Lalithasahasranamam 2

Lalithasahasranamam 2

There is some substantial ground to be covered before discussing the sacred names of the Mother. But the first name “Sreematha” fascinates me.
A few reasons that comes to the mind
1. Everywhere in this earth where human beings live, whatever religion, region, or language is followed, a child born, the living human being’s first introduction to this earth, first feels its connection with the human being from whose body it got separated. At the same moment it feels the pang of separation from that body too. So the child celebrates its birth and at the same moment laments its severance from the umbilical connection, sharing both jubilation and the pangs of separation with its mother. The first word that voluntarily erupts out of the Childs’s vocal chords and forms by the simple joining of the upper lip with the lower one is “Ma” and we find to our surprise that in almost all languages, that “Ma” is the basic component of the word denoting mother.. maatha, mother, mater, amma, amba, ammai, maa, mam, mammy, mom, mommy, mamen, everything is mother..
Sure it is the first word that erupted first from the lips of every human being that took birth on this earth..
2 There was a stage in the growth of human beings, where there was no religion, language, no idea of human relations, no idea about God. The man of that age looked at everything around him with fear, with awe, with uncertainty and even with suspicion. He was baffled by the unpredictability of all things that happened around him. Nothing could be said for sure. If he had met an animal which he could expect to kill next day for food and somehow marked its location, and went back to the same spot next day and could not find the prey any more, he did not know whether he should feel sorry, or whether he should cry in desperation. He did not know what to do. But his first lesson in life was that the behavior of nature around him was beyond his control. Clouds gathered, lightning struck the earth, rains poured in torrents, all beyond his control. He saw the sun rise and set. He saw the moon wax and wane. He did not have any say in the behavior of the cloud or rain or the sun or the moon. He saw plants grow, flower, bear fruits, and die or got burnt in wildfire as summer season came. He saw plants grow again with rains. He saw his own fellow beings die without any predictability, and he also saw his own images emerging from the womb of his womenfolk. All these happening made him believe that there was some power completely beyond his knowledge and control which regulated the rhythm of nature and also caused the birth and creation of all things animate and inanimate and also the destruction of living things. ..
He did not have any knowledge even about the process as to how he was born. He was not perhaps aware that human foetus formed in the womb of a woman through the male-female interaction. He saw that the abdomen of the females of his group started swelling, and was afraid that it was a disease. But when after some time, the womb expanded and a little living being in the same shape but in miniature form as the human being was thrown out and that small one started breathing and suckling by itself he was filled with awe and a lot of respect for the apparent source of the little being..

The human being in his innocence connected a great power in nature with the growth of trees and animals and other living beings. He saw the same creation process replicated from the belly of a female. So the natural inference for him was that the female being represented the supreme power which represented the creation, maintenance, and destruction.. srushti, sthithi and samhaaram of all that is present in the universe.

So he identified the Divine being with the females. The women, all the women in this world. That alone can be the first interpretation for calling the Supreme being as Maatha.. The mother.. This definition is proved without any reference to any creed or scripture. It is simply the product of innocent reasoning.. And therefore it is truth, and absolute truth.

Sri Lalithasahasranamam

Sri Lalithasahasranamam

We revere Sri Lalithasahasranamam and SriVishnunsahasranamam as the most sacred of the threads of thousand names attributed to our beloved deities..

Amba Tripurasundari is the beloved of many devotees of all the ages and there are many Sahasranamas written in Her honour..

But the Lalitha Sahasranamam coming as the concluding part of the Brahmandapuranam where the Last forty chapters of the Uthara Khandam shine like a garland named as the celebrated Sri Lalithopakhyanam.
Towards the end of Lalithopakhyaanam, three chapters give the immortal gem of Lalitha Sahasranamam as if forming a shining pendant to the garland that is Lalithopakhyaanam..
Primarily the Sahasranamam describes the thousand most glorious names of Rajarajesvari, the Mahatripurasundari..
However, the Vishnupuranam and Srimad Bhagavatham itself state that, the last of the Mahapuranas that Vyasa wrote was the Brahmandapuranam and the episode of Matha Lalitha covers the final 43 chapters of this Puranam.
Therefore, scholars are of the view that all the wisdom and philosophy that all the eighteen Mahapuranas contain are seen to have been presented as a highly concentrated capsule of Amrutham in Lalithasahasranamam.
Therefore a devotee who studies this hymn on Lalithadevi, and contemplates on the content of each name, each letter and syllable with deep introspection and reverence, in addition to being blessed with the mother with all that is good and required for him in this world and in the eternal life, would become an adept in the nuances of the philosophy and content of what we now see as Hinduism.
Mother Lalithambika is Avyaajakarunaamoorthy.. the embodiment of mercy without any reservations or hold-back..
People capable of making gifts do so with a lot of strings attached and without concealing their arrogance and without failing to rub in their superiority..
However this Lady Lalitha, is our Mother, and no mother would feel arrogant and boastful when they tend their children.
She is our mother and we can ask for anything from her without hesitation..
And she cannot help granting us our desires, if she can manage, and there is hardly anything that she cannot manage..
Therefore in our relation to the Mother, we are always in a win-win situation.
True, she will provide for us with all our needs even without asking.

