माणिक्यवीणामुपलाळयन्तीं
मदालसां मञ्जुळ वाग्विलासां।
माहेन्द्रनीलद्युतिकोमळाङ्गीं
मातङ्गकन्यां मनसा स्मरामि॥
māṇikyavīṇāmupalāḻayantīṁ
madālasāṁ mañjuḻa vāgvilāsāṁ|
māhendranīladyutikomaḻāṅgīṁ
mātaṅgakanyāṁ manasā smarāmi||
Shyamala Dandakam Kalidasa.
I prostrate before Shyaamala and pay respects with my whole heart and mind, the daughter of Maatanga....She nestles on her bosom a veena made of maanikya gem, she is supremely happy and relaxed , her words are very sweet and she is resplendent in the brighntess of indraneela (peacock blue).
She is called Shyaamala, because she it utterly dark in complexion.. Of course, Kalidasa surely has tried to effect a fusion of the aspect of vagdevata and Kaali too.. as the legend has it that the poet was granted the elixir of knowledge by mother Kali Herself. We see this mother keeping a lute or veena in her hands.. and nestling it to her bosom as if it were her own darling child… She is the source of all words, and the magic created by words and music.. She is called madaalasa or inebriated.. is it that she has taken some drinks? Not necessarily.. The words and music created by Her makes the entire universe inebriated to madness.. So when she is the origin of that, she must be naturally lazy with inebriation.. And she is producing words and speeches which are sweet.. yes, she is the Vag devata..
She is shining for with the lustre of dark peacock green tint.. maybe her natural colour is that.. or the gems worn by her work with her dark body colour and gives this effect.. and she is of very tender and delicate body..
She is the daughter of Matanga.. Sage Matanga, some say.. Maatanga Kanya can also mean that a hunter womam.. There is a story that mother Gauri once disguised as a hunter woman and accompanied lord Shiva.. And Maatangi is also one of the ten maha vidyas.. revered in Shathi upasana.

കാളിദാസന്റെ ശ്യാമളാ ദണ്ഡകം
മാണിക്യക്കല്ലുകൊണ്ട് തീര്‍ത്ത മണിവീണ മാറില്‍ അടക്കിപ്പിടിച്ചു കൊണ്ട്,
താന്‍ തന്നെ സ്വയം സൃഷ്ടിച്ചെടുത്ത മധുരമായ വാക്കുകളുടെയും അനശ്വര സംഗീതത്തിന്റെയും ലഹരിയില്‍ മയങ്ങിയിരിക്കുന്ന
മധുരമധുരങ്ങളായ വാക്കുകൾ കൊഴിഞ്ഞ് നമ്മുടെ മനം മയക്കുന്നവളായ
ഇന്ദ്രനീലത്തിൻറെ നിറം പൂണ്ട അഴകേറിയ മേനിയുടയവളായ
ആ കാട്ടാളത്തി പെണ്‍കൊടിയെ,
മതംഗമുനിയുടെ ഓമന മകളെ
മനം നിറയെ നിനച്ചു നിനച്ചു ആനന്ദിക്കട്ടെ..
കാളിദാസന്‍ കാളിയേയും വാഗ്ദേവിയെയും ശക്തിയേയും എല്ലാം ആ അമ്മയില്‍ കാണുന്നു..
അവള്‍ കറുത്തവളായ കാളി ആണ് ശ്യാമള ആണ്.
വീണയെ സ്വന്തം മാറില്‍ കുഞ്ഞിനേയെന്ന പോലെ അടക്കിപ്പിടിച്ചു താലോലിക്കുന്ന സംഗീതത്തിന്റെയും അക്ഷരങ്ങളുടെയും അധിദേവതയാണ്.
അതേ സമയം കാട്ടാളത്തിയായി വേഷം കെട്ടി വേടനായി തിരിഞ്ഞുനടന്ന ശിവന്റെ ഒപ്പം കൂട്ടിന്നു കൂടിയ പര്‍വതകന്യകയുമാണ്..
താന്‍ സൃഷ്ടിച്ച വാക്കുകളുടെയും മധുരസ്വരങ്ങളുടെയും ലഹരിയില്‍ സ്വയം മറന്നു മദാലസയായി വിലസുന്നവള്‍
