If education and training are for one’s own livelihood, there is nothing wrong about such pursuit

तपो न कल्कोऽद्ध्ययनं न कल्कः

स्वाभाविको वेदविधिर्न कल्कःI

प्रसह्य वित्ताहरणं न कल्कः

तान्येव भावोपहतानि कल्कःII

महाभारते आदि पर्वणि

Engaging in penance or activities involving self-mortification are not reprehensible or of inferior worth, unless the motive behind them are to ensure destruction of anyone else. If education and training are pursued with an object to develop skills and to earn one’s own livelihood, there is nothing wrong about such pursuit. If rituals and religious practices are followed strictly according to scriptural dictates, no taint could be attached to such activity too. But if the penance, the education, the work or the practice of rituals are pursued in directions which are not too straightforward and are intended to cause prejudice or damage to others then such pursuits are definitely sinful and tainted.

തപോ ന കൽകൊഽദ്ധ്യയനം ന കൽകഃ

സ്വാഭാവികോ വേദവിധിർന കൽകഃ

പ്രസഹ്യ വിത്താഹരണം ന കൽകഃ

താന്യേവ ഭാവോപഹതാനി കൽകഃ

(മഹാഭാരതം - ആദിപർവ്വം 1 - 275)

തപസ്സു ചെയ്യുന്നത് മറ്റുള്ളവര്‍ക്ക് ഹാനി വരുത്താന്‍ ഉദ്ദേശിച്ചല്ലെങ്കില്‍ പാപമോ നിഷിദ്ധമോ അല്ല. പഠനവും വിദ്യാഭ്യാസവും (സ്വന്തം ജീവനോപാധിക്കോ, അറിവ് വളര്‍ത്തുന്നതിനോ ആവുമ്പോള്‍) ദോഷകരമല്ല. വേദവിധി അനുസരിച്ചുള്ള സാധാരണ നിത്യകര്‍മ്മങ്ങളും പ്രയോഗങ്ങളും ഒരിക്കലും പാപകരമാവില്ല. സ്വയം അദ്ധ്വാനിച്ചോ കുലത്തൊഴില്‍ ചെയ്തോ ധനം സമ്പാദിക്കുന്നതിലും ഒരു വിധത്തിലുള്ള പാപമോ അപാകതയോ ഇല്ല. പക്ഷെ തപസ്സോ, അദ്ധ്യയനമോ, വൈദികപ്രയോഗങ്ങളോ, ചെയ്യുന്ന തൊഴിലോ നേർവഴിയിലല്ലാതെയും, മറ്റുള്ളവര്‍ക്ക് ദോഷം ചെയ്യാനുള്ള കുത്സിത ഭാവങ്ങളോടുകൂടിയും ആവുമ്പോള്‍ അവ പാപപങ്കിലമാവുന്നു.
