The inherent worth

मणिर्लुण्ठति पादाग्रे काचः शिरसि धार्यते।

क्रयविक्रयवेलायां काचः काचः मणिर्मणिः॥

चाणक्य नीत्यां १५-१७

maṇirluṇṭhati pādāgre kācaḥ śirasi dhāryate|

krayavikrayavelāyāṁ kācaḥ kācaḥ maṇirmaṇiḥ||

cāṇakya nītyāṁ 15-17

The inherent worth of any object cannot be judged either by the manner such object is found, or by the treatment it suffers at the hands of the owner.

A man is walking along a street. A precious stone stuck to the ground strikes his toe and the person kicks back in anger and collects the stone. He finda a piece of shining glass too in the same path.. Being attracted by the apparent shine, he wears the glass on his head as an ornament.

However, if he is in need of money and takes the stone and the piece of glass to a jeweller with a view to sell it, the jeweller would give big price for the stone, but would ignore the piece of glass altogether.. When it comes to exchange for a price, the gem stone is gem stone and a piece of glass is just a piece of glass.

The translation of the slokam is

A precious stone disturbs a person by striking his toes, and a piece of glass adorns his head as an ornament.. But when it comes to sale in the market, the precious stone is precious and the piece of glass is just a worthless tinklet.

Of course, people fail to understand the real value of many objects and persons too, and treats the good things in a nasty manner and give respect to people or things which do not deserve any such respect..

മണിര്‍ലുണ്ഠതി പാദാഗ്രേ കാചഃ ശിരസി ധാര്യതേ।

ക്രയവിക്രയവേലായാം കാചഃ കാചഃ മണിര്മണിഃ॥

ഒരു വസ്തു എവിടെ നിന്ന് കണ്ടു കിട്ടി എന്നത് കൊണ്ടോ, അതിനെ അതിന്റെ ഉടമസ്ഥന്‍ എങ്ങിനെ കൈകാര്യം ചെയ്യുന്നു എന്നതുകൊണ്ടോ ആ വസ്തുവിന്റെ നൈസര്‍ഗ്ഗികമായ മൂല്യം ഇല്ലാതാവുകയില്ല.

ഒരാള്‍ ഒരു പാതയിലൂടെ നടക്കുമ്പോള്‍ മണ്ണില്‍ പൂണ്ടുകിടക്കുന്ന ഒരു വിലയേറിയ രത്നത്തില്‍ അയാളുടെ കാല്‍ വിരല്‍ മുട്ടുന്നു. ദേഷ്യത്തോടെ അയാള്‍ അതിനെ ചവിട്ടിയ ശേഷം എടുത്തു കൊണ്ട് പോകുന്നു. അതേസമയം അയാള്‍ക്ക്‌ ഒരു തിളങ്ങുന്ന കുപ്പിക്കഷണവും കയ്യില്‍ കിട്ടുന്നു. അതിന്റെ തിളക്കം കണ്ടു അയാള്‍ അത് ഒരു ആഭരണമായി തലയില്‍ ചൂടുന്നു.

പക്ഷെ അയാള്‍ക്ക് ഒരു ആവശ്യം വരികയും ഈ രത്നവും കുപ്പിച്ചില്ലും ഒന്നിച്ചു എടുത്തുകൊണ്ടു അയാള്‍ ആഭരണക്കടയില്‍ വില്കാന്‍ ചെല്ലുകയും ആണെങ്കില്‍, രത്നത്തിന് വലിയ വില കിട്ടും.. കുപ്പിച്ചില്ലിനു ഒരു വിലയും കിട്ടില്ല. വില്‍ക്കുന്ന സമയത്ത് രത്നം രത്നം തന്നെയാണ്. കുപ്പിക്കഷണം വെറും കുപ്പിക്കഷണവും

ശ്ലോകത്തിരെ പരിഭാഷ.

ഒരു രത്നക്കല്ല് ഒരാളുടെ കാല്‍ വിരലില്‍ തട്ടി അയാളെ വേദനിപ്പിക്കുന്നു. ഒരു കുപ്പിച്ചില്ലിന്‍ന്റെ തിളക്കം കണ്ടു അയാള്‍ അതിരെ തലയില്‍ ചൂടുന്നു. പക്ഷെ ചന്തയില്‍ വില്‍ക്കാന്‍ ചെല്ലുമ്പോള്‍ രത്നക്കല്ല് രത്നക്കല്ലും കുപ്പിച്ചില്ല് വെറും കുപ്പിച്ചില്ലും ആണ്.

പലപ്പോഴും ആളുകള്‍ ഒരു വസ്തുവിന്റെയോ വ്യക്തിയുടെയോ ശരിയായ വില മനസ്സിലാക്കാറില്ല. അവര്‍ ബഹുമാനാര്‍ഹരോട് അവജ്ഞയോടുകൂടിയും ഒരു വിലയും ഇല്ലാത്തവരോട് ബഹുമാനത്തോടുകൂടിയും പെരുമാറുന്നതായി കാണാം.
