अपां निधिं वारिभिरर्चयन्ति ।
दीपेन सूर्यं प्रतिबोधयन्ति ॥
ताभ्यां तयोः किं परिपूर्णता स्याद्।
भक्त्या हि तुष्यन्ति महानुभावाः ॥
महासुभाषित संग्रहे (1974) सुभाषितरत्नभाण्डागारे च

dīpena sūryaṃ pratibodhayanti ॥
tābhyāṃ tayoḥ kiṃ paripūrṇatā syād।
bhaktyā hi tuṣyanti mahānubhāvāḥ ॥

We perform certain actions symbolically.. That action might look even silly. But the spirit behind such action makes all the difference..
The really wise and learned persons look beyond gestures and appreciate the spirit behind it.
The subhashitam above is illustrative of this idea
People worship the ocean which is the final repository of all the water available on the face of the earth by pouring small quantities of holy waters from various rivers
Similarly people worship the sun by showing lighted lamps before him in his honour.
Does the small quantities of water, or the lighted wick enhance the quality of the ocean or the sun as the case may be ?
No, but they would receive the worship, because great people are pleased by the devotion and affection behind the actions, more than the physical action itself
We see this in our lives all the time.. A father brings a full box of chocolate toffy for his boy.. The boy grabs the box eagerly and then offers a single toffy to the father.. The father is very happy.. It is the father who has purchased the sweet and he can do that many times over. But when a small piece out of what he has himself given comes back from the child, the father is happy.. It is the love of the child that really matters

നാം ചെയ്യുന്ന പലേ കാര്യങ്ങളും പ്രതീകാതമാകമായി മാത്രമാണ്. ചെയ്യുന്ന കാര്യം നിസ്സാരമായി തോന്നാം. പക്ഷെ ആ കാര്യത്തിന്റെ പിന്നില്‍ ഒളിഞ്ഞിരിക്കുന്ന സ്നേഹവും ഭക്തിയും കരുതലും ആ പ്രവൃത്തിയെ ഉയര്‍ന്ന തലങ്ങളില്‍ എത്തിക്കുന്നു
ഇക്കാര്യം വ്യക്തമാക്കുന്നതാണ് മുകളില്‍ ഉദ്ധരിച്ച സുഭാഷിതം
ഭൂമുഖത്തുള്ള ജലത്തിന്റെയെല്ലാം സ്ഥായിയായ ഇരിപ്പിടമായ സമുദ്രത്തിനു നദികളില്‍ നിന്ന് കൊണ്ടുവന്ന ചെറിയ അളവിലുള്ള തീര്‍ത്ഥം സമപ്പിക്കുന്നു ചില ഭക്തന്മാര്‍.
പ്രകാശത്തിന്‍ റെഅത്യുജ്ജ്വല സ്രോതസ്സായ സൂര്യന്‍ ഉദിച്ചുയരുമ്പോള്‍ ആ ദേവന് ചില ഭക്തര്‍ എണ്ണവിളക്കുകള്‍ വീശി ദീപാരാധന നടത്തുന്നുണ്ടു മറ്റു ചിലര്‍.
ഈ ജലമോ, ദീപമോ സമുദ്രത്തിന്റെയോ സൂര്യന്‍റെയോ പ്രഭാവത്തെ വര്‍ദ്ധിപ്പിക്കാന്‍ അശക്തരാണ്. പക്ഷെ ആ മഹത്തുക്കള്‍ ഈ പൂജകളെ സന്തോഷത്തോടെ സ്വീകരിക്കുന്നു. മഹാന്മാര്‍ക്ക് ഭക്തിയും സ്നേഹവും തിരിച്ചറിയാനും അവയെ ബഹുമാനിക്കുവാനും ഉള്ള സന്മനസ്സ് ഇപ്പോഴും ഉണ്ടാവും
നമ്മുടെ നിത്യ ജീവിതത്തിലും ഇതുപോലുള്ള സംഭവങ്ങള്‍ ധാരാളം കാണാം. ഒരു അച്ഛന്‍ തന്റെ കുഞ്ഞിനു ഒരുപാടു മിട്ടായി കൊണ്ടുവന്നു കൊടുക്കുന്നു. കുഞ്ഞു അതുമുഴുവന്‍ തട്ടിയെടുത്ത ശേഷം ഒരു ചെറിയ മിട്ടായി അച്ഛനു തന്നെ കൊടുക്കുന്നു. അതു വായിലിട്ടു അച്ഛന്‍ സന്തോഷത്തിന്റെ പാരമ്യത്തില്‍ എത്തുന്നു.. ഇവിടെ കൊടുക്കുന്ന മിട്ടായിയുടെ സ്വാദ് അല്ല പക്ഷെ അച്ഛനും മകനും തമ്മിലുള്ള സ്നേഹമാണ് ആ രംഗത്തിന്റെ മാധുര്യം കൂട്ടുന്നതെന്ന് ഓര്‍ക്കണം.
