What to do with such people?

A highly respected, erudite and very pious and absolutely honoured friend for me was listing some possible methods by which the discussion in social media can be conducted in the most affable manner with due consideration for views in favour of the basic post and not exactly in favour of such views.

True, this can be possible among persons with some sense of fairness.

However, are the facts of the case really so objective?

My response

"All these procedural aspects are very welcome, provided the person who initiates the discussion starts with some reasonable authenticity for the facts and views.

Here, people initiate most of the threads with no care or concern for facts or authenticity and often even the first post is a just cut-and -paste from some other obscure source.

The participants are equally biased.

No one shows any respect for the alternate view.

Highly opinionated discussions alone thrive in social media.

How can you prescribe rules and conditions in such a situation?

Let me share an experience.
I quoted an old saying in Sanskrit from a celebrated text. “Even if we plant a seed of Neem in a mountain of sugar and irrigate the seed with milk, still the growing plant will have leaves and fruits of bitter taste.” (गुलपर्वतमध्यस्थं निम्बबीजं प्रतिष्टितम्।
पयोवर्षसहस्रेण निम्बः किं मधुरायते॥)
The argument was that some things could not leave their natural tendencies and tastes.
One woman was replying that Neem was a divine plant, a medicinal plant and therefore we should not insult it stating that the plant is having seeds and leaves bitter in taste.
I pointed out to her repeatedly that the issue under discussion was the natural bitterness of the plant and the discussion had nothing to do with the divine nature of Veppu or its medicinal qualities.
Even though I had explained to her the facts from all angles, still she became cross, abusive, left the discussion, and left the group too.

What to do with such people?

Memories of Narayana as the vital forces depart the body

Memories of Narayana as the vital forces depart the body..

If one leaves his body and during his final hours remembers Me, surely, he attains My own qualities and merge in Me, there is no reason for any doubt on this point,
So says the Blessed Lord Krishna

When something great, valuable or very important is available very near to them, people do not realize the importance of that thing, and they give scant respect or consideration for such object.
People, living on the banks of the extremely sacred river Ganga the Jahnavi, usually do not worship her.

Dear child, do not try to be overly adventurous and showy. Do not try to flaunt your physical and material advantages. Do not get arrogant when resources and wealth is continuing to flow in your direction and you are accumulating a lot of wealth like fat in the body. Remember. When you get old and infirm, even your own body would become a burden for you.

A person should not attend a public assembly without properly comprehending his functions and duties. When he speaks in an assembly, he should speak only things, which are just and truthful. If he cannot stand up and speak right things, then he should not enter an assembly at all.

A person participating in an assembly, if he fails to stand up and talk about what people expect of him or if he presents untruths, or talks improperly, then he would become a sinner.

is there any person in the universe having greater qualities than you, Krishna?

Agreed, Krishna, the Vedas are calling you the Supreme one without any attributes or qualities. However, in reality is there any person in the universe having greater qualities than you, Krishna?

Indeed, your greatest guna or good quality is your capacity and eagerness to permit even the greatest sinners to sail through this difficult journey of worldly woes and provide them Moksha or emancipation. Hari, who else other than you possess that quality,? You the one without any qualities and attributes? Funny!

त्वां you निर्गुणं without qualities, without attributes नाम as, assuming, वेदा vedas वदन्तु let them say वस्तुतः actually त्वत् greater than you गुणवत्तरः possessed of supreme attributes, qualities कुत्र where कःwho वा too अस्ति is there

the response by different persons to the same sort of experience is not same

Experience, is never gained by a person in absolute terms.

Each experience would be nice or galling to a person according to what training he directly or indirectly trained to or even the type of indoctrination he got.

For example, in some societies, a parent takes pride on and enjoys the painful experience suffered for the sake of an offspring.

The experience is actually painful in a physical sense, but exhilarating to the person who suffers.

This happens in self-torture, fasting, etc in religious rites and in so many social situations. Therefore the response by different persons to the same sort of experience need not be and usually will not be same.

This is an old slokam-one of the many indicating the code of conduct as per the traditions of our country.
A person who wishes the welfare of himself and all around him, should always move with utmost respect and do circumambulation (प्रदक्षिणं) when he in the presence of
1. Guru.. the preceptor
2.The Cow
3. Gods and deities ( in whatever form)
4. Hloy waters... teertham
5. Ghee ( because it is the source of health and is a primary ingredient for yajnas)
6. Honey ( reason as above)
7. The four-legged domestic animials
8. The revered trees of the forest ( may include even the herbs and other plants)
Pradakshinam is the show of ultimate reverence and of great discipline and self control in the presence of the most Venerated things.. And the inclusion of the products of nature in their pristine purity in the list of things to be respected would indicate the wisdom possessed by our ancestors.. Now we are setting up Green groups etc.. after the damage has already been done..

