ब्रह्मघ्नेऽपि सुरापे च चोरे भग्नव्रते तथा
निष्कृतिर्विहिता लोके कृतघ्ने नास्ति निष्कृतिः॥
वाल्मीकिरामायने किष्किन्धाकाण्ड 34-12
brahmaghne'pi surāpe ca core bhagnavrate tathā
niṣkṛtirvihitā loke kṛtaghne nāsti niṣkṛtiḥ||
valmikiramayane Kishkindaa kaande 34-12
One can expiate or do amends and be free even
from sins
like tormenting and killing of learned persons,
consuming alcohol or intoxicating drinks,
theft and burglary,
breaking rules of vows and sacred practices..
But to the one who is ungrateful and one who does evil to the persons from whom he has derived benefits,
there is no expiation..
That sin is simply unpardonable..
(This does not mean that one is free to indulge in the sins like Brahmahatya...
it is only mentioned to underline the gravity of the sin of thanklessness or ingratitude)

ഒരാള്‍ക്ക്‌ ബ്രഹ്മഹത്യ, മദ്യപാനം, കൊള്ളയും പിടിച്ചുപറിയും, വ്രതങ്ങളും പ്രതിജ്ഞകളും തെറ്റിക്കുക എന്നീ പാപങ്ങള്‍ ചെയ്തുപോയാല്‍ പോലും എന്തെങ്കിലും പ്രായശ്ചിത്തങ്ങളും മറ്റും ചെയ്തു കുറ്റവിമുക്തി നേടാന്‍ കഴിഞ്ഞു എന്ന് വരാം
പക്ഷെ ആരെങ്കിലും ചെയ്ത ഉപകാരം മറന്നു നന്ദികേടു കാണിച്ചാല്‍ ആ പാപത്തിനു ഒരു പ്രതിവിധിയും ഇല്ല.

ഈ ശ്ലോകം ബ്രഹ്മഹത്യ മുതലായ കൊടുംപാപങ്ങള്‍ ചെയ്യുവാനുള്ള അനുവാദമായി ആരും വ്യാഖ്യാനിക്കരുത്. നന്ദികേട് മേല്‍പ്പറഞ്ഞ പാപങ്ങളെക്കാലും ഗുരുതരവും അക്ഷന്തവ്യവും ആണെന്ന് അടിവരയിട്ട് കാണിക്കുന്നതാണ് ഈ ശ്ലോകത്തിന്റെ ഉദ്ദേശം.
