दानं प्रियवाक्सहितं ज्ञानमगर्वं क्षमान्वितं शौर्यम्।
वित्तं त्यागनियुक्तं दुर्लभं एतत् चतुष्टयं लोके॥ हितोपदेशे
dānaṁ priyavāksahitaṁ jñānamagarvaṁ kṣamānvitaṁ śauryam|
vittaṁ tyāganiyuktaṁ durlabhaṁ etat catuṣṭayaṁ loke|| hitopadeshe
Indeed, these four things or combinations are very rare in this world
Gifts given or taken with endearing words
Knowledge and erudition without arrogance and haughtiness
Great physical valour along with patience too
Possession of wealth with eagerness to sacrifice
Our basis tendency is to keep all nice things for ourselves.. Pushed by social compulsions or through vanity and desire for praise, we might part with some of our possessions as gift that too reluctantly.. But to make a gift.. and making it with genuine happiness that arises in our hearts and flows through our words is indeed rare.
A man starts learning, and his arrogance starts growing side by side.. And what he reads or writes is the only good thing in the world, according to him.. and he looks at the world and others as if they are triflings.
We are not just men.. We are showmen.. And our best show is in impatience.. If we have some possession which we can showcase and impress others, we become possessive and exhibitive about it.. And we become impatient too.. If we are weak, we have to bear with the minor to major taunts of others.. But if we have physical strength to assault a fellow human being, then we become very impatient.
And of course, no one with some horse sense ever parts with his money unless something beneficial comes out of such expenditure.. Talking of charity and magnanimity is just lip service..
Of course, we can make earnest attempts at magnanimity an nobility.. Nothing is lost.
ദാനം പ്രിയവാക്സഹിതം ജ്ഞാനമഗര്‍വ്വം ക്ഷമാന്വിതം ശൌര്യം।
വിത്തം ത്യാഗനിയുക്തം ദുര്‍ലഭം ഏതത് ചതുഷ്ടയം ലോകേ॥

ലോകത്തില്‍ താഴെപ്പറയുന്ന നാല് കാര്യങ്ങള്‍ ഈ ലോകത്തില്‍ വളരെ വിരളമായി മാത്രം സംഭവിക്കുന്നു
നല്ല വാക്കുകള്‍ പറഞ്ഞുകൊണ്ട് ദാനം ചെയ്യുക
അറിവും കഴിവും പരകടിപ്പിക്കുമ്പോള്‍ അഹങ്കാരം കാണിക്കാതിരിക്കുക
മിടുക്കും ശക്തിയും പ്രകടിക്കുമ്പോള്‍ അത് ക്ഷമയോടും സഹിഷ്ണുതയോടും ചെയ്യുക
ത്യാഗബുദ്ധിയോടെ എല്ലാവര്‍ക്കും ഉപകാരമാകുവാന്‍ തക്കവണ്ണം സ്വന്തം സ്വത്തുക്കളെയും കരുതുക
