A very wise statement by the great Poet Banabhatta in his legendary Gadhyakaavyam.. Kaadambari..
================
The irrepressible and quirky minded goddess of wealth Lakshmi can convert even a man
who is learned,
who is sensitive and kind,
who is very strong physically and mentally,
who is high born,
who is very bold and steadfast
and
who is industrious
into a bad, evil minded and wayward person
===================
Lakshmi is the Goddess who makes one affluent.. Possession of wealth often makes one drunk with arrogance, and easy money makes him a spendthrift and pleasure loving, and makes him prone to all bad habits and bad company too which is easy to acquire when on has easy money to throw around
Of course, if one has money and he would spend it for his own good and the welfare of others, that would be nice..
But that does not happen very often..

A very realistic traditional sanskrit couplet
If,the pronouncement of proper law given by Lord Parameshwara himself is quoted at the worng place and at the wrong time ti may become ineffective and useless.
Even a blabbering by an idiot, if it would suit the occasion would become appropriate and effective too..
Timing is very important..
The target audience is also of great relevance..
Good words, good advice given to an unruly mob or to a set of senseless people would never have any effect..

the most distressing and painful situations for men in their lives are the following three
Death of wife when one is aged
Own money being given to relatives for safe custody or as loan
Dependence on others for daily meals
Death of wife is obviously the most painful thing that can happen to a man.. A man is just helpless, even though he may pretend otherwise, if his wife is gone.. And the dependence becomes more and more inevitable as he gets older.. The ladies are perhaps better in this matter.. They may adjust or fight with childrens, children in law and all and somehow carry on.. But an old man is just dead the moment his wife is gone..
If we are reasonably affluent, we tend to entrust some of our money and assets with our relatives, be it own children, siblings or even friends.. But sooner or later we would realize that our money and wealth are our own only if they are in our absolute control.. and in the most liquid form.. Any sort of handing over to others, hampers the optimum utility of our own money when it is reallly required.. And when we ask back we gain enmity too..
And depending on others for food even if we pay for it, can make us miserable.. Perhaps the only persons we can deman food from at any time are our mother and the wife.. Mother would depart much earlier than us.. And the distress of losing the wife has already been pointed out earlier..
These are clear sources of sorrow.. But it is not in our hands to avoid any on the three situations.. Only God can save us..

A person wounded by arrows would recover from the wound in due course... A plant or tree whose branches are chopped by a sword would sprout fresh branches and live on ..
But bad and repugnant words cause wounds which would never allow the victim to recover.. The damage caused by bad words is permanent..

When there are many pending actions, one should try to perform the task which is the most important and which is of greater utility for many people..
This is an advice from Chanakya, in his monumental treatise the Chanakyasootra..
Looks so simple and the reader may say, it is so elementary..
and we may think we follow this dictum almost universally..
But it is really not so.. We dither, we procrastinate.
Life is complex.. We are exposed to so many tasks..
Our tendency would be to work on easy tasks on hand ..
But sure, there will be more difficult and complex tasks too and tackling them alone would carry our lives ahead..
So, whether we like it or not we will have to prioritise and finish off complex tasks too....
There are no easy ways out all the time..
The only way to exist and thrive is to enter the field and work.. And work really hard at that..

A quote from poet and scholar Kshemendra
People who are of noble conduct never attempt to enter into conversation with
a person who is conceited.. that is thinks too much of himself
a person who is not responsive to normal conversation
a person who has fallen from a state of propriety
a person who would respond only with nasty retorts and unpleasant things
a person who is excessively bowed down and depressed by incidence of sorrow or insult
In short, dialogue can be effective only with a person who would sensibly respond and keep his manners..
Perhaps social media is an exception..

The relation between the maker and his creation can be very simple, or the most complicated as the created being makes it out for itself..

