अविनीतस्य या विद्या सा चिरं नैव तिष्ठति

अविनीतस्य या विद्या सा चिरं नैव तिष्ठति |

मर्कटस्य गले बद्धा मणीनां मालिका यथा ||

हारं वक्षसि केनापि दत्तमज्ञेन मर्कटः l

लेढि जिघ्रति संक्षिप्यः करोत्युन्नतमासनम् ll

avinītasya yā vidyā sā ciraṃ naiva tiṣṭhati |

markaṭasya gale baddhā maṇīnāṃ mālikā yathā ||

hāraṃ vakṣasi kenāpi dattamajñena markaṭaḥ l

leḍhi jighrati saṃkṣipyaḥ karotyunnatamāsanam ll

Bhaamineevilaasam.

The knowledge and skill acquired by a person who is ill mannered would not remain with him for very long, nor would it do any good for him or for others. It would be like a string of gems tied around the neck of a monkey.

If a string of peals is given to a monkey, without knowing what to do with it, the monkey would first lick it with its tongue to see whether it is tasty to eat, then it would try to smell it with its nose, and finally it would place it under its hind part and would sit over it..

The two couplets quoted above come from two different Sanskrit works, Padyatharangirni and Bhaminivilasam..

If something really worthy, be it money, or knowledge or skill, falls into the hands of a person who has no skill or sense of discretion, such worthy things would surely go waste. Not only that, such valuable possessions would become counter productive too..

അവിനീതസ്യ യാ വിദ്യാ സാ ചിരം നൈവ തിഷ്ഠതി |

മര്‍ക്കടസ്യ ഗലേ ബദ്ധാ മണീനാം മാലികാ യഥാ ||

ഹാരം വക്ഷസി കേനാപി ദത്തമജ്ഞേന മര്‍ക്കടഃ l

ലേഢി ജിഘ്രതി സംക്ഷിപ്യഃ കരോത്യുന്നതമാസനം ll

അച്ചടക്കവും വകതിരിവുമില്ലാത്ത ഒരാളെ വല്ലതും പഠിപ്പിച്ചാല്‍ ആ വിദ്യയും കഴിയും അയാള്‍ ഏറെക്കാലമൊന്നും നിലനിര്‍ത്തുകയും ഉപയോഗപ്പെടുത്തുകയും ചെയ്യില്ല. കുരങ്ങന്റെ കയ്യില്‍ വന്നുചേര്‍ന്ന മാല പോലെയാവും ആ വിദ്യയുടെ ഗതി.. എങ്ങിനെ ഉപയോഗിക്കണം എന്നറിയാതെ അത് വ്യര്‍ത്ഥമായിപ്പോകും അല്ലെങ്കില്‍ ദുരുപയോഗപ്പെടുത്തപ്പെടും

ഒരു കുരങ്ങന്‍റെ കയ്യില്‍ മാല കിട്ടിയാല്‍ അത് തിന്നാനുള്ള എന്തെങ്കിലുമാണോ എന്ന് കരുതി അവന്‍ അത് നാവു കൊണ്ട് നക്കി നോക്കും. ഒന്നും മനസ്സിലാവാതെ അവന്‍ അത് മണത്തുനോക്കും പിന്നെ വല്ല മരക്കൊമ്പിലും കയറി, ആ മാല ആസനതതിന്നടിയില്‍ വച്ച് അതിന്‍റെ മുകളില്‍ വെറുതേയിരിക്കും

രണ്ടു സംസ്കൃത കൃതികളായ പദ്യ തരംഗിണി, ഭാമിനീവിലാസം എന്നിവയില്‍ നിന്ന് എടുത്ത ശ്ലോകങ്ങളാണ് മുകളില്‍

മലയാളത്തില്‍ “ കുരങ്ങന്റെ കയ്യില്‍ കൊടുത്ത പൂമാല പോലെ” എന്ന പഴഞ്ചൊല്ല് പ്രസിദ്ധമാണല്ലോ.

കിട്ടിയത് ശരിയായ വിധത്തില്‍ കൈകാര്യം ചെയ്യാനുള്ള കഴിവും പാകതയും ഉള്ള വ്യക്തിയുടെ കൈയിലല്ലാതെ എത്തിപ്പെടുന്ന അറിവും വിദ്യാഭ്യാസവും എല്ലാം ഉപയോഗശൂന്യമാവും, അല്ലെങ്കില്‍ വിപരീതഫലം നല്‍കിയെന്നും വരാം