HAPPY PONGAL

HAPPY PONGAL
Makaram or Thai dawns with Utharayanam or the start of northward journey of the Lord of Planets.. the Sun
It is the dawning of Hope.. the day is the harbinger of Hope..
and Hope alone sustains us...
Bheeshma Pitamaha waited in his bed of arrows expecting communion with the Supreme Being at this moment years ago.
May that Krishna visit all of us and fulfill our Hopes too on that day
Happy Pongal..
Happy Makar Sankranti..
I do not really know in what all names this great event is celebrated across the sub continent.
But I am sure the it is a gala occasion all over India.
So greetings to all my fellow Indians and to all those who celebrate this festival of the farmer, the festival of nature.. anywhere ..
may Krishna's sweet grace reach all of us on this occasion..
Pranms.. and Prayers

Our longevity, the money we possess and our state of being young and energetic, all these three appear to be engaged in a state of mutual competition in running away from us leaving us high and dry. This is the fate of all of us living beings.

Yes, we do not have any clue as to when we would take our last breath. The money we have can disappear soon, either spent by us, stolen, looted pilfered or what not. And no amount of make up is going to keep us young for more than a few years. All the three are eager to bid good byes to us. And each departure leave us helpless.

neeetisaaram

Neetisaram actually is a compilation of great sayings and slokams in Sanskrit, compiled in Malayalam Script ( and this work contains couple of Malayalm stanzas too)

.It is in circulations in Kerala for century as oral tradition, and has been put to print a century and a quarter ago..
The students of Sanskrit in Kerala used to learn this too along with Sriramodantam, Sreekrishna Vilasam, Sidharoopam etc..
Neetisaram as a booklet used to be sold by vendors going around door to door, or selling them in festivals and fares..
The cost used to be a few paise..
The text as available in print today, contains about 120 slokas.. with minor change in numbers from version to version.
The students of Sanskrit were mostly from higher castes in the earlier generations and this text accordingly contains some slokas that would portray people of lower castes, and often even females as inferior to the caste males..
This tendency can be seen in about a dozen slokas..
But most other slokas are compiled from the works of great poets and seers.. often not caring to mention the sources, just like we find in social media.. and these quotes are of eternal value..

My obeisance to that Supreme Being, the creator of the world, and by His grace, whatever I learn from Books and any other sources may be grasped and retained by me to perfection..

May I grasp all that knowledge. Forgetfulness may never encompass me.

May the Heavenly beings never allow me to lose whatever has been heard and learned by me by way of science and scriptural knowledge.

Thus, I may have long aayus. OM..

This is the Vedic prayer meant for retention of whatever we have learned..

This is from Taittireeya aranyakam of Krishna Yajurveda..Mahanarayan Upanishad

Ravana

Ravana was defeated only because two great forces, that of Rama and Hanuman joined. The first meeting of Ravana and Hanuman is revealing.. Ravana wonders whether, Lord Shambu or Bhagavan Nandi has appeared before him in disguise. Hanuman is wonderstruck by the splendour of Ravana.. He confesses in His mind that if Ravana had not committed the wrong deed of abducting Sita, he would have been unconquerable- according to Hanuman's thinking only adharma was going to be the killer of Ravana.. One has to read the Eulogy Rama pays to Ravana after the latter's death to know how much he respected the strength of Ravana..

Every soldier should have a Ravana in Him. - One of the bravest soldiers ever lived- greatest leader-dignified even in his death.. Rama orders a soldier's honour to Ravana at his funeral..

The battle between devas and asuras and rakshasas have a different dimension.. I have read Uttarakandam to Ramayanam too. Of course, there is discussion in literary and academic circle whether that part of Ramayanam is integrally connected to the other six Kandams. However, what I wanted to say was that devas were always out to decimate their own half-brothers and cousins that were asuras etc. Ravana for example is the half-brother of Kubera. If Ravana and his uterine brothers had not moved with sense of purpose and defeated devas, they would have annihilated them. At least Ravana and other demons left devas alive. So in a battle, we cannot escape witnessing cruelty... be it in ancient wars or even in the latest wars.. Was Hiroshima any better? I am not justifying wars but we can easily understand the actions of the warring faction in annihilating even with cruelty the rival players..