Nevertheless, she is a mother with innumerable children, all of us.

We know how a mother with even a single naughty toddler struggles so much..

Therefore why don’t we help her by just asking what we want and only what really want..?
This is my introspection after falling in utter surrender at the feet of the Lord of Lords Krishna, and my dear Mother Lalithambika.. Mahatripurasundari.. Rajarjeswari..

The great Vidyopaasaka Bhaskararaya has written a great commentary on this Mahamantram.

Hiranmayeem Lakshmeem..

Hiranmayeem Lakshmeem..
composition of Muthuswamy Deekshitar.
In fact it is beautiful verse.. and the great composer Muthuswamy Deekshitar has drawn some very sacred and fitting words from Veda.. to be specific Sreesooktham of Rigvedam..
Sanskrit is amenable to music, but one cannot say creations in Sanskrit are just made for music.. in which respect other languages with lesser demands of grammar and syntax score..
Tamil and old dialects of Hindi are examples..
Kannada is also in a better position there..
But languages like Telugu and Malayalam which are closer to Sanskrit face stiffer challenges but it is to the credit of great composers like Deekshitar, Tyagabrahmam, Shyama Sastri.. and many other greats.. that they have created pure and enchanting music through the medium of such languages..
coming to the Kriti

She is as resplendent as gold...( sure gold is the core of fire Jaatavda and She is one with Jaataveda...)
One has to free himself from the shackles of the mean people who amass wealth by fair means or foul, if the Grace of Lakshmi is to visit him.
She is the source of eternal wealth..
She is the daughter of the Milky ocean..
She lives in the Shreevasta birthmark in the chest of that inimitable Hari..
She is as coy as a doe..
She has feet as soft and pretty as a lotus,,
She holds in her hand a blue lotus ( Deekshitar sees Shakthi,, the Lalithatripura Sundaree everywhere including Lakshmi)
She is surrounded by gems like Marakatam ( after all all the treasures like Shanka Nidhi and Padma nidhi are hers)
She is residing in Shvetadveepa ( Shvetadveepa is the abode of Durga Parameshvari...)
She is the Kamalambika.. the Vidya.. Mahatripurasundari.. She controls the past and future ( the present too ) with her divine grace..
She is worshipped by Brahmins and scholars of Vedas who are considered as devas manifest on this earth..
She is the best among the best..
She is my mother..
She wears a garland of the flower that grows in water.. lily or lotus.. She wears ornaments of manikya ..
She is supremely happy in listening to Vocal and instrumental music..
She is born in the mountain.. that is She is Uma too the daughter of Himavaan .. (Umaa Shailendratanayaa...)
She is Indira.. the Laksmi.. deriving that name from the exalted origin from pure water..
She is as soothing and cool as the rays of the Moon.. (cf... Indiraaam Indu sheetalaam.. in Lakshmi Ashtottaram.)
. She is residing in Chintamani.. the ultimate abode of Vidya.. Mahatripurasundaree..
Dikshitar declares that he is just singing on Lakshmi keeping in his mind that She is just a manifestation of Mahatripura Sundari..
the import will be appreciated more by the Vidya Upasakas more.. and Dikshitar is a great Vidya Worshipper..
She wears bright yellow dress and
she is the aunt.. the maternal uncle's consort of that great guru.. Skanda the Guha ( Guruguha)
In fact every word is crafted to suit the musical cadence, but it has been ensured that grammar and spirit of Sanskrit language does not encounter any compromises..
The mind of the composer is eminently musical and scholarly too.. I feel it is just not human, but something Divine, heavenly..
Ultimately what manifests is the great Vidya Upasakas yearning to see Lalitha Maha Tripurasundari.. in every manifestation of Divinity..
Of course, I listened to the rendering by many Vidvans .. but except a handful, even if all do justice to the music part of it, the Sahityam is a real challenge.. and beyond many except perhaps the best..

The mangalya sutra

The mangalya sutra.. a cotton thread, smeared with turmeric is supposed to carry the thali.. or the divine insignia which a groom ties to the bride and the bride as wife is expected to wear it as long as the husband lives..
In Lalitha Sahasranamam we see that  the Mother Rajarajeshvari, Mahatripurasundari  Lalithambika is shining for with the mangalyasootram tied around her neck by none other than Kamesha..  the Supreme Lord  Sadashiva Himself..
कामेशबद्ध माङ्गल्यसूत्र शोभित कन्धरा
I read somewhere a remark that manjal kayiru (the cotton thread smeared with turmeric and perhaps tied with a tiny piece of dried turmeric) is a thing of the past and the ladies now wear only golden chains carrying the thaali..
But this is not correct.. according to the traditions..

My views.
manjal kayiru should not be removed..
if anyone claims that  she is Sumangali .

The mangalyam is tied to a thanthu..
a cotton thread and not gold chain..
and this tantu is the jeevana hetu of the one who ties the thread..
jeevana hethu means the cause of longevity of the husband and that depends on this thread and mangalyam...
it is at least believed so...
as per the following manthram
maangalyam tantunaa anena mama jeevana hetunaa..

