A real hero relies first on his valour and inherent inner energy rather than the aids and resources he could muster externally .
The sloka below from samayochitapadyamalika describe a hero of such exemplary stature.. Sri Rama Himself..
The terrain to be defeated is the heavily protected Lanka
The ocean had to be crossed on foot
The leader of the enemy force appearing in the battlefilled is the redoubtable son of Pulustya.. Ravana himself
The people in his(Rama's ) own side to fight the battle are just monkeys
In spite of all this, Rama vanquished the entire clan of rakshasas almost single handedly
For a great man,the expected results of a mission .. and its successful implementation depends more on his personal capacity and determination rather than on weapons, resources and aids available exterrnally..
++++++++++++++
Yes, with a solid character backing a person solidly, success is almost his..
The lack of resources may not have much impact. But if there is no steely determination for making it great, no amount fo resources can really give success or retain such success..
We have seen too many Davids defeating Goliaths..
This is not to say that we should neglect resource mobilization..
But what is outside us is never really in our control.
So we have our limitations there..
But our head, hands and shoulders are our own..
Our character and knowledge are our own..
Why should we hesitate to use such faculties in the best way?

grain and chaff

A very significant quote from the epic Mahabharatam
A man who is interested in gaining knowledge and expertise in any field should, after learning those from books, should retain only the core ideas and the meaning just as a person who is desirous of winning grain that gas grown as a crop in the field should discard husk and straw coming along with the grain thoroughly and completely..
The knowledge available in the books and in the open world is huge..
We acquire such knowledge by reading and intelligent observation, or even from the lessons life gives us..
But the core knowledge is significant, because that can make our lives richer..
Memorizing books or remembering and crying over past scars and hurts would be of little use.. Our memory and life span both are limited.. So we should not clutter them with fluffs..
I cannot help laughing aloud seeing scholars fighting over bibliography and authenticity of sources for quotes.. But then scholars are just scholars..
ज्ञानविज्ञान तत्परः who is interested in, who is keen about knowledge and expertiseमेधावी (नरः) intelligent manग्रन्थान् अभ्यस्य after learning from booksधान्यार्थी one who wants grainपलालं इव like husk, straw( अर्थात् अन्यं ) apart from meaning, core ideaसर्वं everythingअशेषतः without leaving any traceत्यजेत् should give up, should discard ( from memory)

हंसः क्षीरमिवांभसः

प्राज्ञोऽपि जल्पतां पुंसां श्रुत्वा वाचः शुभाशुभाः।

A person with enlightenment and wisdom would patiently hear the words and opinions uttered or expressed by all men, whether such utterances are nice or not so nice, but would take into account for guidance and action only the good things..
It is like the swan, drinking a mixture of water and milk, but taking in only the milk content would just reject all the extra water..
The same imagery of the swan - milk-water has been used by Kalidass in his Abhijnanashakuntalam..
हंसो हि क्षीरं आदत्ते तन् मिश्रा वर्जयत्यपः..
hamso hi ksheeram aadatte tan mishraa varjayatyapaH.
The swan swallows the milk but rejects the water mixed with it..
Yes, our eyes, ears and mind are all created by the good god to received all sorts of signals.. without evaluating their merits..
But then an additional faculty .. called intellect or discretion too is give by that same God..
We have to use our discretion..
Else, we will reach nowhere..

