The process of writing Ramayanm starts....3

continued from last post..

रामरामविवादं च गुणान्दाशरथेस्तथा।

तथाभिषेकं रामस्य कैकेय्या दुष्टभावतां॥१२

Rama and His brothers, along were returning with their brides to Ayodhya.. Sage Parashurama, the annihilator of Khatriyas, apprehended them on the way, and challenged Rama for a show of strenght.. There was a hot exchange of words between the two Ramas. However, Sri Rama effortlessly overcame the power of Parashurama , received the Bow of Vishnu from Him, and proceeded with the journey. Rama’s greatness was revealed in abundance.

In time Dasharatha hit upon the idea that Rama should be entrusted with the rule of the kingdom and so should be anointed as the Yuvarja.. There was jubiliation all over .

विघातं चभिषेकस्य रामस्य च विवासनम्।

राज्ञः शोकं विलापं च परलोकस्य चाश्रयम्॥१३

But an old hag Manthara poisoned the mind of Kaikeyi, the second wife of Dasharatha and Kaikeyi, banking on a promise made by the King managed to banish Rama for a sojourn in forests for fourteen years, and appointment of Bharatha as the heir apparent.

The promise already made bound the King down, and he had to accede to the demands of Kaikeyi, but he was stuck with impossible grief.

Rama, without show of any grief of dissent, proceeded to forest. Sita and Lakshmana accompanied him.

Dasharatha could not bear the pang of separation with his darling son Rama and left for heaven in utter grief.

प्रकृतीनां विषादं च प्रकृतीनाम् विसर्जनम्।

निषादाधिपसंवादं सूतोपावर्तनं तथा॥१४

The people of Ayodhya were reluctant to take leave of Rama and they grieved and accompanied Rama in a huge crowd as Sumantra the minister was conducting the two princes and Sita towards the banks of Ganga.. Rama Lakshmana and Sita took leave of Sumantra(the charioteer ) and the people as the reached the bankd of ganga. On the banks of Ganga, they met Guha the ruler of the hunter community.

गङ्गायाश्चापि सन्तारं भरद्वाजस्य दर्शनम्।

भरद्वाजाभ्यनुज्ञनाच्चित्रकूटस्य दर्शनम्॥१५

Guha conducts Rama, Sita and Lakshmana in a boat across Ganga. On the other bank of Ganga, they reach the hermitage of Sage Bharadwaja.. Bharadvaja advised them to settle down in Chitrakuta.

It may be noted that I am not giving meaning of each sloka.. but just trying to present the storyline of Ramayanam based on the incidents indicated in those slokas.. The detailed story unfolds itself in Ramayanam which spans over twentyfour thousand coupltets.. and that can never be covered by a layman like me.)
