पृथिव्यां त्रीणि रत्नानि जलं अन्नं सुभाषितम् ।
मूढै: पाषाणखण्डेषु रत्नसंज्ञा प्रदीयते ॥
pṛthivyāṃ trīṇi ratnāni jalaṃ annaṃ subhāṣitam ।
mūḍhai: pāṣāṇakhaṇḍeṣu ratnasaṃjñā pradīyate ॥
The three real and most worthy gems found on the face of the earth
are
1 Water 2. Food 3. The words of the wise people
However, the ignorant people have managed to give the name gem to some pieces of stone
Gems are usually mined from earth and they are mostly pieces of stones .. which are given great value for their luster and beauty..
However if we have to consider giving the name "gem" to materials which have real value, the materials are surely water, food and the wisdom of great people.. Therefore the poet exclaims that the name of Gem has been wrongly assigned by foolish people to some pieces of stone.
പൃഥിവ്യാം ത്രീണി രത്നാനി ജലം അന്നം സുഭാഷിതം ।
മൂഢൈ: പാഷാണഖണ്ഡേഷു രത്നസംജ്ഞാ പ്രദീയതേ ॥
ഭൂമിയില്‍ കാണുന്ന മൂന്നു യഥാര്‍ത്ഥ രത്നങ്ങള്‍ ജലം, ആഹാരം, പിന്നെ മഹാന്മാരുടെ സുഭാഷിടങ്ങള്‍ എന്നിവയാണ്. പക്ഷെ വിവരമില്ലാത്തവര്‍ കല്ലിന്റെ കഷണങ്ങളെ രത്നങ്ങള്‍ എന്ന് വിലിക്കൂന്നു.
യഥാര്‍ത്ഥത്തില്‍ വില മതിക്കാന്‍ നമുക്ക് കഴിയാത്ത വസ്തുക്കളെ ആണ് നാം രത്നങ്ങള്‍ എന്ന് വിളിക്കേണ്ടത്. അപ്പോള്‍ ജലവും അന്നവും സുഭാഷിതവും തന്നെയാണ് ആ പേരിനു അര്‍ഹര്‍. പക്ഷെ ഭൂമിയില്‍ നിന്ന് കുഴിച്ചെടുക്കുന്ന തിളങ്ങുന്ന കല്ലിന്‍ കഷണങ്ങളെ നാം രത്നമെന്നു വിളിക്കുന്നു. അതു വിഡ്ഢിത്തമല്ലേ എന്ന് കവി ചോദിക്കുന്നു..