There is absolutely no confusion on the part of the maker. In fact what we see in our God is just our own reflection .
The supreme being, it would appear, is just a plane mirror, with the only difference that the image is not having lateral inversion..
The simple belief that He has sent us to this earth with a purpose known to Him alone and that we are just moving along the path illuminated by Him.. is the easiest and the best.
From this simple article of faith, we can, if we choose, make the relation more and more complex..
We first complicate the issue by trying to superimpose our whims and fancies over His exalted will and wisdom..
We go further to expect that He should run our lives as we wish and this is something which cannot make any sense..
Just think if each constituent of the universe is acting or is expecting the maker to act according to their own wishes!
There can be only chaos, and God is not there to create chaos and destroy his own sweet creation..
Further we go and start comparing our relation with Him with that of another being with God..
This complicates the issue further.
A parent loves all his children equally, as a rule..
So why should the children compare the depth of His love and make life complicated?
Then the relationship becomes most complicated when the being created by Him starts to barter and negotiate with Him, saying that he will offer this or that to the Maker in return to any favour shown..
In the first place, all that is with the creation belong to the Maker, and what is there to barter or give as a prize?
Faith in Him with no expectations and no challenges is the best way of connection we can make with Him.
But we are living mostly with an illusion of self importance..

a great quote from Rigvedam.. it implies that even persons or things originating from the very same source may not be equally good or beneficial in their attributes and achievements.. So doing favour or disfavour by comparing their status is prohibited. There should be no discrimination among donees while we are making gifts or offering benefits.
==========
The meaning of the mantram is
Every man is born with two hands.. But when it comes to action the two hands act with varied efficiencies.
The same mother or foster mother might be feeding two children.. but the quality and quantity of such nurturing cannot be exactly same..
( Some also interpret this line as indicating two cows from the same mother cow.. giving different quantity of milk)
Even two siblings born as twins never possess or grow up having the same physical strength
Therefore people, friends and relatives of the same origin or clan may not all be equal.. But the consideration while making gifts or assistance to them should not vary for that reason..
We should not discriminate just because all in group have not equally attainment..
============
The idea of egalitarianism with a human face..
It is heartening to find that idea embedded in our first Veda.. the Rig Veda.. whose composition is traced back to ten millenniums by some scholars and not later than five millinniums by others.

A very basic statement of ethics.
Even if one uses his whole wealth aquired and accumulated through unfair an unjust means,
He can never gain fame and welfare in this world
and
He will lhave no virtues of punyams to keep his company when he goes to the nether world after his death..
Yes, our way of life always stresses on the proper path to reach the proper destination..
Of course we read stories of Robin Hood or Kayamkulam Kochunni.. the thugs and robbers who are potrayed as doing good to the weak and meek using the assets they pllundered..
Those stories are very nice to read.. First because, the tendency to be off the strict and straight forward is a kink in almost all persons.. Secondly when one has money and when he is prepared to throw a few crumbs around, he becomes accepted by all around..
Of course, we can understand life only to a certain lever.. Beyond that we place ourselves at the disposal of some being whom we presums and even define as the embodiment of truth, fairness, mercy and all that is good..
And we are often taught the lesson by that unseen entity that material advantage might add to our comforts when things are just moving on calmly, crises are waiting at every corner, and such crises could be overcome only of there is some divine interference.. And no quantity of money can give us comfort at such situations..
I think the idea of fairplay in life and its activities.. is to be accepted without pondering over the logic for it..

