny slots of time.
Judging by the bafflingly huge canvas, does it really matter whether we have an opinion of an issue or not..?
A man standing on the top of the Empire State Building and contemplating of jumping down may be having conflicting views for himself..
But does it matter much to the building as such..?
I do not feel that on the face of the infinite and eternal wisdom of that Supreme being (I do believe it is Krishna), even a Vyasa or Emerson or a newborn baby or an illiterate would make much of a difference in the realm of thought and wisdom
Krishna said it subtly in Gita.. PanditaaH samadarshinaH..

musings 179

Rama's minister Jabaali advised him that Rama should earn a lot of money because finances were the basis of existence of the whole world.. and he said that there was hardly any difference between a penniless person and a dead person
Shankara said that relatives and friends would throng around a person only so long as he is able to earn money.. Once the capacity to earn ceases the person has to remain in a remote corner of his house and even the close family members would not deem it fit to talk to him
Shankara put it in a negative way.. He was not interested in acquiring any material wealth.. he is a recluse and it suits him fine..
But the advice by Jaabaaali, a votary of materialism to the would-be ruler of a kingdom,, is just practical wisdom..
For a king, who is to provide for the needs of his subjects and protect them too, poverty cannot be a strong point, definitely not a quality he could boast about.... Without money, he cannot maintain peace and order in his area..
In fact even to pretend as a beggar, one should have a good bank balance.. The make up materials can cost a fortune..
Anyway neither Shankara, nor Jabali were just lip sympathizers to their causes.. Both really believed in what they said..
But we of the present generation, would pretend that we are poor and that we are holy, holier than all others, fully knowing that we are deceiving ourselves and others too..
This is an era of double standards, no, multiple standards..

There is a slokam that is supposed to convey
the advice given by one of the learned ministers (Jabali(?))to Rama some say it is Jabaali, some say it is Vasishta himself.. this sloka is seen
quoted in Subhashitabhandagaram)
dhanamaarjaya kaakutstha dhanamoolamidam jagat
antaram naiva pashyaami nirdhanasya mruthasya cha
Rama the scion of Kakutsa (त्वं you ) धनं money आर्जय earn .. इदं जगत् this world धनमूलम वर्तते is rooted in money ..( अहं ) निर्धनस्य penniless indigent person मृतस्य dead person (च मध्ये ) in between अन्तरं difference न एव not ever पशायामि. am seeing..
My dear Kaakutsa, the Rama, You must consolidate your finances, earn more money,,, the world has its roots and existence only in wealth.. I do not see much difference between a man without money and a man who is dead..
( I have heard it as being quoted from Ramayanam.. but I have not verified.. it may be in some Paadabhedam or even a prakshitptam... but the philosophy is very straightforward and articulate.. and pragmatic too)

musings 178

When we read a subhashitam or a great quote, we tend to agree with the contents heartily or at least pretend to do so and mark approvals in glowing terms..
But it will be good for all to remeber that most quotes and subhashitams are crafted to suit some specific situations and specific set of people although this may not be apparent from such quotes..
For a man in distress, if he has some physical strength, it is nice and ideal to fight t and win..
But will the same idea apply to a terminally ill person? Only palliative care will work there..
We cannot exhort a doddery old person to go fighting in Kargil or Kupwara
So we can just understand the spirit of a great saying and shuld try to emulate it at the proper situation and in the appropriate context..
Just because they say god is everywhere and even in stones, we cannot retain with reverence the stones in our rice, or in our kidney or gall bladder
Many people are simply immature in thought and action..
They go by slogans.. or slokams.
Realities of life are often lost on them.
Leaders of masses and politicians in general, spiritual leaders, actors in stage and celluloid all cash in on this immaturity of approach on our part..
No two situations can be same..
And usually solutions are to be found on the basis of specific situations..
So adages and quotes are nice but we should take them only with some pinches of salt..

