About the legend of Kerala –Maveli and Onam
I am attempting to trace historical and sociological possibilities. I am not attemping to present nor to support any theories. There is a local legend about a great ruler of Kerala, and his name is Maveli, a variant of the benevolent emperor Mahabali.
All people of Kerala from Layman to the learned have been singing with gusto and nostalgia for millenniums until this Onam about “മാവേലി നാടു വാണീടും കാലം, മാനുഷരെല്ലാരും ഒന്നുപോലെ” and the same refrains might reverberate our cultural horizons for even centuries to come.
Sometimes, just to forget everything mundane and often distressing, we have to live in some utopia, some imaginary ideal environs at least for a very tiny slice of time. The festivals and festivities like Onam have taken shape from this acute awareness.
Any festival among any set of people having varied having living conditions, are celebrated just to throw to winds all tension and enjoy life..
The frills, legends, ballads and theories are all simply appendages.