Another nugget of wisdom.. and grace
===============
One who persists with reading, and writing, one who observes things around him with due diligence, one who never hesitates to ask learned people questions with due respect
his intellect just expands just like the petal of the lotus flower when they get exposed to the rays of the Sun..
===============
It would look as if it is a homily.. But in a small couplet a huge power pack of wisdom is loaded.. That is the beauty of Sanskrit and Indian wisdom..
Of course, we must set our priorities rightly..
Reading can be just mugging up anything.. Even sensational and pornographic material can be read by many.. They will cause only doom..except for those who produce such trash commercially. The process of reading involves the process of the right material for reading too..
writing too can be mechanical or intelligent..
Seeing... The good Lord has given us two eyes enabling us to see almost anything around us.. beautiful or ugly, bright or dark, pleasant or disgusting.. So seeing is not merely focussing our eyes on something and getting images formed on our retina..One who can readily segregate what he sees into relevant, irrelevant and evil.. really sees.
And asking questions.. first the questions should come from our thirst for knowledge.. and the questions should be directed towards the proper target.. the really learned and noble teacher.. We can harm ourselves through selection of bad quetions and adoption of the wrong attitude.. and if we get the answers from the wrong person, or in the wrong way.. There again diligence is the watchword.
And speaking, seeing, hearing.. all these actually involve all our sense organs and functional organs and the mind-spirit core inside us too..

A very practical statement.. a nugget of realism
As long a a person has something to be gained from the society or the world at large, he would declare his faithfulness and even would wait for the pleasure of others.. But once his purpose is served, he can show his true colours..
When one has to cross a river, he is very much attached to a boat that would ferry him across.. But once the other bank is reached, he will have no use for the boat..
Remembering the path travelled and feeling gratitude are nice qualities.. but they come only when we cultivate . But our natural propensities are not that noble..
In Malayalam there is a popular saying
Paalam katakkuvolam naaraayanaa paalam katannaal kooraayan
A fellow has to cross a narrow bridge with a spate of water undeneath.. He hesitantly steps on the bridge and takes every step along uttering with great devotion the name of Lord Narayana..
But after he has stepped out of the bridge on the other side, and has placed his feet on firm grounds, he looks back and shouts with scant respect.. " Kooraayana" ( just to indicate that he cares a damn for the protector deity-- now that his purpose is served)
It is not exaggeration.. Basically we are like that..
Philanthropy is more on paper and microphone that in real life..
This lesson should be learned more by those who have served all their lives and are tempted to expect some help from those whom they helped..

A quote from Manusmriti
The people who think themselves to be modern and secular make it a point always to curse whatever that is said by Manu, the greatest lawmaker of India.
Our Dharmashastras... we have many of them .. pronounced by many sages.. some two hundred and odd as discovered till date.. all follow the manusmriti.. Manusmriti is the last word on law, as long as there is no conflict with Vedas.. and obviously what we find in Manusmriti is never at loggerhead with Vedas..
The quote above, I presume is to be accepted universally, by all, whether Hindus or Atheists.. They just touch upon the core of our existence..
--------------
Meaning of the slokas.
----------------
The preceptor of Guru is equal to Brahma the creator himself
Our own father is equal to the primordial patriarch.. the Prajapati.. from whom all human kind was born
Our own mother is equal to mother earth herself.
Our own brother is equal to our own self..
The sufferings undergone by our mother and father to give us birth and nurture us, cannot be compensated even if we serve them with devotion for hundred years.
So all human beings should conduct themselves in such a way that the parents are always please..
The same duty is to be discharged in respect to the preceptor, the teacher, the acharya too.
All our penance, endeavours, and actions would be effective and worthy only if these three are ever happy..
Our life and penance have meaning only then.
Faithful service to the parents and the preceptor is considered as the most supreme penance.
That is the primary Dharma
And if we are to act in pursuance of any other dhrama, that should be done only after getting the clear and definity consent from the three... the mother, father and the preceptor
Some may say this is too melodramatic.
But this was the enforceable law in India.. when Sanatana Dharma was at its glorious reign..

In this subhashitam, six character traits are enumerated as roadblocks to acquisition of knowledge.
1.. Learning just for pleasure, without trying to understand the subject in its proper seriousness
2.. Learning keeping in mind just the profits and gains and benefits that would arise from such study.
3.. Allowing the learning process to be affected by romance and such distracting pastimes
4. Tendency to consume and enjoy.. and make merry.. in preferece to the learning process
5. Arrogance.. tendency to assume that one knows everything.. and all others are never upto ones own standard
6... Laziness.. finding excuses not to pursue.. trying to discover shortcuts.. tendency to learn with minimum effort..
Of course, every learner if attacked by these bugs to some extent .. But then the learning process is a stiff fight against such deterrents..