Meaning..
Oh fortunate lady, I am tying this Manglyam made of thread around your neck , This thread represents or is the cause of my longevity..
May you live happily for hundred autumns..

The thread is smeared with turmeric or manjal because manjal represents Mahalakshmi Herself.
A thali chain cannot replace a manjal kayiru as per our religion and traditions ..
If someone is claiming that it does not matter even if mangalyam is not worn.. the possibilities can be many and I have nothing to say..
I am just viewing the issue from the angle of traditions and our faith.

Mouthful of betel leaves

Mouthful of betel leaves
--------------------------------

Name 559 of Lalitha Mahatripura sundari  Mother Rajarajeshwari
 in lalitha sahasranamam ..
is
ताम्बूलपूरितमुखी
Thaamboola pooritha mukhee

She whose mouth is filled with betel leaves and additions which she is chewing...
a very affectionate imagery of the Divine mother
even if she is the most beautiful woman chewing must be giving her a funny face..
and yes, the adorindg devotee who sees Her as the mother will have no difficulty in loving that funny face..
If a devotee is having reverence alone for the divine he would have found it difficult to call her by such an unorthodox name..
And mind you it was lord Hayagreeva describing
Her by this name to sage Markandeya..
Even the great souls forget themselves when they are overcome with affection..
Or was it that Lord Hayagreeva who is Narayana himself having a poke at his little sister.?
Anyway it isour fortune that we can approach and get things done easily as the mother is in a relaxed mood chewing pan..

It is another story that she spat a little of this tamboolam into the gaping mouth of an idiot Mooka and he sang the Mookapanchaasati ..

Vishvam Vishnur...

Maybe it is only a story...if you ask where it is found, in which purana, which chapter, which slokam.. No answer.

We know AdiShakarabhagavatPadaa wrote a commentary on Vishnusahasranamam.. Judging by the clear attachment of Shankara for the smartha way of life, this is an enigma.

There is a story abot it..

One day the Acharya was planning to compose a commentary on Lalitha Sahasranamam.. He asked his disciple Sureshwarachary to fetch the palm-leaves containing the text of Lalithasahasranamam from the inside of the Mutt..
The disciple went inside and brought a bundle of palm-leaves and to his surprise it was Vishnusahstranamam..
The Acharya pointed out the mistake and sent the disciple to fetch the correct text.

This time when the disciple went in he saw a cute girl of eight years red in colour and clad in red and this girl handed over a bundle of palm-leaves saying this that must be the book the Guru was searching for..

Dutifully Sureshwaracharya took the bundle, and when Acharyaswamikal opened it it was found that Vishnusahasranamam alone has been brought once again ..

The Guru asked the disciple as to why the wrong text was brought once again.

And Sureshwara replied that a small girl child was standing inside the mutt and had given him this text and insisted that it should be taken to the Guru ..

The acharya could not understand what was happening.

." A young girl in our mutt?.".

So the Master went in to verify what was happening, with Sureshwara following closely.. He saw the Girl of the hue of Sindooraaruna, clad in dark red dress, and she was telling.
" You describe the names of my brother, I am pleased to hear that more than mine.."

It was Gauri Lalithamahatripurasundari, instructing Shankara.. He prostrated at Her lotus feet and started explaining Vishnusahasranamam..

The great Bhagavatha exponent and Tapaswi , Brahmasri Sengalipuram Anantharama Deeskhitar has narrated this story in many of his discourses..

Depletion of Personal Power of Penance.

Depletion of Personal Power of Penance..

॥आपस्तंबः॥
apamānāttapovṛddhiḥ sanmānāttapasaḥ kṣayaḥ|
arcitaḥ pūjito vipro dugdhā gauriva sīdati||
āpyāyate yathāhastu tṛṇairamṛtasaṁbhavaiḥ|
evaṁ japaiśca homaiśca punarāpyāte dvijaḥ||
|'apastaṁbaḥ||

Some of my friends had raised a query whether a person having divine and spiritual powers will have those powers reduced or depleted if he blesses others and passes his spiritual power in that process.
A quote from the Dharmsastra of Apastambha.
(the text is given above)
If the tapas(or penance) of a person is ignored or not taken note of by others, the power continues to increase..
If the powers are noticed by others and the person is respected and worshiped for that reason the tapas or the power of penance gets depleted..
When a learned man is offered respects, his powers are actually taken away from him like a cow which is milched.
After receiving such worship, the learned man becomes almost powerless..
This is similar to what happens to a cow. When a cow is milched in the morning, it becomes weak.. but during the day the cow eats grass which is like amrutam or elixir for it and she becomes energetic again and her udders are filled with milk..
In the same way, the learned man regenerates his depleted power of penance by meditation, chanting of mantras and offering oblations to fire..

The quote from Apastambha is also seen in Bhaskara Raya's vyakhyanam of Lalitha Sahasranamam.. while explaining the meaning of the name
"Viprapriyaa" विप्रप्रिया( Saubhagyabhaskara Bhaashyam)