Lord Shiva the Supreme Mahadeva is called Astamurthy because He is manifesting Himself in eight forms which constitute the fundamental ingredients or objects of all that is present in this Universe.
In Bhavishya Puranam the eight most famous names of the Lord and their forms are narrated as listed above.
The name Sharva represents the Earth
The name Bhava stands for Water
The name Rudra is equivalent to the Divine form of the Lord in the shape of Fire
The name Ugra represents the manifestation of the Lord as Wind
The name Bhima stands for the Akasha or Ether
The name Pashupathi denotes the manifestation of the Supreme Lord as the performer of the Yajna, the Yajamana Himself
The name Mahadeva reveals His form as Soma, the Moon
The name Ishana is the epithet that reveals Him as the Soul of the Sun
Yes, the Lord Runs the Universe as a Yajna, He Himself engaging as Yajamana in the presence of Sun and the Moon and the Panchabootas.. Prithvi, Ap, Teja, Vaayu and Aakaasha.

A great quote from the great Mahakavyam Shishupalavadham of Magha..
Even the dust, when kicked by our feet raise in the air, and spread over our heads.
Such dust is great and noble when compared to people who stand immobile and listless on the face of insults showered on them..
Kicking something with feet is a sign of ultimate insult.. When dust is kicked, it raises up and it can be seen raising even above our heads.. Thus even the dust reacts and takes its revenge..
But there are people who would keep quiet and inert even on the face of the ultimate insult.. The silence may be due to fear, due to expectations, or for any other reason..
But for a dignified person, taking insult like that is too demeaning.
The poet is talking about ordinary people and men of the world.
A saint may ignore any insult.. But that is exceptional..

There will be many Gods, but they will have no qualities and powers that are expected in gods
The so called sages and saints are past-maters in deception
The common people tell lies and falsehoods as a matter of habit
Clouds gather in the sky with great intensity but they pour no water
Evil people flock together very eagerly to perpetrate all the damages they could manage
The rulers of the various localities on the face of earth all veer towards evil thoughts and actions
The people are either fallen or are already lost
The age of Kali, Kaliyuga is at its peak
These are the predictions for Kaliyuga..
Perhaps it would seem we have reached the destination.

"Belief".. the word is noble..

"Belief".. the word is noble..
it should not be mixed with sycophancy and opportunism....
the Blessed Lord Himself declared that even though He was the Supreme Being not bound by duties, He was performing the duties as a human being when He is so incarnate..
He makes it clear in Gita
Na me partha asti karthavyam thrishu lokeshu kinchana na avaaptam avaaptavyam varta eva hi karmani....
The God Himself sets such an example about work ethics..
So if belief in God would mean crass escapism, God is not likely to help...
We should turn to God when our resources have dried up and our ingenuity and dexterity will no longer carry the day for us..
And in most texts we can read one underlying principle running like a golden thread...
God is on the side of the right and He does not subscribe to the view that anything can be made right by praising God or just recruiting Him as a partner to that action..
At least this is the concept of God we can find in the majority of Scriptures of any religion worth its name..
And definitely it is foolish for anyone to switch over religions, just to get favours from God of another religion, mostly lured by glib purveyors of faith..
Because we will find the same God on the other side of the fence too...

The great poet Bharavi is highlighting the importance of the role unblemished good name and respectability and dignity in the life of a man.
He says
===========
A human being can earn and enjoy wealth
can earn more and more fame and popularity
can remain in this world as a dignified human being
only till the time his dignity and respectability in the public eyes is in tact.. and he does not fall into disrepute..
=========
A good name and dignified social status was placed even above material possessions those days in India.
Whether that is the case today.. is a question mark..???

happiness is in the mind..

