sacredness of the holy place of worship actually lies in the mind of the pilgrim

गंगादितीर्थेषु वसन्ति मत्स्याः

देवालये पक्षिगणाश्च नित्यम् ।

ते ज्ञानहीना न फलं लभन्ते

तीर्थानि देवायतनानि भावः ॥

gaṃgāditīrtheṣu vasanti matsyāḥ

devālaye pakṣigaṇāśca nityam ।

te jñānahīnā na phalaṃ labhante

tīrthāni devāyatanāni bhāvaḥ ॥

Fish and other marine creatures live in the waters of Ganga forever. Many birds fly around temple all through their lives. They occupy the river or the temple without any knowledge about the sacred nature of the premises they occupy. So they just live on without gaining any special merit that is attached to their location. This is because the sacredness of the holy place of worship actually lies in the mind of the pilgrim, and not on the physical location.

ഗംഗാദിതീര്‍ത്ഥേഷു വസന്തി മത്സ്യാഃ

ദേവാലയേ പക്ഷിഗണാശ്ച നിത്യം ।

തേ ജ്ഞാനഹീനാ ന ഫലം ലഭന്തേ

തീര്‍ത്ഥാനി ദേവായതനാനി ഭാവഃ ॥

മത്സ്യങ്ങളും മറ്റു ജലജീവികളും ഗംഗാനദിയില്‍ തിങ്ങിപ്പാര്‍ക്കുന്നു. ദേവാലയത്തിനുചുറ്റും ചില പറവകള്‍ അവയുടെ ജീവിതകാലം മുഴുവന്‍ പറന്നു നടക്കുന്നു. ഈ മീനുകള്‍ക്ക് ഗംഗയുടെ പാവനത അറിയില്ല. ഈ പക്ഷികള്‍ക്ക് ദേവാലയത്തിന്‍റെ മഹത്വത്തെക്കുറിച്ചും ഒരു ബോധവും ഇല്ല. അതുകൊണ്ടുതന്നെ അവയുടെ മഹത്വമേറിയ താമസസ്ഥലം കൊണ്ട് മാത്രം അവയ്ക്ക് ഒരു പ്രത്യേക പുണ്യവും കിട്ടുന്നില്ല. ഒരു ദേവാലയത്തിന്‍റെയോ തിര്‍ത്ഥസ്ഥലത്തിന്റെയോ മഹത്വം ആ സ്ഥലം എവിടെയാണ് എന്നതിലോ അവിടെ ആര് താമസിക്കുന്നു എന്നതിലോ അല്ല , നേരെമറിച്ച് അവിടം സന്ദര്‍ശിക്കുന്ന വ്യക്തികളുടെ ഭാവത്തില്‍ ആണ് നിലകൊള്ളുന്നത്
