A very interesting quote from Nitishatakam of Bhartruhari
There is hardly anyone in this world who would not fall for some sort of bribe or enticement.
The poet asks
Who is there that would not fall to your side if his mouth is fed with some morsels of solid cooked grain ?
Even the lifeless percussion instrument gives very sweet sound when its face is amply smeared with paste of cooked rice
It is a usual sight that mridangam players apply paste made of cooked rice on the leather surface of the instrument to ensure that it is supple and gives quality sound and beats..
Just like that when people around you are fed well, they will sing your praise.. that too as long as they are fed..
കോ ന യാതി വശം ലോകേ മുഖം പിണ്ഡേന പൂരിതഃ।
മൃദംഗോ മുഖലേപേന കരോതി മധുരം ധ്വനിം॥
നീതിശതകം ഭര്തൃഹരേഃ ൧൦൫
വായ നിറച്ചു ചോറുണ്ടകള്‍ കൊടുത്താല്‍ ആരും നമ്മുടെ കൂടെ വന്നുപോകും
കഞ്ഞിപ്പശ തേയ്ക്കുമ്പോള്‍ മൃദംഗം പോലും മധുരസ്വരം ഉണ്ടാക്കുന്നത്‌ കണ്ടിട്ടില്ലേ?
ആഹാരത്തിനും അതുപോലുള്ള പരിഗണനകള്‍ക്കും വശംവദരാകാത്തവര്‍ ആരുമില്ല എന്ന സന്ദേശം ആണ് ഭര്‍തൃഹരി നീതിശതകത്തില്‍ നല്‍കുന്നത്.
അതെ, നമ്മള്‍ എന്തെങ്കിലും വായില്‍ ഊട്ടിക്കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്നതുവരെ ചിലര്‍ നമ്മോടൊപ്പം ഉണ്ടാവും .
കൊടുക്കുന്നത് ശാപ്പാടോ കാശോ എന്തും ആവാം.
പക്ഷെ പലപ്പോഴും ഈ കൈമടക്കുകള്‍ നിര്‍ത്തുമ്പോള്‍ ചില വിദ്വാന്മാര്‍ പഴയതൊക്കെ മറന്നു തിരിഞ്ഞു കുത്തും.
