The life of  noble men is a self taught penance sitting on the edge of a sword (asidhaaraavratam).  They give help to others in secret.  They are very fussy and careful while giving respect to guest who have come to their house.  They will keep absolute silence about some nice things they have done for others.  But they will be very lavish in praising in public the good deeds of others. They are indifferent to wealth. And they present even the criticism of the deeds of others in a manner that would cause no hurt.  The poet wonders who taught these people such a strict code of conduct.
