आरोप्यते शिला शैले

आरोप्यते शिला शैले यत्नेन महता यथा |

निपात्यते क्षणेनाधस्तथात्मा गुणदोषयोः ॥ १७५ ॥ हितोपदेशम्.

āropyate śilā śaile yatnena mahatā yathā ।

nipātyate kṣaṇenādhastathātmā guṇadoṣayoḥ ॥ 175 ॥ hitopadeśam।

It indeed with infinitely strenuous efforts that a person would push a huge piece of rock from the valley to the top of a mountain. But if the rock is just pushed slightly, it rolls down within split seconds. Same way, a man builds up his virtues with tremendous efforts. However, even though the slightest slip towards vices, all the name and fame built up by him just gets shattered

It is recorded in Malayalam Legends that one of the twelve great siddhas of Kerala, Narayanathu Branthan used to illustrate this point by carrying stones up the hill at Rayiranallur with great effort and then just pushing them down and clapping his hands while the stone rushed down.

यथा just like शिला a stone, a piece of rock महता with great यत्नेन effort शैले up a hill, up a mountain आरोप्यस्ते is pushed up, is dragged upwards क्षणेन in a very little moment अधस्तात् downward निपात्यते allowed to fall down च too तथा that way आत्मा the exalted soul, the great character गुणदोषयोः in virtue and vices आरोप्यते is lifted निपात्यते च and thrown down too.

ആരോപ്യതേ ശിലാ ശൈലേ യത്നേന മഹതാ യഥാ ।

നിപാത്യതേ ക്ഷണേനാധസ്തഥാത്മാ ഗുണദോഷയോഃ ॥ ൧൭൫ ॥ ഹിതോപദേശം।

വളരെയേറെ അധ്വാനിച്ചു മാത്രമേ ഒരാള്‍ക്ക് ഒരു കുന്നിന്‍റെയോ മലയുടെയോ മുകളിലേക്ക് ഒരു പാറക്കല്ല് ഉന്തിത്തള്ളി കയറ്റുവാന്‍ ആവുകയുള്ളൂ. പക്ഷെ മുകളില്‍ കയറ്റിയ കല്ല്‌ ചെറുതായൊന്നു താഴോട്ടു തള്ളിയാല്‍ പെട്ടെന്ന് അത് ഉരുണ്ടു വീഴും. അതുപോലെ ഒരു വ്യക്തി തന്‍റെ നന്മകളും സല്‍പേരും വളരെ ശ്രദ്ധിച്ചും പ്രയത്നിച്ചും നേടുകയും നിലനിര്‍ത്തുവാന്‍ പാടുപെടുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു. പക്ഷെ അയാള്‍ നന്മയുടെയും നേരിന്‍റെയും വഴിയില്‍ നിന്ന് വളരെ കുറച്ചു മാത്രം മാറിയാല്‍ പോലും അയാളുടെ ജീവിതം കൈവിട്ടു പോകും.. ചീത്തയുടെ ആഴങ്ങളിലേക്ക് അയാള്‍ പെട്ടെന്ന് വീണുപോകും.

മലയാളത്തിലെ ഐതിഹ്യങ്ങളില്‍ പന്ത്രണ്ടു സിദ്ധന്‍മാരില്‍ ഒരാളായ നാറാണത്തു ഭ്രാന്തന്‍ ഇക്കാര്യം എല്ലാവരെയും ബോധ്യപ്പെത്തുവാന്‍ വേണ്ടി രായിരനള്ളൂരിലെ കുന്നിനു മുകളിലേയ്ക്ക് പാറകള്‍ കഷ്ടപ്പെട്ട് വലിച്ചു കയറ്റിയ ശേഷം പെട്ടെന്ന് താഴേയ്ക്ക് തള്ളിയിട്ടു അവ വീഴുന്നത് കാണുമ്പോള്‍ കൈകൊട്ടി ചിരിക്കുമായിരുന്നുവത്രേ