Another down to earth thought reflected in an ancient saying.
===========
The following things or persons who are by nature crooked cannot ever be straightened up by any means, be it medicines, mantrams or spells..
The minds and activities of evil fellows
The tail of a dog
The body of a snake
The hump at the back of a camel..
===============
Of course we can add a few more items to the list.. But it is not correct to exceed the brief.. provided by an ancient poet..
Of course, the canine tail, serpentine anatomy or camels beauty would hardly affect us in real terms, but the crookedness of some fellows create havoc for all..

do not try to swallow a mountain

It is, is it (?) best for anyone to restrict his field of study to some little part of his existence representing a small scoop from the huge mountain of materials piled up before him..
But the choice is not easy.. When one starts to observe and study, many references, many indicators of earlier studies come to surface, and one is tempted to be held up in study of nuances..
This happens with every true lover of art and literature..
A singer may be held up by one ragam.. and he may linger around it without having the heart to proceed further... without getting the best out of the small things..
Of course, deep study and penance over some particular aspect leads to birth of beauty beyond imagination.. but then the world is too huge, the fields are too wide, and one may get buried for ever if he lingers around some small area...
No one can ever be sure whether deep study around and single nucleus with scope to expand in radial lines from there is the right approach
or whether it is right to read, study, and imbibe things in a global manner.. covering more and more ground, rather than staying put on any particular issue..
The dichotomy will continue..
To dither or not to dither.. that too is a dilemma..

subhāṣitamañjarī 8-229
another very sane advice found in Subhashita manjari
==============
It would do good to us if we avoid meeting people who are adamant and idiotic
If such meeting cannot be avoided, it would be better not to remain standing in their company
If one is forced to stand in the company of an idiotic and admant person, conversation with him should be avoided
And if one lands up in a situation where the conversation with an idiot cannot be avoided, then that conversation should be kept at the level befitting such an idiot.
================
The poet has foreseen every situation..
It is best not to meet with an idiot.. but in the open world it is very difficult.. because we encounter such persons dime a doze.
Again the next filter.. Even if an idiot comes near us, we can avoid remaining in his company for any considerable time.
Of course if we are forced to be in that esteemed company for some time, then a conversation with that fellow can be avoided..
And if we are compelled by circumstances to exchange a few words with such a great personage, it is always better to remember the level of listener and use our mind and words accordingly..
A good lesson for all times.. and especially in the "free for all" social media..

It would be good to remember this
If we throw up dust against the shining sun, those dust particles will comedown and fall on our eyes alone and would obliterate our vision and give irritation too..
Just like that if we throw insult at noble and wise people, such slighting will not affect them but would return to us in full measure..
The brilliance of the sun is not going to be affected by any amount of dust thrown at it from the earh..
Similarly, if we throw scandals at great people out of intolerance, jealousy or ignorance, such scandals woul not affect them.. But such activity would definitely make us look silly
( We talk of the dogs barking looking up at the sun..)
It is a fact..
But do we learn our lessons?

definition of thought either as positive or negative is subjective

The definition of thought either as positive or negative is subjective.. A positive thought for the Individual may prove to be negative for the society.. So this is only at best the first step.. As shankara said.. from satasanga (company of exalted minds) comes nissanga(lack of excessive desire), nissanga brings in nirmoha(complete absence of attachment ) and nirmoha leads to the nishchala tattwa or steadiness or immobility of mind and from nishchala tattwa come the emancipation or jeevanmukthi..
Some opine that this transformation comes through bhakthi, some say it can come from Gnana, some subscribe to the path of Raja yoga and some are votaries of Karma yoga.. Anyway Yoga goes a step further..
For the realized, thoughtless thought will not fill the space vacated by conscious thought, but the mind can enjoy itself in a thoughtless stage too..
This is Chittavritti nirodha at its peak..
A thought can be positive or negative with reference to one another. There is always a comparison with each other.
But a state of absence of thought.. it cannot yield to any negativity..
This is my food for thought..

