The enlightened preceptor imparts knowledge to all his disciples alike

vitarati guruH prAjne vidyAM yathaiva tathA jaDe
na tu khalu tayoH jnAne shakti karoti apahanti vA ।
bhavati hi punaH bhUyAn bhedaH phalaM prati tad yathA
prabhavati shuchiH bimbagrAhe mRut AdayaH ॥ – uttararAmacharita

The enlightened preceptor imparts knowledge to all his disciples alike, irrespective of whether the student is a brilliant one or is very dull intellectually. The lessons or even the capacity or earnestness of the teacher really adds or takes away nothing beyond a certain optimal level from the subject matter of the lesson. The lessons, by themselves do not add either fortune or lack of it to the recipient of the knowledge. However, we see substantial variation in quality of enlightenment received by the individual disciples. While a gem of crystal receives the brilliance of light falling on them and reflect it with greater resplendence, the same light falling on a heap of mud keeps the mud simply dark..

the words uttered by arrogant and excessively proud people are often devilish

Noble and wise sages have always called the words uttered by arrogant and excessively proud people as devilish. Those words are the breeding places for enmity and strife. Such words are harbingers of destruction of the world, nemesis indeed
From Uttara Rama Charita of Bhavabhuti

ऋषयः the sages, the wise people उन्मत्त arrogant, दृप्तयोः proud वाचं words राक्षसीं devilish आहु call
सा वाक् that word सर्व all वैराणां enmity, intense conflict योनिः womb, breeding place सा she, that word लोकस्य of the world निर्ऋतिः हि calamity, destruction, nemesis indeed.

soft as flower, hard as diamond...

vajrādapi kaṭhorāṇi mṛdūni kusumādapi ।
lokottarāṇāṃ cetāṃsi ko hi vijñātumarhati ॥
uttararāmacaritaṃ aṅga 2 śloka 7

A great statement from Bhavabhuti’s Uttararamacharitam

People of real worth and class should know when to be tough and when to be soft.. That discretion comes to them so naturally.. But people who watch them would never be able to understand how that switchover in attitude really occurs.
The meaning of the Slokam
The minds of the greatest among men in the world would be at times tougher than diamond itself and would be softer than the petals of flowers at other times.. Who can really comprehend how such great minds work?
The attitude changes like this.. When very tough and difficult decisions are to be taken and acted upon by the great person himself, he converts his mind so tough as if it is diamond itself..
However, when he is on a mission to help the difficulties or miseries faced by others his mind melts with compassion, and the mind is as soft as a flower.
Also, when the noble man is in a position of affluence where he can help others, his mind is as soft as flowers and he helps one and all.
However, when he is facing a financial cruch, he becomes tough with himself, and his mind becomes rock solid, and he would not deign it proper to beg and compromise just to sustain himself.

nice words ..

The truthful and auspicious words
Yield all our wishes in abundance
Dispels poverty

Gives birth to great fame
Annihilates the bad effects of possible misdeeds
That mother in the shape of nice words is called by the wise people verily as the matriarch of cows, Kamadhenu, who is ever eager to grant all the wises to those who are close to her.

for the really great, words uttered just make the meaning.

ṛṣīṇāṁ punarādyānāṁ vācamartho'nuvartate||
bhavabhūtipraṇīte uttararāmacarite prathame aṅke

This is from the first act of Uttararamacharitam..

Uttararamacharitam is a drama by Bhavabhuti, a poet of Sanskrit who is treated as equal to Kalidasa himself by many..

The plot for the Drama is the happenings after the Coronation of Rama.. the history dealt with in Uttarakandam of Ramayanam

In the first Act, the location is Rama's Palace in Ayodhya..

Sita is in her pregnancy, and the elders in the family are all away attending a sacrifice being conducted by Sage Rishyasringa, who is also the husband of Ramas elder Sister Shanta..

A set of sages led by Ashtavakra, the disciple of Rishyasringa have arrived in Ayodhya to enquire about the well being of Rama and Sita, and the delegation meets the Royal couple..

The sage conveys Rama the blessing of Rishyasringa and Sage Vasishta too who was away at the sacrifice..yajna

The blessing of the elders that Sita would deliver progeny befitting the valour and glory of the divine couple is conveyed to Rama and Sita..

Happy to hear that Rama exclaims..

"The speech of worldly wise saints follows or narrates the course of events as they have happened or are happening.. But the speech of ancient and venerable saints ( like Vasishta) when uttered just makes thing happen as per what is intended in those speeches.."

Rama is elated at the blessing of his Guru that he is going to beget a worthy progeny as he is convinced that the mere utterance of the great saints would make anything happen.. Ordinary people just use speeches to report what is happening.. and they have only the capacity to report or convey in words what is going on around, or narrate something that has already happened..

But great sages have the capacity to foresee the future.. Not only that, if words are uttered by great souls, nature and the universe just obey those predictions and things just happen.

These words of Bhavavbhuti have to be compared or
contrasted with Kalidasa's statement about Vaak and Artha.. as pronounced in the opening stanza of Raghuvamsam..
Vaagarthaaviva Samprukthau, Vaagartha prathipattaye jagataH pitarau vande paarvathee parameshwarau..

Kalidasa implies that words and meanings are closely connected and function as inseparable twins.. being faithful to one another..

Bhavabhuti improvises on the idea.. For the ordinary people, words uttered just convey the meaning..

But for the really great, words uttered just make the meaning..
Of course this is stuff for academics too..

There has been always a set of people who place Bhavabhuti in the same pedestal with Kalidasa.. and there are those who cannot allow anyone else to be spoken of in equal terms with Kalidasa..