+++++++++++++++
a very challenging poser to our sense of great might and physical capability.. found in a matter of fact subhAshitam..
The imposing ant hill is created and built by tiny termites, using trifling specks of sand, soil and clay, carried in too small quantities at a time, but all the time.
Here the reason for such creation is not really physical strengtht, but it is the perseverence and untiring effort without giving up..
+++++++++++++++++
A great lesson indeed.
A credit balance of strength or power may give a nice start for any project..
But only if the constituents and workers sweat it day in and day out, the project can be completed..
Work, more work, and work again.. and work till the task is finished..
That only makes sense
May be one can rest a little..
and then start working on the next task.. and puruse again
For work is worship..
Work is life..
Lack of work is just death and decay..
The wage for the work is the capacity to work itself.
Work is a weapon which gets sharper and sharper as we work..
But then the trick lies in efficent channelizing..
Have a nice day filled with work..

it all depends on what you mean by happiness

it all depends on what you mean by happiness..
Happiness a cliche.. It is happiness for a snake to eat a frog.. but for the frog ?
I am reminded of the tantrums of a vagrant person who came to the backyard of the kitchen of a rich household , where a feast was in the making..
The man saw a bunch of plantain fruits suspended from the ceiling..
He hovered around scratching his head and praying to himself that the cook might give him two plantains..
The cook saw him and asked why the fellow was loitering around.
Shy by nature, the man replied,
" I would be happy to have a little fire"..
The cook just picked out a burning log and handed it over to the expectant wanderer..
Suddenly, the latter got angry glowered at the cook and shouted,
"เด‡เดš്เดšിเดฐി เดคീ เดŽเดจ്เดจ് เดชเดฑเดž്เดžാเดฒ്‍ เดฐเดฃ്เดŸു เดชเดฏം. เด‡เดคเดฑിเดฏിเดฒ്เดฒേ?"..
"Don't you know that I meant two plantains, when I asked for a little fire?''..
This is what happens.. we just think and define something according to our wishes and limited perceptions and assume and expect that others also understand and interpret in the same way..
it is not possible..

Another sane advice from our elders
The following three things are better if they are not done, rather than being done
1. Study of a language without proper training in grammar
2. Travel and attempt to cross a huge ocean or river in a leaking or broken boat
3 Taking medicine without following the rules of diet prescribed by the physician
Yes, we need not experiment with situations and ideas which are doomed to bring us disaster only.. and we can know that even without much thought..

Oh Lord of Fate, Brahma! you prescribe any suffering for me according to your wishes. I have no complaints. I shall put up with them without any grumble.
But please spare me from the ordeal of discussing great works of art and literature in the company of disinterested persons..( Please do not write a decree to that effect on my head)
It is believed that Brahmadeva or Vidhi maintains the debits and credits of our deeds and as and when we die and are born again, the accounts are recorded in our scalps ( I do not know whether some people are created with bald pate so that the accounts can be read easily.)
The accounts of Fate are strict and accurate. So the poet is ready to accept the accounts without any appeals or requests for condonation..
But all said and done, being forced to discuss great poetry and literature with a moron is worse than death itself for a person who loves the Muses..Hence the prayer..

A very valid advise.
===========
Having close connection and contacts with ones own relatives, even if they are of no use or benefit whatsoever, is for our own good..
The paddy or rice, can germinate and grow to give further crop only as long as it is not separated from the husk..
=============
The husk, by itself, when removed from paddy is of little utility.. But once the paddy is dehusked, it loses its capacity to sprout and germinate..
The sloka underlines the fact that no individual can survive and grow in an isolated world of his own.. The surroundings, environments and the people around would have their own positive and negative qualities.. But one has to live with them.. and grow with them..
To think that the exalted self is more important that others and that he could survice all by himself is just illusion..

musings 158

I was suggesting that when some piece of writing is really good and touching, we tend to get attacted to that piece so much that we lose sight of the author, and the craft of writing hardly engages out mind at that point..

