procedure for Preparation of three-strand pure cotton thread for yajnopaveetham (Poonool)

Preparation of three-strand pure cotton thread for yajnopaveetham is as follows.

Those who prepare muppiri poonal should be clean and should occupy or sit in clean place.

Eligible Vedic Brahmins, Sumangalis, Kannyakas, and Widows who observe the correct austerities can weave the thread used for this. Those who prepare poonal must encircle (tie round their fingers) their fingers of right hand having each circle of unbroken continuous thread having length of four inches and the thread should be encircled thus for ninety six times. After that, they divide the unbroken thread equally into three sections and then they make them hold fast by spiralling together very tightly.

Then you should adjust this strengthened thread into three equal circles together and tie the ends securely covering all the three equal circles of thread together.

This gives one set of muppiri nool or poonal.

Vedic Brahmins chant Mantrams like Gayatri or Vedic Sookthams while making the final knot, which we call brahma kattu or mudichu.

One should wear the three strand poonal across the torso with one part covering the left shoulder and the other part hanging just above the hip, just up to navel. If for some reason the poonal is longer and goes below navel, the brahma kattu tied should be made bgger by spiralling part of the thread ,and the brahma mudichu can be at be of the size of a seed of payaru.. Pulse or pea seed.

The rule among Brahmins of Tamil Nadu and migrants from there is that the unmarried male wears a set of one strand and a grihasta or the one who had undergone samavartanam wears two strands and the grihasta wears an additional set of poonal to substitute for uthareeyam.

Kula acharam

Primarily our spirituality is based on shruti or vedas.. and the smritis and soothras based on that.

Kula acharam evolves based on these.

If some acharam which are not according to shruti and smrithi and sootras creep in they should be stopped immediately when such aberrations are noticed.

Such aberrations can easily happen nowadays because many of us and our parents too are not sure about the rules.

And a vadhyar or a guru of a region different from ours originally may not understand our exact background.

Those who re settle in metroplis or north or foreign countries face such issues.

And sadly there is a tendency to flout acharams and introduce new practices contrary to shrutis and smrithis even in ancient agraharams like ours.

That is suicidal

Read about small boys of the village going around the agraharam on Avaniavittam day asking for small coins and komanam.. the piece of white used to be tied to the loins.

I too was such an urchin decades ago

I have a poignant tragic memory about this Avaniavittam komanam thendal..the memory is more than fifty five years old.

After going the round in the entire Agraharam my collection in half anna and one anna coins would have been about a rupee and a half.

To avoid pilferage of my precious treasury by sisters and cousins I had hidden myself behind a wooden door in the nezhi ( the dingy covered first room of an Agraharam house) of the next house.

A paatti (a very old granny) there discovered me and when I confessed about the possibility of my grand collection of money being stolen she asked me to hand over the coins to her for safe keeping.

The innocent me obeyed her instantly.

But after a couple of hours when I went to that mottai paatti to retrieve back my treasure she refused having taken the money from me and even said with a straight face that she had not seen me during the past few days.

I tried to rope in the help of all around but like water poured on hot iron my money had evaporated never to come back.

Had I shared the cash with my sisters or cousins all would have been happy.

One and half rupees could do wonders fifty five years ago.

That paatti is gone decades ago and lakhs or even crores of rupees have passed through my hands later..especially as I was a taxman often engaged in confiscating black money..but the memory of those few coins collected through virtual begging at every doorstep of all the Agraharam houses brings tears of loss and smile of amusement together in my mind.

Those were the days...
