पीतांबरं वीक्ष्य ददौ तनूजां दिगंबरं वीक्ष्य विषं समुद्रः

किं वाससैवं न विचारणीयं वासः प्रधानं खलु योग्यतायाः ।

पीतांबरं वीक्ष्य ददौ तनूजां दिगंबरं वीक्ष्य विषं समुद्रः ॥

kiṃ vāsasaivaṃ na vicāraṇīyaṃ vāsaḥ pradhānaṃ khalu yogyatāyāḥ ।pītāṃbaraṃ vīkṣya dadau tanūjāṃ digaṃbaraṃ vīkṣya viṣaṃ samudraḥ ॥

किं वाससा ? what is there in one’s dress? एवं thus न विचारणीयं one should not think योग्यतायाः in the matter of qualification and acceptability in society प्रधानं important वासः dress भवति happens समुद्रः the sea हरिं Vishnu पीताम्बरं dressed in yellow silk clothes वीक्ष्य having watched तनूजां ददौ gave his daughter (Lakshmi) परन्तु however दिगम्बरं clad in air, naked शिवं Siva वीक्ष्य having watched विषं दधौ gave poison (Kalakootam)

A person should not neglect his dress presuming that clothes mean nothing. Remember, during the churning of Milky ocean, the beautiful lady Lakshmi who emerged from the sea was given to Vishnu who dressed in yellow silk. When the poison Halahalam (Kalakootam) came, it was given to Shiva who was naked.

This subhashitam should be taken in the right spirit. The purpose is just to underline the importance of neat and flashy dress in creating first impression. This should not be taken as some allusion to Shiva being inferior to Vishnu in any way. The idea is just to have some fun, and it should be accepted in that spirit.

കിം വാസസൈവം ന വിചാരണീയംവാസഃ പ്രധാനം ഖലു യോഗ്യതായാഃ ।പീതാംബരം വീക്ഷ്യ ദദൌ തനൂജാം ദിഗംബരം വീക്ഷ്യ വിഷം സമുദ്രഃ ॥

മോടിയായും നാല് പേര്‍ ശ്രദ്ധിക്കുന്ന വിധത്തിലും വസ്ത്രങ്ങള്‍ ധരിക്കുന്നതില്‍ ആരും ഉപേക്ഷ കാണിക്കരുത്. വസ്ത്രം കൊണ്ട് എന്താണ് നേടാന്‍ എന്ന് വിചാരിക്കരുത്.. പാലാഴിയില്‍നിന്നു അമൃതം കടഞ്ഞെടുക്കുന്ന അവസരത്തില്‍ ഭംഗിയായി മഞ്ഞപ്പട്ട് ഉടുത്ത് വിഷ്ണു നില്‍ക്കുന്നുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. അതെ പരിസരത്ത് തന്നെ വസ്ത്രമൊന്നും ഉടുക്കാതെ ദിഗംബരനായി ശിവനും ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു. പാലാഴിയില്‍ നിന്ന് ആദ്യം സുന്ദരിയായ മഹാലക്ഷ്മി വന്നു. അവളെ അച്ഛനായ സമുദ്രം മഞ്ഞപ്പട്ടണിഞ്ഞു വിലസുന്ന വിഷ്ണുവിന് കെട്ടിക്കൊടുത്തു. പിന്നീട് അതെ പാല്‍ക്കടലില്‍ നിന്ന് കാളകൂടം എന്ന കൊടും വിഷവും പുറത്തു വന്നു. ആ വിഷം കൊടുത്ത് ഏല്‍പ്പിക്കാന്‍ ഒഴിവു കണ്ടത് നഗ്നനായി നില്‍ക്കുന്ന ശിവനെ ആയിരുന്നു.

ഇവിടെ നമുക്ക് പകിട്ടായി വസ്ത്രം ധരിക്കുന്നത് കൊണ്ടുള്ള നേട്ടങ്ങളെക്കുറിച്ചു ചിന്തിച്ചാല്‍ മതി. വിഷ്ണുവിന്‍റെയും ശിവന്‍റെയും കാര്യങ്ങള്‍ പറഞ്ഞത് ഹാസ്യത്തിന് വേണ്ടി മാത്രമാണ്.. അല്ലാതെ ആ ദേവന്മാരില്‍ ഒരാളെ തരംതാഴ്ത്തി കാണിക്കാന്‍ ഉദ്ദേശം ഒന്നും ഇല്ല.
