another gem from chanakya

Our earnest attempt should be to give the girl of the family in marriage to a groom from a family of blemishless reputation.  The boys of the family should be given education at any cost.  When it comes to our enemies it would befit us to put them in all sorts of sorrows and embarrassment so that they will be weakened.  And a dear friend should be always given advice and  all possible help in the righteous way according to dharmas.

We Indians were always sticklers to pedigree.  A man born in a good family cannot go astray, this is our honest belief and one has to be really happy to note that this fact has been proved right over centuries. However wealthy and affluent our family is, if we fail to give proper education to the children ( now we can include the girls also)  they embark upon life with an insurmountable handicap,   The statement that the enemy should be put to sorrow is more applicable in strategies for war, from which Chanakya can never keep his mind off.  It need not be put to practice in our day to day transactions .  And most important, when we see that a valuable friend is deviating from the path of righteousness, it is incumbent on us to put him in the right track through advice, mental and material support.
