वैद्यं पानरतं नटं कुपठितं मूर्खं परिव्राजकं

योधं कापुरुषं विटं विवयसं स्वाध्यायहीनं द्विजम्।

राज्यं बालनरेन्द्रमन्त्रिरहितं मित्रं च्छलान्वेषि च

भार्यां यौवनगर्वितां पररतां मुञ्चन्ति ये पण्डिताः॥

शुकसप्तति

vaidyaṁ pānarataṁ naṭaṁ kupaṭhitaṁ mūrkhaṁ parivrājakaṁ

yodhaṁ kāpuruṣaṁ viṭaṁ vivayasaṁ svādhyāyahīnaṁ dvijam|

rājyaṁ bālanarendramantrirahitaṁ mitraṁ cchalānveṣi ca

bhāryāṁ yauvanagarvitāṁ pararatāṁ muñcanti ye paṇḍitāḥ||

A person with sufficient education and good sense would simply keep away and would abandon the connection with

A doctor who is addicted to consuming intoxicating drinks

An actor who appears without proper study and without rehearsing his role properly

A person who poses as a recluse or hermit but is actually an idiot

A soldier who is a coward

A senior citizen, an old dandy who, forgetting his advanced age is running after woman in a romantic fashion

A Brahmin or a sholar, who, though born in high family has abandoned the studies and practices in his own avowed tradition

A kingdom which is ruled by a boyish and immature king and which is not having the service of astute ministers

A friend who is not sincere in his words and action who would not hesitate to play false with us

A wife who is too much conceited about her young age and who would not hesitate in extending her favours to other men.

कुपठितं who has not learned, rehearsed well नटं actor

मूर्खं idiotic, having low intellect परिव्राजकं recluse, sannyaasi

कापुरुषं coward, without boldness योधं soldier

विवयसं of the wrong age, advanced in age, old विटं a paramour a peson who runs after sensual pleasures especially pursuing females

स्वाध्याय हीनं bereft of learning in his avowed line of profession द्विजं Brahmin, man born in the family of learned people

बालनरेन्द्र having a boy, an inexperienced youth as king मन्त्रिरहितं without having the services of able ministers राज्यं kingdom

च्छलान्वेषि who talks with deception, who equivocates and cheats मित्रं friend

यौवनगर्वितां arrogant, conceited about own youth पररतां having desire in others other than the wedded spouse भार्यां wife

च too

ये पण्डिताः who are learned and sensible ते मुञ्चन्ति they simply abandon

യോധം കാപുരുഷം വിടം വിവയസം സ്വാധ്യായഹീനം ദ്വിജം।

രാജ്യം ബാലനരേന്ദ്രമന്ത്രിരഹിതം മിത്രം ച്ഛലാന്വേഷി ച

ഭാര്യാം യൌവനഗര്‍വിതാം പരരതാം മുഞ്ചന്തി യേ പണ്ഡിതാഃ॥

വേണ്ടത്ര വിവരവും വിവേകവും ഉണ്ടെങ്കില്‍ ഒരാള്‍ താഴെ പറയുന്ന വ്യക്തികളെയും കാര്യങ്ങളെയും ഒഴിവാക്കണം

ലഹരിയക്ക് അടിമയായി കുടിച്ചു കിടക്കുന്ന വൈദ്യന്‍

വേണ്ടത്ര പരിശീലനവും പഠിപ്പും ഇല്ലാതെ രംഗപ്രവേശനം നടത്തുന്ന നടന്‍

സന്ന്യാസിയുടെ വേഷമിട്ടു നടക്കുന്ന വിഡ്ഢി

ഭീരുവായ പട്ടാളക്കാരന്‍

സ്വന്തം വയസ്സിനു നിരക്കാത്ത ശൃംഗാരപ്രകടനവും ആയി ഞെളിഞ്ഞു നടക്കുന്ന കിഴവന്‍

സ്വന്തം അദ്ധ്യയന ശാഖയില്‍ വേണ്ടത്ര അറിവ് നേടാത്തവനും അത്തരം അറിവ് നേടുന്നതില്‍ ഒരു താല്പര്യം ഇല്ലാത്തവനും ആയ ബ്രാഹ്മണന്‍, പണ്ഡിതന്‍

പ്രായവും പക്വതയും കഴിവും വളരെ കുറഞ്ഞ രാജാവു ഭരിക്കുന്നതും അതെ സമയും ആ രാജാവിനെ വേണ്ട വിധത്തില്‍ സഹായിക്കാന്‍ കഴിവുള്ള മന്ത്രിമാര്‍ ഇല്ലാത്തതും ആയ രാജ്യം

ചക്കരവാക്കു പറയുകയും പിന്നില്‍ നിന്ന് വഞ്ചിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്ന ചങ്ങാതി

സ്വന്തം യൌവനത്തില്‍ അഹങ്കാരവും പിന്നെ പരപുരുഷന്മാരോടു താത്പര്യവും ഉള്ള ഭാര്യ
