The importance of Sradham and other offerings to the departed souls is described in these quotes from kurma, aditya and markandeya puranaas..
The spirits of the departed kin float around in the air observe and yearn for the rites being performed for them.. They wait with intense hunger and thirst right from the Sunrise to the setting of the sun. When the Sun sets, if nothing is offered, the pitrus and prethas leave slowly, sighing in despair and sorrow, talking ill of the people of their clan who are alive on earth. If one does not offer oblations at least with water and leafy vegetables, the pitrus eagerly waiting for such offerings leave, after cursing those who failed them.
In a clan where offerings to the pitrus are not made, no valorous offspring will be born, no healthy child will be born , no child will be born to live the full life prescribed by vedas, and there can never be prosperity and welfare in that clan.
Every person even with meagre resources should offer respects and food for their departed elders.
If a person can manage to obtain even a handful of rice, that too from another household through begging and manages to keep his body and soul together, he should offer Sraddham from out of such material for his forefathers.
If a person is surviving by selling himself and his services.. even like a slave , he should offer Sraddham to his forefathers, using the material he earns through rightful means..
So it is the duty of one who is alive and is able to manage some thing for himself to offer a part of what he earned to his departed elders.. living as spirits.. or pretas and pitrus..