I have come to surrender myself to lord Raghava.. Please convey to the Lord that I am here seeking the protection who is the ultimate source of succour to the whole world ,,
Rama is surrounded by all his advisers and kinsmen like Lakshmana, Sugriva, Aanjaneyaswamy, Jambavaan, Angada etc..
When the question of giving shelter to Vibheeshana is taken up for discussion, all the aides, with the exception of Anjaneyaswamy are suspicious of the Intentions of the younger brother of the Demon King and they suggest that Vibhishana should be driven away and at any cost he should not be granted refuge..
The Lord of Lords, the Majestic Emeperor Sri Ramachandra makes the following declaration..
"For the one who has come to me just once for refuge and who is entreating and begging before me that he is mine, I have to grant succour and protection..
The sole vow of my life is that I shall grant protection and relief from fear to all beings."
That precisely is our Emperor Lord Ramachandra for us

A quote from Samayochitapadyamalika.. a very popular compilaton of wise sayings..
We should not take things for granted.. Even when we feel very sure and secure and safe about the presence and utilitiy of certain things, many such things would be of use when we continue to be very alert and caring in matters concerning them..
Even if we have studied science throughly and threadbare, and we have applied a lot of thought on the subject, we have to think and learn continously..
Even if we are very loyal and utterly subservient to our king or the State, we have to renew our resolve and serve the king or state every day with visible enthusiam.
And if a girl loves me and she occupies my lap all the time, still I have to watch her.. Her attention can stray.. Others may cast their eyes on her and ever snatch her away forcibly. Whatever it may be, even the most devoted love can be lost, unless we watch and care and guard our love evey moment..
There is no chance of permanent attraction and comfortable possession of the knowledge of Science, the fovours of the King or the love of a woman..
These can be lost at any moment.. if one relaxes his vigil..

there can be dynamic quiet, static quiet and absolute or dead quiet too..

there can be dynamic quiet, static quiet and absolute or dead quiet too..
By usual means like meditation we reach a state of quietness for some few seconds, and we would be pushed back to the mundane and ordinary thoughts almost immediately, just like a stone or something attached to an elastic string when suddenly stretched can hit a target and remain there for few seconds and then return back to the original state..
The static quiet is where we reach the quietness but we are in some vague way conscious of our original state and could return to normalcy after some time with our own control..
This is like a ball attached to the far end of a sting and just placed on a target with the other end held by our fingers.. The ball will return to the original state once we pull the string towards us or away from the target..
The dead quiet can come only when we are dead.. Like just throwing a stone away once for all..
The second state is what we find in yogis.. the Samadhi etc..
But there is always a risk that one may use the hold,, and if he remains in that state of Samadhi for infinite time period it may almost mean death for the physical body..
Some can, it is believed attain even end of life this way.. what we allude as leaving the body by yoga agni etc,,
what Sati the Dakshayani did..
But then what I have dealt with as three stages might be classified by seers and teachers into many more sub groups..
However whatever may be the quiet we attain other than when we lose complete control are only relative.. they cannot be absolute..

Life has a rhythm.. Nature too has a way of slow and steady change or transformation.. the change is so subtle that we could see the change taking place but could never spot the moment when the change actually occurred.. That is the beauty.
In our personal lives too things have to happen slowly and steadily.. And normally they happen at their own sweet pace.. But most of us have a tendency to try to speed up some pleasant matters and slow down some things which are just ordinary or not so pleasant but are obligatory..
==============
Here in the above slokam, five situations or activities in life that can be proceeded only at a slow pace are enumerated..
1. One should proceed with a journey slowly.
2. The weaving of clothes should be slow
3 Climbing of mountain peaks.. demands slow and meticulous care
4, Acquiring of knowledge.. that has to be a step by step process ..
5. Earning of wealth.. sudden riches are sureshot invitation for danger..
================
We are witnessing the dangers of rash driving, deaths, accidents, and so on
If clothes are woven too fast, the weft and the warp get entangled.. and the beauty and utility of the cloth is lost.. Indians were famous in that craft.. the Muslins of Dacca before the British ruined them is an example..
We can negotialte mountains only very slowly.. A wrong step ahead can mean fall into abysses and sure death
A student has to proceed from play school or kindergarten to a post doctoral degree.. only through a penance spread through years.. Is there any other way?
And sudden affluence is an invitation to tax raids.. and many other risks too..