And regarding Sita in captivity, no thinking person can deny the fact that the Lady was in captivity and absolute control of Ravana for all that period of captivity, and he could have thought of anything and acted on it.. So other questions on that issue are not very relevant.

characters in Ramayanam

Ravana is one of the most intriguing characters of Hindu lore. Very difficult to understand his motives. In fact how can one explain his keeping Sita pure under his captivity for almost one year, when he fully knew he could have done anything he wanted if pleasure was his motive?

Actually if we study Ramayana in depth, we would find that the contenders for the number one position in the epic are running very close to one another. The fore runners being Rama, Hanuman and Ravana--running neck to neck, with Bharatha, Kumbhakarna, Lakshmana etc following at very short distances behind.

suicide for survival of the race

Even though I am not able to give scientific proof, there are many views confirming that boozing and even suicidal tendencies are present even amongst some animals. Of course I shall cite examples from Ramayanam.. The destruction of Madhuvanam by the monkeys and the decision of the monkeys who had gone southward in search of Sita to commit suicide. Of course, the question as to whether the monkeys in Ramayana were actually monkeys—is a riddle.

And we can see another incidence of apparent suicide in respect of plants which grow in cluster. Take the case of a guava fruit, for instance. One single fruit will contain hundreds of seeds. If the fruit falls on a fertile piece of ground, eventually all the seeds will sprout and germinate. However, after a time, apart from a handful of saplings or plants, all other sprouts die down. At that stage, we can infer that either as just death or as suicide by the majority of the plants to permit one or two of their species to grow.

You must have heard of the many brothers of Shakuni the Gandhara imprisoned in a dark cellar to die. With a view to take vengeance on their tormenter, all except Shakuni died voluntarily, gave up their food in favour of the sole survivor whom they nourished. Through suicide, they could ensure their success to their mission. Shakuni survived and ensured the vengeance on Kurus through his nasty manipulations later.

eternal debt to parents

The parents brought to this world this body of a man that is the ultimate source and repository of his wealth, happiness and welfare,

They nurtured it too. Even hundred births and service to the parents throughout would not be sufficient to repay them adequately for such a gift.

generate sublime thoughts in their hearts and give sublime expression to them through spoken words.

Good and attractive words just appear in the lips of some people just like parrots.

Good and attractive words and thoughts remained confined deep inside the minds of many people giving the impression that such people are just dumb and incapable of speaking.

However, noble, attractive thoughts flow in profusion from the depth of the hearts of some people who are blessed and the words flow with great force. They find expression through the mouths in the form of worthy pronouncements.
Yes, some people just utter high-sounding words without knowing what they are talking. It is like the blabbering of parrots. Many others may be having noble thoughts but they are incapable of articulating such thoughts. They are not much better than the dumb ones.
The really great and accomplished scholars generate sublime thoughts in their hearts and they would be able to give sublime expression to such thoughts through spoken words. They are the cream of this earth.

We can find lots and many good people who are ready to help the needy with gifts of cows, gold and even land. However, it is indeed very difficult to find people with strength and willingness to give protections to living beings facing great threats to their lives and existence.

It is easier to help others with materials. However, it takes a lot of strength and character to stand up against adversities and offer protection to people in peril.

thorough analysis and threadbare criticism

It is highly impossible to decide whether a poet or scholar is indeed very great or whether he is just average, without putting the respective poetic creations to severe and exacting tests through thorough analysis and threadbare criticism.
It only when a strong and intense wind is blowing that we could distinguish whether what is shining before us is just a burning wick of a lamp or a very valuable gem which is shedding its inherent brilliant lustre
When the wind blows, the wick would be blown out. But the shine of the gem would continue for ever. Similarly the work of a poetic creation of an author with class would withstand any sort of criticism or incisive analysis, but the creation of an empty and showy writer would be shred to pieces when subjected to popular analysis.

we have evolved some basic truce by usage over time

An action cannot be right just because I am inclined to perform it.

Nor can it be wrong because someone whom I do not exactly see eye to eye performs it.

Right and wrong are relative, one may argue, but still when there are many people walking around on this earth in addition to me,  we have evolved some basic truce by usage over time, on what is right or otherwise. In addition, the majority of people have followed the terms and conditions. Therefore, I am bound to accept and follow such terms as working agenda for my own peace and the peace of others.

Coming to think of it, marital fidelity, parental responsibility and even fairness in life and having generally accepted manners and lifestyle, are all essential parts of this truce.

In addition, often, as we evolve as a group, many of the traditions attain the force of law. Moreover, some people even assume that such laws have the endorsement of God

It is not difficult to ponder over these facts and accept them at intellectual level.

Nevertheless, at emotional level, our animal tendencies tend to raise their heads and the impulsive man within defeats the rational one.

In a group, be it family, professional colleague, co-patriots and so on, we have the advantage that our colleagues pull us back to realities of life when we tend to wander off.