Some friends seem to interpret my view as obliterating the identify of the author..
That was not the idea at all..
From time immemorial, every author ensured that his authentic signature is embedded in his work..
In fact that is the law of nature..
Even god marks his signature on his creations..
My discussion was about the quality of working..
The replies to my posts was educative .. People read things and interpret them not exactly in the way the author intended but just the way they want.. Some find things which are not at all there in the subject matter..
We are helpless..
The world is what it is.. and not what we want it to be..
My response on the issue .. in a thread..
"In the long run, the author will be noted and his name will become immortal..
My post was not at all in that context..
I wanted to stress the point that when we are really enjoying something, the object of enjoyment fillls us with so much of thrill and even contentment that we forget to note the role of the creator..
Of course, if a great work is to be catelogued, the identity of its author, the comparative merits of the creation with reference to similar other creations and the distinctive features of the work are to be remembered and recorded too precisely..
I was just thinking over a situation like eating a delicious food item..
We will first savour the taste..
Of course later on we will ask about the cook and even collect the recipe too..
A thing of beauty is a joy for ever..
First we try to enjoy the beauty..
There are so many beautiful flowers.. so pleasing..
We are overwhelmed with the presence of such beauty..
But do we think of God always.. after all God created them
A singer performing nicely may be conscious of himself..
But the listeners are more conscious of the music..
The listeners accept the identity of the singer only because they expect the same musical notes emanating from him later too..
Recently I happened to read an anecdote about the divine poet Kannadasan..This happened when he was attending the inaugural function of an arts forum in a college..
As a starter to the function, a young poet read out a piece of fine poetry.
The youngster was an up coming poet, too..
Later on Kannadasan too read out another piece of poetry.
The acceptance to the starter was lukewarm whereas Kannadasan received standing ovations and calls for encore.. for his presentation..
The Kannadasan later revealed to the audience that the poetry read by the starter was written by Kannadasan and the poetry recited by Kannadasan himself that day was actually the creation of the young poet who had presented a poem early..
So the audience here was carried away by the name of Kannadasan..
This is what is happenig in so many of the so called sadas and sabhas too..
Yes, I admit, talent too comes to the limelight sooner or later..
But originality is not always welcomed..
Of course, literary researchers have often detected the authorship of great works, if not mentioned, from the style and vocabulary applied by the author..
Each author has a distinctive address.. or mudra..
But it takes a lot of erudition to detect or identify such mudras..
If someone says there are mudras because he has seen such a thing mentioned by someone else, .. okey.. that is just a show off.."

A person who does not abandon his own inherent noble character and stature even when he faces great dangers, is the one who is the really accomplished and great one.

Yes, there is only one life and just one death for anyone who is born..
The way he would like to live and even to end his life can be chosen by him..
Of course it is his own choice to live a wretched, worthless life, and pass into oblivion.
The choice to live an exemplay life is also with him.

The benediction of Kausalya...
-------------------------------------
This is a very poignant description from the Ayodhya Kandam of Srimad Valmiki Ramayanam..
Usually, a mother showers her blessings on her child when there is something very happy and beneficial that is happening ..
But here, Rama's proposed pattaabhishekam is interrupted by the demand of two boons from Dasharatha by Kaikeyi..
Rama is about to proceed for his life in Forest for fourteen years.. And Lakshman and Sita too are accompanying him.
Rama is visiting Kausalya to bid her adieu..
She tells him

I think no mothers would venture to offer such blessings on the occasion when the son is leaving all the prosperity, fine life, and his parents too to live in a forest..
But Kausalya was not an ordinary mother..
She knew what glory was in store for her son.. during his sojourn in forest..
I offer my Pranams and offer my best wishes and prayers and wishes to those beings of Divinity.. Sri Rama with Sitadevi, Lakshmana and Anjaneya..
