एक एव खगो मानी वने वसति चातकः। 

पिपासितो वा म्रियते याचते वा पुरन्दरम्।।

eka eva khago mAnI vane vasati chAtakaH|

 pipAsito vA mriyate yAchate vA purandaraM||

People with lots and lots of dignity and self respect  are found rarely.. 

Such people will not bend down and beg just  to survive..

The subhashitam quoted above reveals this fact

There is a unique bird Chataka living in the forest with great sense of dignity and self respect. 

Even when it is thirsty, it would drink water that comes in drops straight from clouds in the sky.. The bird would prefer to die of thirst rather than begging for water to anyone else other than the Lord of Clouds and thunder, Indra the Purandara himself..

It is better to give up life than going around begging with mean people, just for survival.

Note 

The bird Chataka is generically know as Jacobin Cuckoo.. Indian literary giants like Kalidasa and Bhartruhari have described the unique pride of the Chathaka bird in their poetry. According to Indian mythology Chataka bird has a beak atop its head and it thirsts for the rains.. And it would not drink water from any other source other than straight from the raincloud. 

ഏക ഏവ ഖഗോ മാനീ വനേ വസതി ചാതകഃ। പിപാസിതോ വാ മ്രിയതേ യാചതേ വാ പുരന്ദരം॥

ഒരിക്കലും പതറാത്ത ആത്മാഭിമാനവും അന്തസ്സും ഉള്ള വ്യക്തികളെ കണ്ടുകിട്ടാന്‍ പ്രയാസമാണ്.. അങ്ങിനെയുള്ള വ്യക്തികള്‍ ആരുടെയും മുന്നില്‍ തലകുനിക്കില്ല.. 

കാട്ടില്‍ സമാനസ്വഭാവക്കാരില്ലാത്ത ഒറ്റയാനെപ്പോലെ ചാതകപ്പക്ഷി ഏറെ ആത്മാഭിമാനത്തോടെ ജീവിക്കുന്നു. അവനു എത്ര ദാഹമെടുത്താലും ആകാശത്തില്‍ ഉരുണ്ടുകൂടുന്ന മേഘങ്ങള്‍ പൊഴിയുന്ന മഴത്തുള്ളികള്‍ മാത്രമേ അവന്‍ കുടിക്കുള്ളൂ. അങ്ങിനെയുള്ള ജലം കിട്ടിയില്ലെങ്കില്‍ അവന്‍ ദാഹം സഹിച്ചു ജീവന്‍ വെടിയും. ആകാശത്തേക്ക് കൊക്കും നീട്ടി മേഘങ്ങളുടെ ഉടയോനായ പുരണ്ടാരനായ് ഇന്ദ്രനോട് മാത്രം അവന്‍ വെള്ളത്തിനായി യാചിക്കുന്നു. മറ്റൊരാളുടെയും ഔദാര്യം അവനു വേണ്ട. 

യാചിക്കുന്നതു നിലയും വിലയും ഉള്ളവരോട് ആയിരിക്കണം.

വല്ലവന്‍റെയും കാല് പിടിച്ചു ജീവിതം നിലനിര്‍ത്താന്‍ അഭിമാനമുള്ളവന്‍ ആഗ്രഹിക്കില്ല. 

കുറിപ്പ്

ചാതകം എന്ന പക്ഷി ജന്തുശാസ്ത്രത്തില്‍ ജാകോബിയന്‍ കുക്കൂ എന്ന പേരിലി അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു. അതിന്റെ നിറുകയില്‍ ആകാശം നോക്കി നില്‍ക്കുന്നതുപോലുള്ള കൊക്ക് പോലുള്ള ഒരു ശരീരഭാഗം കാണാം.. 

ഭാരതത്തിലെ സാഹിത്യവിചക്ഷണരായ കാളിദാസനും ഭര്‍ത്രുഹരിയുമെല്ലാം ചാതകപ്പക്ഷിയുടെ ഈ പ്രത്യേകതയെ കുറിച്ച് തങ്ങളുടെ കൃതികളില്‍ പറഞ്ഞിട്ടുണ്ട്