However, in social media, we find no such restraints. We tend to notice nothing except an arrogant muddled mind and the keyboard, and a lighted console or a mobile screen perhaps in a dark backdrop.

This issue should attract our attention.

Are we going back to the jungle?

Nevertheless, even jungles have their rules.

when the seeker has crossed a certain level, he should go ahead realizing the greatness of his sublime journey

Presentation of many episodes in Puranas are like offering small pieces of peppermint to a child whom we are persuading to drink some bitter medicine.

While the child gulps the medicine because of the sweet peppermint, the child forgets the bitterness of the medicinal potion.

Just like that, people who are reluctant to approach God or spirituality because the path is so tough although the way of God is of great benefit similar to the medicine, turn to divinity through stories. .

It is with this idea that gurus and preceptors feed the followers with some stories that describe incidents where the divine grace came very easily.

The stories are not entirely lies.

Just like peppermint, they are simple and sweet.

Nevertheless, the real destination is far away.

The travel is difficult even for the best of yogis to embark on.

However, the presentation of attractive stories at the gate or entrance to the world of spirituality somehow persuades people to enter the threshold and take the first few steps in their long yet blessed journey towards the infinite.

The seeker should ever remember that such stories would have very little appeal for the one who has already crossed the gate and is on his way to realization.

When the whole landscape is flooded with torrential supply of water in a heavy rain, the tiny puddle of water loses its significance.

. yaavaan artha udapaane sarvataH samplutodake...यावान् अर्थ उदपाने सर्वतः संप्लुतोदके as rightly pointed out by the Blessed Lord in Gita..

Therefore, when the seeker has crossed a certain level, he should go ahead realizing the greatness of his journey and its sublime destination and it is not necessary at all to ruminate over the old anecdotes that would sound like fables and nursery rhymes.

eroticism in religion

The eroticism is part of the Shakta type of worship, which is a well-established line.

In addition, Shrimad Bhagavatham, a Purana that is about 1200 years old, in its tenth Skanda portrays Krishna as a playful child and a Mischievous and naughty lover too

The less lettered humans feel that God as described in erudite texts like Vedas and Upanishads and the shapeless nirguna brahma is not within their grip

Therefore, the idea of approaching God through Prema or love mixed with devotion took shape

On many occasions, it is parental love, fraternal love, friendship and so on.

However, of course the most intense of the relationships is romance tinged with eroticism.

Eroticism removes all anxieties and inhibitions in the simple living beings approach to the Supreme Being.

Therefore, that became an integral part of worship

Hero worship is at its best when the devotee adds some tinge of romance. That is human nature.

The social practices get formal approval in rituals and even in laws of the state eventually.

Of course, almost in every religion known to man, we find that there is some worship, in some shape or other, of the genital organs, as they are the source of new life. In some places, it is subtle, and in some cases, it is showy

In addition, eroticism has close connection with the physical organs that arouse such feelings.

Eroticism in religion is not an isolated feature of ancient India. We can be find that in many ancient religions and aborigine practice all across the world.

When a person has to attend to a lot of work, he should arrange his functions in such a way that the most relevant and important things come as first priority and non-essentials come later. The order of performance and the speed of execution also should be regulated this way. A person working this way is the one who is really the diligent one.

He is sure to regret his hasty decision and it will not stop with such regret alone. The physical incapacity would lead to a fall in the standards of performance and consequently desired results would never come.

An oriental advice regarding regulated drinking of water along with meals or food
If you swallow too large quantities of water along with Annam, that would slow down and obstruct the digestion of food.
If you do not take adequate quantity of water, that too would hamper the digestive process. Therefore, a man should drink water in slow and steady intervals, but not in excessive quantities, if he is to ensure that his digestive juices get powerful and work at optimally efficient levels.

the idiotic or impish or the donkey-like part distorts the facts

The issue of balance and equipoise has worried great philosophers and thinker or all hues and ideologies-believers and non-believers, half believers and so on.

One part of the mind understands reason and fairly knows what is safe and good for it and the body housing it.

Then the idiotic or impish or the donkey-like part distorts the facts and impulses in myriad ways and this happens even more when more than one human thinking unit is present and the group form and think tank, and the tank is always leaking or ls filled with high-pressure gas ready to explode.

The tendency to defeat oneself for no good reason appears to be inbuilt in our psyche and all thinkers are just attempting to tame or annihilate this tendency- to kill it before it kills us.

Right from Pranayama, Yoga, and any art of living methods canvassed anywhere in any age was an attempt to reach such a realistic balance.

Whether human kind really succeeded in it is a debatable issue.

