On Gita Govindarm...

It is the monumental creation of Poet Jayadeva..
The ultimate in lyrical poetry in Sanskrit..

The compilation has two parts.. one the Ashtapadis or verses in eight padas with prescribed musical notes.. there at 24 of them.. And there are other slokas and descriptive semi prose verses too.. it is believed that the literary work is the combined creation of Jayadeva and his patron king (Lakshmana Sena).. who penned the other verrses other than the 24 Ashtapadis..

But such differentiation is only a traditional belief..


When compared to works like Kadambari etc.. Geethagovindam is not very complicated..

The words and style are uncomplicated

I have studied the whole work and it was my intention to translate all the Ashtapadis..

But some of them are rather too intimate and abounding in Sringara Rasa..

I thought I should stop it..

Geetha Govindam can be found with lesser frequency in other parts of India too like the west.. It can be heard in Andhra and Karnataka.. too. apart from Kerala , Bengal, and the Seven Sister states and Orissa too..
