IMHO religion, deities and rituals just create the environment for faith of sorts to develop..It is just like a house where someone can live, and cannot be equated to the person who occupies or intends to occupy that house..
In the commentary to Brahmasutras even at the preface Shankara declares that the authority of Vedas etc as the final action point would arise only till one has not yet crossed the threshold of Brahma Jnanam..
What is gospel truth for a boy when he is studying LKG may not be of much convincing value for the same boy who reaches a post graduate or doctoral level.. So ultimately we are all just searching for truth but we are yet to meet someone who has realized or reached the ultimate truth..