happiness is in the mind..
citte prasanne bhuvanaṁ prasannaṁ citte viṣaṇṇe bhuvanaṁ viṣaṇṇam|
ato'bhilāṣo yadi te sukhe syāt cittaprasāde prathamaṁ yatasva||

the subhashitam found in many standard compilations can be translated as follows.
==============
When the mind is in a healthy, calm and pleasant state, all things around would appear to us as happy and favourable
When the mind is mired in sorrowful and depressing thoughts, the whole world around would look miserable too.
Therefore if you are interested in having a healthy happy and comfortable life, concentrated on attaining a state of mind which is ever happy and balanced..
===============
It is not exactly pep talk..
When the mind is positively oriented, even many inconveniences and challenges around would seem to be tolerable.. And a pleasant mind adds sweetness to the beauty and prosperity all around.
But when the mind is depressed, even the best things around us would fail to have any positive effect on us.. And for a person with a depressed mind, even minor challenges can bring in doom.
Of course the benefit of positive outlook is highlighted here.
Sure, mere smiles, dances and songs will not enable us to face life and win..
word analysis.
चित्ते प्रसन्ने( सति ) when the mind is calm, composed and happy भुवनं प्रसन्नं( दृश्यते ) the entire world appears to be filled with happiness
चित्ते विषण्णे (सति ) when the mind is haunted by miserable thoughts and unhappiness
भुवनं विषण्णं (दृश्यते) the world around too would look miserable.
अतः यदि ते सुखे अभिलाषः स्यात् therefore if you have desire to live a comfortable life with pleasing environs
(तर्हि )चित्तप्रसाधे प्रथमं यतस्व then concentrate your mind towards pleasing thoughts.

I found this slokam in Pundalika charitram

musings 177

One respected friend asked whether the messages going round in social media and other circles that certain slokams of Narayaneeyam when chanted would cure illnesses like blindness cancer etc.
My response is..
Guruvayurappan can do anything and bring in any miracle.
And Narayneeyam is his love.
So any part or the whole of Narayaneeyam can bless us in any manner He wants.
It is only the thought of the individual devotee that some particular slokam will bring result.
Of course that faith need not be challenged
You can be sure about the efficacy Narayaneeyam.
So many people give so many stories..about the benefits.
That may be according to their faith.
But every slokam of Narayneeyam is sacred and has curing powers..
Narayana Bhattathiri arrived and sat in the temple premises and was very ill.. unable even to move.
But when he completed this monumental work sitting there for many days he was cured of all illness.
He was blessed with ayur aroghya saukhyam..long life health and physical comfort.
Ask for anything chanting Narayaneeyam and Guruvayurappan will give that.
So we need not really worry about any part and its effect.
Every word of Narayaneeyam is a medicine.
Can there be any doubt about that..?
Guruvayurappan is the life, the hope, the cure, the solace and everything for the devotees.

Even the most improper and indecent action by a person who is having power and influence would be treated as very proper and praiseworthy by most people around.. and mostly by timeservers
For a man of lowly character making scandals and disparaging even the right actions of all is taken as the right course of action
See, for Rahu, the Amrutham or life giving Ambrosia that emerged from the milky ocean proved to be poison
And the potent venom Kaalakoota emerging from the milky ocean proved to be a worthy ornament for Lord Shiva
We know the story of the demon Rahu. When ambrosia was recovered from the milky ocean the gods just took the pot away and gave the chase to the asuras. One asura from the other side too impersonated as a deva and accompanied them. When the life giving ambrosia was being served Lord Vishnu in the shape of Mohini to all the devas Rahu was also sitting in the row waiting for his share. However the Sun and moon sitting near him spotted the mischief and indicated this fact to Mohini. Mohini acted decisively and cut off the head of Rahu before the amrutham was served. Thus amrutham that is the eternal source of life for everyone proved to be the killer poison for Rahu
Similarly, when milky ocean yielded the potent venom through the snake Vasuki, the universe faced annihilation. However Lord Shiva received the poison in his palm and swallowed it. Fearing that the poison would prove disastrous to the universe that resided in the belly of Lord, he just managed to ensure that the venon stuck to his throat and formed a black mark there as if it is an ornament. Thus the Lord was called Neelakanda and poison became an ornament for Him.