One can attract various types of people by different means
The stingy fellow would fall for money, be it gift, bribe or anything
The angry man would cool downbook of a if we just become submissive and approach him with folded hands
The arrogant, deceited and idiotic person can be brought into good books by just giving an impression to him that we are obeying and following his whims in utter obedience
and
The good and the noble will make beelines to us if our deeds are virtuous and praiseworthy..

Again a great lifestyle lesson in a nutshell.. covering most of the management and lifestyle lessons that could be seen in any
text or curriculum of any age..

Another very wise observation found in the anthology of Subhashitam.. called Sabhaaranjan Shatakam..
The meaning and sense of many subjects, would be impossible to be understood by people if they are just formally taught as Shastras ( as techinical subjects)
But when great poets explain the same subjects in their lucid and yet beautiful style, the ideas become clear to the reader.
The gems like Manikyam are found in the hood of a cruel snake.. When they are found there, they evoke only terror in us.
But the same gem, when extracted from the venomous creatures and are placed in our hands, we see them and enjoy their beauty and shine..
The function of a poet is to present things in such a way that the reader understands what is conveyed, and at the same time the readers mind and spirit are held captive by the words, cadence and music of the creation..

Was reading a book and copying the slokam to my journal.. Found it too beautiful so that I could not help sharing.

distinctive feature of culture and refinedment..

------------
The following qualities are considered to be the distinctive features of culture and refinedment..
1. The capacity to realize ones own place in life.. without trying either to exaggerate or to trivialize.
2..The capacity to understand with accuracy what is going on in the minds of other people and to adjust accordingingly.
3. Capacity to maintain pleasant attitude even under upsetting conditions.
4.. Capacity to remain steady and steadfact ever
5. Capacity to control ones own selfishness.
6 Harmonious attitude which would enable one to evaluate situations on merits on the basis of the situation on hand and not on the basis of the persons involved.
From the text Nityaneeti
---------------
Of course, if we cover the entire gamut of the above six requirements, we would have become too good and great..

The story of Vamana and Mahabali as Visvamitra tells Rama and Lakshmana In Valmiki Ramayanam.. Sargam 29 of Balakandam of Valmikiramayanam Part 2 The Incarnation as Thrivikrama..

