कार्यापेक्षो जनः प्रायः प्रीतिमाविष्करोत्यलम्। 

लोभार्थी शौण्डिकः शष्पैर्मेषं पुष्णाति पेशलैः॥४५ 

कुसुमदेवकृते दृष्टान्तकलिकाशतके॥ 

kāryāpekṣo janaḥ prāyaḥ prītimāviṣkarotyalam| 

lobhārthī śauṇḍikaḥ śaṣpairmeṣaṁ puṣṇāti peśalaiḥ||45 

kusumadevakṛte dṛṣṭāntakalikāśatake|| 

Human beings are opportunists and time servers as a matter of rule.. Maybe there are rare exceptions.. I wonder 

A couplet from Dhrishtaantakalikaashatakam of poet Kusumadeva seems to reinforce this idea.. 

Meaning of the saying

Indeed, people develop liking or pretend affection to others only when they have spotted some benefit or advantage arising from such show of interest. 

If a wayward distiller and drunkard is seen feeding a goat with tender grass, it is very easy to see the reason.. The agenda would be just to slaughter the goat or sell it for slaughter ( and the feeding would fatten the goat and increase its utility as food.)

Most friendships and show of love are like that.. 

The surface of earth is filled to the brim with time servers.. 

Then that is the rule of life.. 

We have to take it.. and live with it..

സാധാരണഗതിയില്‍ ആളുകള്‍ തികച്ചും സ്വാര്‍ത്ഥരും അവസരവാദികളും ആണ്. ഒരുപക്ഷെ ഇതിനു അപവാടങ്ങളി ഉണ്ടാവാം പക്ഷെ അത് വിരളമായേ സംഭവിക്കൂ.

കുസുമദേവ കവിയുടെ ദൃഷ്ടാന്തകലികാശതകം എന്ന കൃതിയില്‍ നിന്നെടുത്ത ഒരു സുഭാഷിതമാണ് മുകളില്‍ ചേര്‍ത്തിരിക്കുന്നത. 

അര്‍ഥം 

ഒരു വ്യക്തിയിലോ വസ്തുവിലോ തനിക്കു പ്രയോജനപ്പെടുന്ന വല്ലതും കാണുകയോ, അത്തരം പ്രയോജനങ്ങള്‍ ഉണ്ടെന്ന സൂചന ലഭിക്കുകയോ ചെയ്‌താല്‍ ആളുകള്‍ അങ്ങിനെയുള്ള വസ്തുക്കളോടും ആളുകളോടും ഏറെ അടുപ്പവും താല്‍പര്യവും പ്രകടിപ്പിക്കും.

ചാരായം വാറ്റുകാരാനും മുഴുക്കുടിയനും ആയ ഒരാള്‍ ഒരു ആടിനോട്‌ വളരെ സ്നേഹം കാണിക്കുകയും ആടിന്നു തിരഞ്ഞെടുത്ത തളിരിലകള്‍ കൊടുക്കുകയും ആണെന്ന് കണ്ടാല്‍ ഉടനെ ഉറപ്പിക്കാം, മൂപ്പര്‍ ആ ആടിനെ കശാപ്പു ചെയ്ത് ആഹാരമാക്കുവാനുള്ള പരിപാടി ഒരുക്കുകയാണ് എന്ന്. ധാരാളം പച്ചില തീറ്റിച്ചാല്‍ ആട് വേഗം തടിച്ചു കൊഴുക്കും എന്നാണു അയാളുടെ പ്രതീക്ഷ. 

മിക്കവാറും എല്ലാ സ്നേഹപ്രകടനങ്ങളും സൌഹൃദങ്ങളും എല്ലാം ഇതുപോലെയൊക്കെ തന്നെയാണ്, 

ഈ ഭൂമി അവസരവാദികളെക്കൊണ്ട് നിറഞ്ഞു കവിയുകയാണ്.

പക്ഷെ അത് ഒരു ജീവിത യാഥാര്‍ഥ്യം ആണെന്ന് മനസ്സിലാക്കുകയും അങ്ങിനെയുള്ളവരോടോപ്പം ജീവിച്ചു പോവുകയും ചെയ്താലേ രക്ഷയുള്ളൂ.
