The meaning of the subhashitam is
If a person does not spend his money well for the benefit of Gods, of learned people, for the relatives or at least for his own comforts, that money would be destroyed in due course by floods and similar calamities or would be taken as taxes by the kings or would be forcibly taken away by enemies and thieves..
It is a fact of life that we are very diligent and industrious in earning and keeping our money. But we do not know well either to spend it properly or to keep it safe. We should realize that money is valuable only as long as it could bring benefit to us. In fact hoarded money can invite attacks from thieves or enemies. Besides, the Government would be always lurking behind looking for taxes..

സമ്പാദിച്ച പണം ദൈവീക കാര്യങ്ങള്ക്കായോ വിദ്വാന്മാരുടെയും സാത്വികന്മാരുടേയും രക്ഷക്കായോ ബന്ധുക്കളുടെ കൂടെ നല്ലവണ്ണം ഉപയോഗിക്കാനായോ അല്ലെങ്കില് സ്വന്തം സുഖസൌകര്യങ്ങള്ക്കായോ ഉപയോഗിച്ചില്ലെങ്കില് ആ പണം പ്രളയം വന്നോ, നികുതി ഒടുക്കിയോ, ശത്രുക്കളാലോ കള്ളന്മാരാലോ അപഹരിക്കപ്പെട്ടോ നഷ്ടമാകും