The use of temporary pacifiers and peacemakers like liquid spirits and drugs and other social sops have also not entirely succeeded.

There is real peace and constancy of mind for a man... and only for a man who is either not yet born, or is already dead.

I agree. One thing that has kept me in reins is that I chant Vishnusahasranamam repeatedly. Substitute that chant with any divine name of any faith and I am confident that it works. Vishnusahasranamam has worked for me for years and years.

My usage about a dead or the unborn is a hyperbole- in fact no one knows a man who is dead or who is not born-I was just articulating the difficult proposition of attaining absolute peace of mind. Only the best among the best may go anywhere near that blissful peace. I was attempting to articulate that concept, albeit inadequately. There can hardly be any difference on that premise. We have to travel long distances even to get the inkling that such a bliss is existing.

my mind is a donkey.. It refuses to accept things and accommodate

I am not able to shrug off the tendency to classify ideas, things and people as good, average or repulsive and permitting such mental classification to develop my attitude of cordiality, just toleration or even acute hatred towards them on a permanent and rigid basis..
After all, nothing is good, average or repulsive on a permanent scale of time and space..
Certain acts, thoughts, and views may make them so temporarily.. and it is not only their action but my own response to it that finally shapes my attitude ..
But then my mind is a donkey.. It refuses to accept things and accommodate changes...
Then the donkey knows the language of kicking and thrashing only..

the flow of time is forging ahead without interruption

I read views that the new year is not an Indian one..
I have great difficulty in agreeing to that ,
My view in Sanskrit on the issue is just reproduced below..
वस्तुतः कालस्य प्रवाहः निर्बाधम् पुरो गच्छति.I..
भारतीयं वा पाश्चात्यं वा संवत्सरस्य आरम्भः जनानां चिन्तायां एव वर्तते.. I
meaning..
actually the flow of time is forging ahead without interruption. The beginning of a year, be it Indian or Western, is in the the thoughts of the people..
If Indians in adequate number are too celebrating new year, it is only right..
When it is so , the view that it is not new year for India is not correct in my opinion.
May the newly born year produce progress as blessed by the Lord Vaasudeva.

sooner or later every despost failed

with some sensible self talk, I can decide or at least convince myself as to how I should behave and interact with others..
but I have often made the mistake of expecting the way others should behave and interact with me.. It is a grave error.. mistake .. even sin
If I do not want to hear a voice, I should clear away from the origin of the noise or I can close my ears, even with an earplug..
But I cannot afford to shut the mouth of the person making the noise..
Even the mightiest and the cleverest despots failed because they wanted to make others adjust their behaviour to suit their own autocratic ways..
And sooner or later every despost failed, or would fail..

incometax officer

A friend and colleague asks..what should one remember when he becomes an income tax officer for the first time..
My answer is
The capacity to lead  comes by instinct and observation..nothing special happens when one becomes an ITO.
An open mind and fighter instinct..should be there.
And the realization that the officer is a judge and at the same time the advocate for Revenue should be kept in mind.
And you are making your decisions..there can be appeals on the issue up to the Supreme Court..
So it should be remembered that you are a judge..however small the issue is.
And in the practical way..the department exists only if the assessee earns income. So we should never destroy the source of income or the one who earns
( I think that question was put to me because I worked as ITO and higher capacities for three decades)

Vyasa is just a staus.. like a generic name

Vyasa is just a staus.. like a generic name for a poet or scribe.. nothing more. They assign authorship of everything to this composite name
Researchers are of the conclusion that Mahabharatham evolved through two millenniums or perhaps even one millennium more. Some parts of Bharatham would have been added as late as even five hundred years ago. But the core structure, storyline and philosophy have taken solid shape at least 2000 years ago. The main part of Adiparva.. which can be equated to the primary structure of Mahabharatham that goes by the name Jayam was there for 3000 plus years.
But Srimad Bhagavatham is substantially not older than 500 years..perhaps some parts might be slightly older. Not older than 750 or 800 years. The persuasive effect of Bhakti movement in preference to vedantic, advaitic, karmic or yajnic ways are too pronounced in Bhagavatham.
Of course people giving discourse either in Ramayanam or Bharatham or Bhagavatham would either swear or vouchsafe that the contents are authentic according to the occasion and as per the text they deal with. They also would try to bring in reconciliation over paradoxes through very laboured and unrealistic explanations.. and the aam a AdmI audience would lap it up.
But the lines followed are indeed varying and contradictory often. Sensible persons should accept this and should imbibe the spirit of the works rather than dwelling on stories and creating fights. A culture that is continuously flourishing for more than 5000 years cannot be uniform and will not repeat stories like parrots
