उपचारः कर्तव्यो यावदनुत्पन्नसौहृदः पुरुषः।
उत्पन्नसौहृदानामुपचारः कैतवं भवति॥
सुभाषितरत्नभाण्डागारे॥
upacāraḥ kartavyo yāvadanutpannasauhṛdaḥ puruṣaḥ|
utpannasauhṛdānāmupacāraḥ kaitavaṁ bhavati||

A lot of formalities and gestures to please a person are necessary till real friendship has been stuck with a friend.. or if the friendship is meant only to be artificial and opportunistic
If real friendship has developed between persons, then such formalities become superficial, artificial and often false of contrived and unnecessary too..
Formalities between friends can be a killer of the true spirit of friendship..

तावत् till that tie
उपचारः a lot of formal
gestures
कर्तव्यः should be gone through
उत्पन्न सौह्रुदानां when friendship is established

कैतवं भवति become artificial, ornamental..
