किं कूर्मस्य भरव्यथा न वपुषि क्ष्मां न क्षिपत्येष यत्

किंवा नास्ति परिश्रमो दिनपतेरास्ते न यन्निश्चलः ।

किंत्वङ्गीकृतमुत्सृजन् स्वमनसा श्लाघ्यो जनो लज्जते

निर्वाहः प्रतिपन्नवस्तुषु सतामेतद्धि गोत्रव्रतं ॥ १३ ॥

भर्तृहरेः नीतिशतके

kiṃ kūrmasya bharavyathā na vapuṣi kṣmāṃ na kṣipatyeṣa yat

kiṃvā nāsti pariśramo dinapaterāste na yanniścalaḥ ।

kiṃtvaṅgīkṛtamutsṛjan svamanasā ślāghyo jano lajjate

nirvāhaḥ pratipannavastuṣu satāmetaddhi gotravrataṃ ॥ 13 ॥

bhartṛhareḥ nītiśatake

Do you think that there is no physical pain and extreme strain for the primordial tortoise, Adhi Koorma which carries for ever the heavy burden of this earth on its back. Does it ever put down the earth even for a moment for that reason?

Do you think that the sun who is ever moving around in the sky shedding light and warmth for the universe is never tired of its eternal jouney? Does he ever stop or stand still even for a moment for that reason ?

Noble men, who have undertaken to execute certain tasks and are committed to such work with full involvement and determination would feel ashamed if they face situations where they would have to stop or give up such tasks even temporarily.

To execute efficiently the work undertaken or the task committed to is the solemn purpose of life for the class of noble men.

कूर्मस्य for the primordial tortoise, the incarnation of Lord Vishnu वपुषि body भरव्यथा the strain, the pain having borne huge weight किं न is it no there यत् for that reason क्ष्मां the earth एषः he न does not क्षिप्यति let fall

दिनपतेः for the Sun, the maker of the day परिश्रमो fatigue arising out of constant activitiy न no अस्ति there किं वा for that reason सः he निश्चलः without movement न आस्ते does not remain

किं तु it is because स्वमनसा out of own volition, out of ones own will अङ्गीकृतं accepted उत्सृजन् having given up, having abandoned श्लाघ्यो praiseworthy respected जनः people लज्जते become bashful, consider it shameful

प्रतिपन्न undertaken, committed वस्तुषु objects निर्वाहः execution एतद् this हि indee सतां for noble person गोत्र व्रतं solemn undertaking, solemn vow as a class or clan

കിം കൂര്‍മസ്യ ഭരവ്യഥാ ന വപുഷി ക്ഷ്മാം ന ക്ഷിപത്യേഷ യത്

കിംവാ നാസ്തി പരിശ്രമോ ദിനപതേരാസ്തേ ന യന്നിശ്ചലഃ ।

കിംത്വങ്ഗീകൃതമുത്സൃജന്‍ സ്വമനസാ ശ്ലാഘ്യോ ജനോ ലജ്ജതേ

നിര്‍വാഹഃ പ്രതിപന്നവസ്തുഷു സതാമേതദ്ധി ഗോത്രവ്രതം ॥ ൧൩ ॥

ഭര്‍തൃഹരേഃ നീതിശതകേ

ഭഗവാന്‍റെ അവതാരമായ ആദികൂര്‍മ്മം ഭാരമേറിയ ഈ ഭൂമിയെ എല്ലായ്പ്പോഴും സ്വന്തം മുതുകില്‍ ചുമന്നുകൊണ്ടേയിരിക്കുന്നു. അതിന് വേദനയും വിഷമതകളും അക്കാരണം കൊണ്ട് ഉണ്ടാവില്ലെന്ന് കരുതാന്‍ വയ്യ. പക്ഷെ ഒരു നിമിഷം പോലും ആദികൂര്‍മ്മം സ്വന്തം പുറകില്‍ നിന്ന് ഭൂമിയെ താഴെ ഇറക്കുകയില്ല.

ലോകം മുഴുവന്‍ പ്രകാശവും ചൂടും പകര്‍ന്നുകൊണ്ട് സൂര്യന്‍ എന്നും എപ്പോഴും ആകാശത്തില്‍ ചലിച്ചു കൊണ്ടേയിരിക്കുന്നു. അദ്ദേഹത്തിനു തീരാത്ത ഈ യാത്രമൂലമുള്ള ക്ഷീണം ഉണ്ടാവില്ല എന്നും കരുതുന്നുണ്ടോ ? പക്ഷെ ആ സൂര്യന്‍ ഒരു നിമിഷം പോലും അനങ്ങാതെ നില്‍ക്കുന്നില്ല.

അതെ, ഉയര്‍ന്ന ഗുണങ്ങളുള്ള വ്യക്തികള്‍ നിര്‍വഹിച്ചു കൊള്ളാം എന്ന് നിശ്ചയിച്ചു ഉറപ്പിച്ചു ഏറ്റെടുത്ത കാര്യങ്ങള്‍ നിര്‍വഹിക്കുന്നതില്‍ അല്‍പ സമയം വീഴ്ച വന്നാല്‍ പോലും അതില്‍ ഏറെ ലജ്ജിക്കുന്നു. അത്തരം പരാജയം അവര്‍ക്ക് താങ്ങാന്‍ ആവില്ല

ഏറ്റെടുത്ത കാര്യങ്ങള്‍ ഭംഗിയായി തികഞ്ഞ പ്രതിബദ്ധതയോടെയും സ്ഥിരോത്സാഹത്തോടെയും കൂടി ചെയ്തു തീര്‍ക്കുക എന്നത് തരമുള്ള വ്യക്തികളുടെയും അവര്‍ നിറഞ്ഞു നില്‍ക്കുന്ന സമൂഹത്തിന്‍റെയും ജീവിത വ്രതം ആണ്.
