My dear one, the mind sinks to lower depths when it get associated with lowly people. When the mind comes in contact with minds of average merits, it also behaves at an average level matching the mediocrity of the interacting mind. When the same mind is fortunate to have the proximity and interaction with eminent and noble minds, it too attains nobility and pre-eminence.
In the case of people who are endowed with nobility, attainment of even a little more merit becomes praiseworthy. It is like a tiny drop of oil falling on the surface of sweet, clean, pure water. The tiny speck of oil spreads all over the surface of water
(We know that if water is impure and its surface is contaminated then the oil falling on its surface cannot spread so freely)

The quotes are from Mahabharata, and they are quoted in Sarasamuccayam too. Sarasamuccayam is a compendium of some quotes from the epic Mahabharata, and the text has its origin in Bali, Indonesia, and it is originally written in Balinese Language.

her brains and his beauty

There is a famous snippet which has done the rounds in literary circles for a long Period..
Once the great playwright and satirist GBS (Geroge Bernara Shaw) met the contemporary celibrity dancer and stage performer Isdora Duncan..
The lady was quite conscious and was even boastful about her own beauty..
She was making a point that if a child were born to GBS and her..
She meant that the child would inherit her gorgeous beauty and the superior brains of GBS..
GBS was quick to shoot back a question as to what would happen if the child inherited his beauty and her brains..
The lessons are obvious..
One should not try to show off in the presence of acute minds..Some minds can see things from very different angles.. which ordinary mortals could never do.
The really acute minds have the capacity to laugh at all absurdities including absurdities arising in those minds themselves..

A tiny shining fish, innocent and poor, was caught by a rowing fisherman. The fish slipped out of his tough hand but was caught in the fishermans net. It wriggled out of the maze of the net perhaps by the force of temporary luck, but then strightaway fell into the mouth of a stork eagerly waiting, and was gobbled up by the bird. Tell me, if your fate Is crooked, how on earth can you find any success in any of your avowed projects ?

If a normal and pious person keeps company with or does  notavoid association with evil fellow the sins and setbacks that are due to the evil fellow would visit the other fellow through merely as a consequence of association. See, if wet and dry twigs are stacked with dry ones and exposed to fire, the wet ones too get burned to ashes. So it would be prudent for good people not to get mixed up with shady fellows.

Thus he betrays and shows three different colours according to circumstances as if he were a chameleon or wild lizard.

Respectability or absence of it are too subjective

Respectability or absence of it are too subjective .
No one can define that in absolute terms. What is respectable for one person may not be same for another.
So sitting on assumed high moral pedestal and passing judgments is just an action.bordering on arrogance.
We tend to define as right and respectable what we think or assume as a majority group as respectable.
That is not simply fair.
Even assumed knowledge standards and performance standards become coloured, prejudiced or opinionated that way.
If a situation can arise where things get evaluated on the basis of what is said rather than who said it.. then alone there is at least a semblance of equity and fairness.
Normally people are driven either by ego or hero worship.
But all need not be like that.
Note ven Jesus or Krishna or Gandhi can ever define what is respectable.
Each one is entitled to his own views.
But when anyone tries to flaunt his view as the right..and only right.. unfairness raises its ugly head

the noble person never talk calumny behind your back

Oh King, the company of noble and classy persons
Who never spread scandals about you behind your back
Who are ever eager to lend helping hands to people in distress
Who never get contemptuous about you just because the long association with them causes boredom
Should be sought for ever
He is the really learned person
Who never becomes arrogant and vain
Just because he has come by a lot of money
Just because he has learned a lot and has acquired some respectability and influence
And who just moves around as a simple person in spite of his praiseworthy attainments.

We Indians always believed in rejoicing and even suffering in close company

If there are no close relatives close friends and people who belong to our own clan, community, region, state and not even who would share this beautiful earth life is meaningless.

There is neither glory nor happiness.

And when we are physically or mentally down a relative or friend or a man of our place or nation would make all the difference

We Indians always believed in enjoying and even suffering in close company.

Yes, when things are happy and peaceful we will even invite some minor or even major quarrels and would bicker cringe sow little jealousy and all.

But that is only the shell or skin.
Our core craves for affection and camaraderie
We pray
“Let us all live for 100 autumns
Let us see and enjoy together for hundred years
Let us be in the happy company of all for hundred autumns
Let us give happiness to others all together for thousand years
Let us all travel and explore together for hundred autumns"
This is the Vedic prayer we chant every midday

even rude behaviour could be tolerated if the intention is to follow the righteous path

dharmo'nveṣyaśca paruṣe sa ca nāsti viṣaṁ ca tat||
sārasamuccaye 334

When you hear extremely sweet words, the first thing you should do is to verify whether there is
dishonesty in such words. If those words are not dishonest and insincere then they are like
 amrutham or elixir.
In the same manner you should search for righteousness even in rude and gruff behaviour. If
there is no trace of righteousness in such rudeness, then such harshness is simply poisonous.
The idea is that one should be on his guard against sweet words which convey false messages.
However, when words are sweet and honest too, then they are just like nectar.
At the same time even if the behaviour of a person is rather rude and unfriendly, such behaviour
could be tolerated if the intention behind is just to follow the righteous path. However if a fellow
is rude and is inclined to tread the path of unrighteousness too, he should be shunned like poison.