The story of Vamana and Mahabali as Visvamitra tells Rama and Lakshmana
In Valmiki Ramayanam..
Sargam 29 of Balakandam of Valmikiramayanam
Part 2 The Incarnation as Thrivikrama..
---------------------------------------------------
Continued from last post..
link https://kanfusion.blogspot.com/2022/09/the-story-of-vamana-and-mahabali-as.html
-----------------------------------
Lord Vishnu who had assumed the form of the dwarfish mendicant Vamana, left his abode and Sidhasram and traversing across India, reached the banks of Narmada where Mahabali was performing a Yajna.
He arrived the hallowed ground where the Yajna was being performed.
There Vamana, the Lord Hari himself told Bali..
“ May all welfare visit you, great King. This Yajna is really praiseworthy. “
He went on..
"Oh King, we heard about the great Yajna being conducted by you, and also knew that bounteous gifts would be offered in the course of the function, and desiring such presents, we have arrived the grounds of your Yajna."
Hearing the words of Vamana, the King bali replied.
“Oh young Sage, the purpose of my life has been fulfilled today. The results for all may penance done during my life has come to fruition. My Kingdom has attained the ultimate blessings during its existence today. The fruits of all my good deeds are realized this day. This Yajna of mine has realized its pupose.. I have realized the ultimate effect of all my good deeds.. For you have come here to this yajna bhoomi seeking gifts and presents.
I am offering unto you with all my heart all that is in my possession.
My treasury with all cash and gems, all the ornament, all the grains available in the granaries of this kingdom, the village(s), the town(s), this country of mine itself, all vehicles, all my army with elephants, horses, chariots and artillery , I offer all these to you.. All my other earnings and possessions too are at your disposal.
Oh Sinless one, I shall gift unto you whatever that you desire”
The boy Vamana smiled a little when Bali made the above offer and replied the king who was doing yajna there.
“What use would I have for the things you have offered to me, oh Great King.. Oh, you generous one, Please give me just a piece of land which could be measured by the extent of three feet of mine.
The great Asura King, when he heard about that demand by the tiny dwarf laughed to himself and relplied.. “ Oh Sage, you are the personification of Brahma power itself, I shall fulfil your desire and do whatever you direct me. “
The King took the decision to gift the area of land as desired by the tiny brahamachari Vamana.
The preceptor of the clan of Asuras and the priest of the king, Sukraacharya, understood what was going on in the mind of Bali, called him aside, and warned him against making such gift.
He told the king,
“ That Vishnu of infinite strength and grace, whom even Brahmadeva, Shiva, Indra, Yogins, Gods and Demons could not really know, that great Divine being is present here in the disguise of a dwarfish child. “
The great Garuda the son of Vinata, who was watching the conversation between Bali and Sukrachraya and also the reluctance of Shukra, pushed the priest aside and gave him a thorough thrashing..
(The protest of Sukra is mentioned in other Puranas too. But elsewhere it is said that Sukra tried to prevent the gift to the dwarf by entering the waterpot of Bali and preventing water being flown as a token of gift, but the boy Vamana pried the mouth of the pot with a sharp darbha and Sukra’s eye was pierced and he jumped out in pain)
However, Mahabali, in consultation with his wife, decided to proceed with the gift..
He thought
“ If the Ultimate Lord Himself has come before me asking for a gift during this Yajna, that itself is the ultimate benefit and fulfilment for this Yajna.. May it be that way..”
Thinking so, bali poured water out of his waterpot at the outstreched hands of that blessed Soul Vamana in token of the gift being confirmed.
He told Vamana.. “ Blessed Lord, please receive from me the area of land which is to be measured by your three feet”
As Lord Hari the Vamana touched the water offered by Mahabali, he manifested Himself in the Universal form visvaroopa and grew into a form which filled the whole three words.. And his hands and the weapons worn filled all the space above the universe and also all the space in the three worlds.
Seeing that the dward of a boy had just grown and occupied the whole universe with his own form, Bali was shocked and surprised. But he knew immediately that it was Lord Vishnu the Madhava Himself, and therefore offered the Lord all the honours befitting his exalted state.
Thus worshipped by Bali, Lord Hari, keeping in mind the welfare of the whole universe with all its occupants, received the entire three worlds from Bali as gift, being measured by just three feet of the Lord.
Lord Vamana the Hari, restored the three worlds to Shakra, the Indra.
And after serving the purpose of his incarnation, Lord Vamana took the Sidha Ashrama as his abode for peaceful living for some time..
Visvamitra tells Rama that he is a devotee of that Vamana and out of reverence for that Lord, he was staying in the same Sidha Ashramam..
Notes
It is mentioned according to the description in Srimad Bhagavatham that after Lord Hari assumed his universal form, there was not sufficient space to be measured by the three feet of Thrivikrama, and hence the third foot was placed on the head of Bali..
It is also mentioned that a battle occurred, and Bali was bound by a rope provided by Varuna and sent to Sutala, a netherworld and released there..
Note 2 Vamana Puranam mentions that as the recompense for the gift of three worlds given by Bali to the Lord, the sacrificial shares when offerings are made to Pithrus in Shradhaam go to Bali.. At the close of Vaivasvatha manvantaram, Bali is expected to return to the earth and rule here as the Manu for the next Manvantaram..
Note 3 People of Kerala believe that Bali was so dear to his subjects and He too loved his subjects of Kerala so much, that he requested the Lord Vamana that he be permitted to visit his subjects one day a year.. on the Thriuvonam day of Chingam month.. We Keralite celebrate the arrival of Mahabali with ten days celebrations culminating on that ONAM day..
