We should definitely share any food prepared at home with the housemaid or worker, and that too in a dignified way.
In some Brahmin households of the old, before giving dosa for the veettuvelaiikari, the mami would roll the food over sandy floor-thinking that the velakkari should not get the same standard of food.. Let such mindset die..
The heart should move and the hands should give... the salt water flowing from the eye is of no use to anyone.,so also the air that escapes the mouth by way of words.
I am saying precisely that in a more sharp way.. I know a substantial number among us will only shed Crocodile's tear.. In Palakkad from old times onward, the rice and side dishes preapared at home would be given to the housemaid in part.. she would take the things home..If some children come along with her, they would be given food at home itself.. these were all unwritten rules.. Even the vaticha kanji and kazuneer would be poured to some old attukkal placed in front of the house so that stray cows can take that food..
The namboothiri illams were even more noble.. Usually before closing the padippura for the night, the senior Karanavar would come out and ask.. athazha pashnikkaarundo? അത്താഴപഷ്ണിക്കാരുണ്ടോ anyone starving without taking nigh food outside.. and it was considered a duty that no one should be present around the household with a starving tummy.
