जीवतोर्वाक्यकरणात् क्षपाहे भूरिभोजनात्।
छायायां पिण्डपात्राच्च त्रिभिरेव सुतः सुतः॥

jīvatorvākyakaraṇāt kṣapāhe bhūribhojanāt|
chāyāyāṁ piṇḍapātrācca tribhireva sutaḥ sutaḥ||

A son is a genuine son worth his name only if he fulfils the three duties, namely
1 He obeys and acts according to the desires and orders of the parents during their lifetime
2 He offers sumptuous food to the learned men and needy (by way of Sraaddha ceremony) on days considered as important to the departed souls and their memories
3 He offers balls of cereal and rice.. called pindas, in Gaya, under the shadow of the Akshaya Vata.. the eternal peepul tree in honour of the departed parents
ജീവതോര്വാക്യകരണാത് ക്ഷപാഹേ ഭൂരിഭോജനാത്।
ഛായായാം പിണ്ഡപാത്രാച്ച ത്രിഭിരേവ സുതഃ സുതഃ॥

ഒരു മകന് താന് മകന് എന്ന വാക്കിന് അര്ഹാനാവണം എങ്കില് താഴെ പറയുന്ന മൂന്നു കടമകള് ഒരു വിട്ടുവീഴ്ചയും കൂടാതെ നിറവേറ്റുക തന്നെ വേണം
൧ മാതാവും പിതാവും പൂര്വികരും ജീവിച്ചിരിക്കുന്ന സമയം വരെ അവരുടെ വാക്കുകളും നിര്ദ്ദേശങ്ങളും അനുസരിച്ച് അവര്ക്ക് ഒരു തരത്തിലുള്ള വിഷമങ്ങളും ഉണ്ടാവാത്ത വിധം ജീവിക്കണം
൨ അച്ഛനോ അമ്മയോ വേര്പിരിഞ്ഞു കഴിഞ്ഞാല് സൂര്യചന്ദ്രന്മാരുടെ ചലനത്തിനനുസരിച്ച് അവരുടെ ഓര്മ്മക്കായി വിധിക്കപ്പെട്ട ദിവസങ്ങളില് സുഭിക്ഷമായ ഭോജനം നല്കി ശ്രാദ്ധം ഊട്ടണം
൩. ഗയയില് ജനാര്ദ്ദന സന്നിധിയില് അക്ഷയ വടത്തിന്റെ ച്ഛായയില് വിട്ടുപിരിഞ്ഞ പിതൃക്കള്ക്ക് വേണ്ടി പിണ്ഡം സമര്പ്പിച്ചു അവര്ക്ക് നിത്യമുക്തി നേടിക്കൊടുക്കണം
